Are comics an art form or just childish crap?

A comic geek and still going strong. Some of the all time favorites are Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, the Watchmen, Kingdom Come, and the Sandman.
A great book for those of us that don't believe comics are an art form should check out:
Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud/ HarperCollins Press

I do think comics have value as a form of art, a value that is underestimated by a lot of ppl.
I don't have time right now to get into this, but check out the book "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud.

well i am an art student and i have4 taken comics book and modern art a study of an underrepresented art form. what im saying is my college thinks its an art form. so it must be!!!!!!! anywho i regularly draw comic books and a few have even been published on independent labels.

I prefer the wordless 'graphic novel' structure and format of Eric Drooker's 'Flood'. Very intuitive and symbolic.
I HIGHLY recommend 'Understanding Comics' for anyone seriously interested in graphic design and / or storytelling.
And as many people know, most movie scenes are predicated on the sequences that begin as comics in storyboard format. I do not find that to be 'childish crap'.

i grew up on comics. i loved to read them while growing up. the DC universe was awesome
but... though i don't think they are childish... i cannot read them anymore. they are ADDICTIVE. worse then any drug ive ever done. ive spent so much money on different subscriptions, back issues, and collectors editions. i have 25+ issues of superman in the white polybag. the one where h decides to come back to life and 4 other supermen appear.
i have box's and box's of them in my parents house. but i have to leave them be.
ask Ms.ReD... one time... years after when i bought them... i tried to organize them so i could put them away in storage. i spent weeks on the floor of my living room re-reading them all. i always needed JUST ONE MORE.
comics scare me :( and i love them....

i recommend reading Raymond Briggs - "When The Wind Blows"
It's in a comic book form about nuclear war. extremely effective and powerful!

maybe a little off topic but have any of you read Elfquest? Easily my favorite comic/graphic novel series. And yes I think they're an art form and yes I think they're as worthy as other more reputable types of literature.
