I was discussing this with a co worker recently. She was sent to work in Alabama for 6 weeks as our employer needed her to help out at our new offices. The stories she has told me seem unbelievable to me, but maybe I am clueless. I know the Confederacy had their asses whooped, the burning of Atlanata, reconstruction, ect... But does this prejiduce carry over into the twenty first century? Interested to hear anybodies opinion on this subject.

I was born and raised in the south. I personally do not have a problem with people from the north, but a great deal of southerners actually do.

Yeah when I moved to North Carolina from the Midwest I was shocked to find out that a good deal of southerners still actually give a fuck about such stupid and insignificant shit. However, southerners are pretty friendly and easy to get along with once you get used to the culture, it's just...different.

Yep... Moved from PA to NC and they do. They still drink moonshine too. Not being sarcastic.

I am a transplant from Ohio to here in South Alabama, and I have never encountered any hostility because of being a northerner. I have taken some good-natured ribbing, and have been told I have a "cute accent", but have never been subjected to any hatred. This is just my personal experience, and I don't disbelieve others who have different stories.

That said, I just wonder if some Yankees bring it upon themselves with a snarky, demeaning, superior attitude towards southern people and southern culture. People can sense when they are being belittled or looked down upon, and I think a lot of people from the north have a prejudice about southern folks. I agree with the poster above who states that southern culture takes some getting used to, but I for one have come to appreciate so much about it. And, I will defend my Alabama friends against anyone who tries to define them as ignorant, "redneck", backwards, or any of the other nasty things I have heard people up north say.

Respect is a two-way street.

Im in NC and yea yankee is pretty much an insult. However i live in the research triangle park so there aren't alot of old school southerners here. But yea moonshine is still definatly here but a lot of the hick's are moving on to growing the herb.

I'm from the North and never ran into anything serious from the South. However been called a "Yank" is like it has been said, an insult. 2009 get over it already. I ex was from the South and would call me his "lil Yankee girl", in the case it can be turned into something endearing rather than insulting is better....

from texas

im from, and currently live in east texas(heart of south...very very very south), probably one of the most prejudice places on earth...as far as southerner's hostility toward "yankees:" hah. "yankees" are actually very welcome aound the entire east texas community for sure. i've lived in every corner of texas, i rarely hear anyone use the term yankee in a derogatory way, honestly...much less be hostile around my little east texas town. the only prejudice people around here are white pride/white power, kkk, etc. its sickening, only thing i can do is tune it out...these kind are becoming an epidemic around here. some white pride nazi type aound my area started leaving newsletters with my grandma's mail. letter saying "National Socialist Movement. [with all this filth fascist disgusting nazi propaganda.
anyways, this newsletter had swastikas all over it, my grandfather served against Germany's terrible nazi SS. and this letter had "SS" and "NSM88," all over it. my grandmother freaked out, shes very jewish. and has terrible anxiety, she called me and, told me all what it said and i told her i wanted the letter. i got ahold of it and me and 30-50 of my really good anti-racist action (ARA) friends from all over texas planned to attend their tyler, tx nazi socialist skinhead rally. they showed up with maybe 8-12 skinheads. all decked out in their swastika SS uniforms. maybe 75 came out of protest and shut down the rally. couldnr hear a word COMANDER GEOFF said. we were so loud. yes, the south can be very prejudice for african americans, and mexican americans, etc, etc, native americans...but not all of the south. and everyone i know, or have ever met in the south has never had any outstanding problems with people from the north. personally
sorry, super high on many thingslllhard to write....
oh yeah, anyone in texas, hit me up.

yeah i used to go to school out in tyler, everyone out there was real kind, but i live in dallas now. everyone i know has common courtesy toward anyone from the north, and i sure as hell don't have a problem with ya. we don't like the image that we are all cowboys though lol.

people in my area tend to dislike black and mexican hood rat types, other than that everyone seems to be real friendly to everyone

What do people in the South think about Californians? Would yankee haters consider us yankees or "fuckin hippies". How about Alaskans or Hawaiians? Arizona? That was actually part of the Confederacy- what do southerners think of zonies?

i grew up in new england and moved to miami/ft. liquordale/palm beach when i was 18. that part of south florida isn't "southern" at all. i only met 2 or 3 people who were actually born and raised there while i lived down there.
i moved to north florida and it is a totally different story. most everyone i know here was born and raised in this area. there is a very small county nearby that is as racist and redneck as it gets. i've def been called "yankee" and "cracker" since moving here but i just come right back at 'em with an appropriate burn. it is def the bible belt here and a lot of the older women want to "witness" to you, tell you how you'll burn in hell if you don't go to church wednesday nights and sundays.
luckily UF is nearby so there's a really diverse population in g-ville.
imho, tolerance is way more important than labeling people and making assumptions based on where they're from.

And This
We like everyone until you do something that makes us not like you

A lot of the back and forth boils down to heritage and tradition. Most Southerners (including myself) are VERY proud of where they are from, the way they were raised and the traditions they hold dear. I have friends from the north and from what I have whitnessed they are the same way. I use the term "Yankee" but it is always light hearted humor and is understood. I don't just go hollering out the window "God Damned Yankee!" at any car with a license plate from north of the Mason Dixon.

i actually had a dude visiting from cali in my liquor store a couple weeks ago and besides his attitude about wondering oh where am i at. come on dude you fucking drove to this store have some sort of clue where you are. other than his lack of direction where to get quality buds and being from cali meant he could only smoke primo buds in his words were the only 2 things i found odd about the guy.

as far as northerners go some do seem to carry the we are so much sophisticated and refined attitude just cause they are where they are from.

as far as shine is concerned you can never take that away from generations of families distilling it

personally i think people from the south talk funny..funny accents

ny/nj accents are the most annoying to me too...southern accents are just funny
