I have asthma and only use OTC medication for it. Up until recently I relied on Epinephrine inhalers. I generally only have a few weeks out of a year where my asthma requires any treatment, and though I used it a bit more than recommended, it never gave me problems during the weeks I needed to use it.
Unfortunately thanks to the FDA, the inhalers are now banned due to environmental concerns. I'm now left with only the ability to use a tablet based medication which contains 12.5mg of Ephedrine and 200mg of Guaifenesin.
I'd normally ask if there was some way to remove the Guaifenesin some how, but due to the fact Ephedrine is a known precursor in synthesis of something else, I don't think I'll be able to get help in that endeavor.
So, my other choice is to ask if there are any medications/vitamins/foods/etc, that might inhibit the effects of Guaifenesin.
Ephedrine has no "do not exceed X amount per day" warning.
Guaifenesin has a "do not exceed 2.4g per day" warning, and each pill has 200mg of it. The recommended dosage is 1 to 2 pills every 4 hours. I'm generally needing about 3 to 4, which if taken in a 24 hour period would put me at 3.6 to 4.8 grams of Guaifenesin a day.
I've been using Adderall in place of these Ephedrine pills due to concern of issues with Guaifenesin, but those are more expensive and not as reliably available.
Any suggestions for my problem?
Or would it generally be safe for someone at 230lbs to consume up to 4.8 grams of Guaifenesin a day?
Really enjoy breathing, but ODing on some "expectorant" pharmaceutical companies decided to put into my pills is not something I enjoy either.
On a related note, I noticed in research that Vicks Vapor Inhalers use the SNS stimulant version of Methamphetamine, and I'm under the impression that it's the SNS stimulant effects that cause bronchodialation, would those inhalers work just as well for my asthma?
