Just curious about whether there are any dinkum Aussie photoperiod weed varieties developed by growers here for our great outdoors. Seed catalogues are jammed with ‘foreign’ hybrids pitching claims about yields, terpene profiles, potency and turn-around times, so it would seem we are spoiled with options. I have seen some Aussie-inspired names out there though I have no idea about their pedigrees or performance. Classic landrace varieties are still there (eg. Durban Poison, Thai, Acapulco Gold etc.) though questions keep popping up about their authenticity, potency, often long time in-ground (especially for sativas) and the issue of terroir. Seems most producers can’t be arsed putting in the groundwork to create something uniquely Australian, though I’d love to hear otherwise. Decades ago I sowed pure Thai that was super-spacey, grew like a triffid but flowered when it was good and ready – often in autumn /early winter. I toyed with polyploidy that proved 99% fatal to treated seeds but ended up with one monster female that produced an enormous first harvest, over-wintered and re-shot for a second albeit reduced yield. I found a dozen or so perfectly formed seeds that popped and thrived in the heat but still took 10+ months to mature. Long time to be looking over one’s shoulder. In the interim I’ve grown a few hybrids (Bruce Banner, Stardawg, Forbidden Runtz, Gorilla Glue) outdoors with mixed results re. living up to the hype, and have decided to start out afresh with Durban Poison and Sinai and see where they lead me. Anyone else out there having fun experimenting or growing out stable varieties they bred themselves?
