I've read comics for many years, learning a few things about art and drawing from them...
but can you consider them actual reading material? An artform of some sort? Adults should / shouldn't be reading them?
I just enjoy them, others think Im immature for doing so.... but I honestly find theme quite indepth (the more 'adult' orientated ones ie: predator, tales of the dark night etc etc)
Not like ruski and bunny, which we've made a very child like comic strip blend with and make fun of serious stuff, but more adult minded comics?
Is it all just for kids?

No, adults should not read cartoons. This kind of practice should be banned and offenders should be punnished by watching teletubies for the rest of their lifes.
Thank You

what the hell, what kindof fascist are you? shouldnt ones reading material be decided upon by the Reader?
whats wrong with cartoons?(here & there)
i love comics & cartoons, to answer the Threads subject, i think they are a form of art with a story line. All of the artist's who draw cartoons are badass pencil pushers.. you cannot deny that.
blufluffybunny, yes predator kicks ass, and i have every aliens comic ever :D
here&there, can you honestly tell me that you dont like any anime?

ofcourse i was kiding!!!! blufluffybunny said "Adults should / shouldn't be reading them?" and I thought that was funny/she was kidding... funny answer to a funny quaestion (or, the funny part of a serious question) well, I thought it was funny anyway.. I have a bad reputation man..
other than that, I love cartoons and animations..., infact, I designed a book on animation which was my fav. project
if they are art or not.... you'd perefer if I don't talk about whats art whats not, right? depends on this, that, love and cash...
and, Manga rules..

This whole 'what is art' thing is freaking me out a bit.
- A Van Gogh painting is art.
- Tekken 4 is art.
- A Mr Scruff album is art.
- Two airplanes hitting the WTC Twin Towers is art (link!)
- Someone standing in a blue room getting buckets of trout poured over them is art.
- The World According to Garp is art.
- Bubblegum Crisis is art.
It's not that I think any of the above isn't art, its that I think the whole question is defunct in this day and age. Art is so subjective now 'is **** art?' is irrelevant. If you think it is - it is. IMHO anyway :)
Anywhoos, racing back to topic at the speed of my shitty typing - fuck yeah comics are art. Adults should be reading them, no stupid "they're for kids" attitudes.
A well written and illustrated comic is as good a read as any novel. I'm not particularly up to date with what is going on with comics but things I've read like Watchmen, Sandman, Akira, Sin City, Ronin, Dark Knight Returns; not to mention a comic like Preacher (should be essential reading for everyone!) - these are pieces of literature every bit as valid as a book by Orwell or Dickens or Irving.

I too have Aliens: Genocide, Earth War etc etc. Along with Predator, Terminator, Spawn....
I have decided to start collecting the new series of Transformers... more childish than the other titles, but the storylines are VERY much directed at adults.........

Now of course every Adult should read comics. Its a welcome change from times-new-roman font shit at the office, and indulges in allot of fantasy combined with reality scenerios.
Stimulates the mind i tell you!
I dedicated much of my youth to collecting Marvel and some DC comics..
I extracted most of my manners from Conan. ;) I'm a little more refined now.

BTW, Ruski and Bunny

I hadn't looked at in a while and there's about 7 strips I hadn't read :)
It's one of the few things that make me *really* laugh out loud on the net - respect!

I'm not really a big comic fan, so as a whole, I think comics generally suck. Usually, nothing more than ultra-big breasted girls fighting steroid pumped enemies and everyone has some deep dark issue that is far beyond cliche, to make a long story short, the majortiy of comics pretty much suck...
Then I cam across a little book called Johnny the Homicidal Maniac...
This comic is nothing less than a schizophrenic descent into madness, that stands on it's own as a work of true art, in my opinion. I was absolutley absorbed into each issue, everytime impressed by something in it, the art, the fascinatingly witty dialouge, the tons of hidden messages etc etc.
Too bad they only made 8 issues...
Brainrape
PS- Btw, the guy who wrote the comic is the guy responsible for the Invader Zim cartoon, which was fucking hilarious as well...

Oh and just for my own curiosity, does everyone enjoy ruskiandbunny.com?
I just like to know we're providing some laughs.
That makes all the effort worth while......
:)

I read comics for many years, then started reading novels in my late teens. After getting a lot more bang for my buck with the paperbacks, I quit comics cold turkey and read only novels.
In my opinion, comics are great... for people with short attention spans or that don't have time to read a book. Comics don't last long enough, and cost way too much money these days. I still go to comic shops from time to time... and I see the prices on them. Holy shit... I remember when comics were 50 cents. Yeah, I'm an old fuck.
Another thing is... if you stop reading comics for years and then pick some up, the storylines and characters have changed so much they are really hard to understand. Plus, there are so many alternate-universe style comics going on now (this seems to be the trend), you can't tell what's supposed to be mainline comic stories and what's alt-verse.

I think you all have the right to like comics if you like comics.
But personally, i consider them a childish thing. I was a kid, who watched cartoons ALL THE TIME, and watched cartoons till i was like 11-12 like constantly, then one day my mum said something like "are u ALWAYS going to watch cartoons?" and i think from then on i became a realist.
Relating to the question: Yes, i do believe they are an art form. They are a very important thing for a childs/humans development, they teach morals, good from bad ladida. Subliminaly. As does many other art forms.
Its not just for kids, however i choose not to read them :)
