I am prescribed trazodone as a sleep aid and I love the stuff. I love that feeling of being shot with an elephant tranquiliser at bed time and I feel great for the whole day after. I feel kinda lethargic the next morning but by around 3PM I start feeling energetic, and I'm bursting with energy by around 7PM. I feel euphoric for the whole day after taking trazodone the previous night. I took 100mg last night after a long break (hadn't taken any in weeks) and I've been really happy/euphoric all day. Anyone else here like trazodone? Is this an indication of depression? In other words, do I only like it because its alleviating some depression symptoms? I don't think so because like SSRIs, trazodone is supposed to take a few weeks to start working for depression. When I have this drug in my system, I feel emotions in a different way, and see the world differently. For example, I started reading HP Lovecrafts stories after I started taking trazodone. Usually I never read fiction. I find that I can get right into it and start feeling emotions when I think about the scenes described in the book. Usually I'm emotionally numb.

The biggest problems are the brain fog and morning drowsiness, but other than that trazodone is great IMO, and I'm surprised people don't use it as a next day mood enhancer. A similar drug that I want to try is mirtazapine. It has a less selective binding profile, so I'd say its even more sedating.

I take 50mg Trazodone daily, for sleep. It works absolute wonders for my insomnia. The first two times I took it, I could hardly walk, lol, it had a very heavy tranquilising effect - but without any euphoria. I don't experience any recognisible sedation effects anymore, but it still works great for keeping me asleep at night. It took me about a week to shake off the initial side effects (lethargy and headache) then it was fine.

I must say - it has had a mild anti-anxiety effect in general - I would probably need to take a lot more to enjoy its full benefits, but I've been told that it can make you very groggy at higher doses.

It's been a life-saver for me, but it has no recreational value, unless combined with 1mg etiz in the evening :)

Glad you've found some contentment from it :)

Note: I forgot to mention that if I forget to take this for just one day, I feel terrible. Interestingly, I've never taken LSD whilst on Trazodone...interested to know whether there are any problems/benefits, seeing as they both affect the 5-HT2A receptor, but in opposite ways.

Yeah its the best hypnotic I have ever tried. The reason I like it so much is its next day effects though. The highest dose I have tried is 150mg and I didn't find it to be much different to 50mg. I tried combining it with etizolam once too and I slept for 15 hours. I find its good for amphetamine comedowns too.

Trazodone knocked me out the first couple days i was on it, then after that it started feeling like a needle of crack before bed so i just threw it away.

I really like the stuff too. Been taking 250 mgs for sleep for 3-4 years now. As of late been smoking in place of taking it and only sporadically taking it as it makes getting up for work the next day rather difficult but it is manageable. I too notice a distinct level of positivity and simple emotional well being when I take it. The only downside is it's a bitch to come off of unless you got some pot. The depression that ensued during previous attempts at cold turkeying it or short tapers was pretty bad it was so bad I started questioning my love for others (those of whom I love dearly!) just crazy thoughts and down trodden mood. Keep that in mind before remaining on it to to long or I hope you like smoke pot.

Trazadone quits working for me after a couple of days and leaves me feeling weird in the morning, like stiff *remind of opiate WDs*. I'd much rather have Remeron/mirtazapine, one of the best hypnotic AD's I've had. Improved my appetites majorly.

Right now my drowsiness/lethargy is gone which is amazing. I had a problem with drowsiness and lack of motivation before I started taking amphetamines, now after quitting amphetamines the problem is worse than ever. Today its gone. I wish there was a way I could make this permanent. I know from experience that these next day effects wear off after being on trazodone for a while. It also stopped putting me to sleep after a couple of weeks and instead, started stimulating me. When I take a break from it, it starts working again though.

it gives me terrible nightmares.
I read that was a common side effect. I don't get that at all. Gives me good dreams if anything. I get nightmares on opioids.

Does it have extra side effects? Trazodone induces a ravenous appetite in me too. Good for amphetamine comedowns.

Took trazadone once. I was out like a light for many hours. Didn't pay attention to how I felt the next day. Perhaps a second try is in order.

It helped me for less than a week when i was taking it for sleep at 100mg, but gave me REALLY bad post-awakening sedation. I've taken every type of sleep aid out there and ironically found it to impair my ability to function in the morning way more than a double-dose of ambien cr 12.5mg ever did. Benadryl gives me a pretty similar effect to trazodone but typically seems to wear off sooner for me

Dont waste your time...It really shouldn't be used for (short term) anxiety, sleep disorders etc...
Most patients that use it for ongoing mood disorders (reason it was originally prescribed) usually end up disliking it because of all the horrid side-effects that seem to pile on from long time use.

I wish I could use cannabis, it gives me psychosis but I know from experience that it cures pain and all kinds of other symptoms. Have you tried gabapentin? Its an effective good mood enhancer IME. Kratom is good for that too.

Another great thing about Trazodone: I take escitalopram, which kills sex drive, so I take maca root to alleviate the sexual dysfunction, but maca root also greatly stimulates. Trazodone kills that stimulation around bed time, which is what I needed.

I don't know...I think nowadays the main reason it's prescribed is as on off-label sleep aid in individuals that doctors don't want to RX a z-drug or benzo for sleep. I've never met anybody on a tricyclic antidepressant for what its actual indication was with the number of generic SSRI's and SNRI's on the market currently. It's not really that different from the use of seroquel for sleep onset - dosages are typically much lower than what would be considered a "therapeutic dose" for whatever indications they've been FDA approved for, thus preventing the side effects from being quite as bad as what one could experience if prescribed a higher dosage of the same medication for its indicated purpose.

I was prescribed it when I first got an SSRI (pre-bipolar psychosis diagnosis) and had trouble sleeping

Me and my insomniatic homie both agreed, best sleep we ever got.
I don't recall any negative effects. Most drugs I take make me feel crappy the first hour of waking so it couldn't have been that bad.

What is trazodone actually classified as?

it gives me vertigo at nite, or right b4 i fall asleep i have panic attacks, sadly trazadone worked great for me for years, now all of a sudden i cant take it

Your fun experiences have to do with its main metabolite being essentially a psychedelic, and trazodone increasing b-endorphin concentrations at least after chronic treatment.

Just got my script switched to mirtazapine. Took 15mg last night and slept for 14 hours. Good thing I didn't have to be up for anything. My mood is gradually improving as time goes by, similar to what trazodone did. I'm thinking this might be due to a serotonin rebound. Trazodone and mirtazapine block serotonin receptors, so maybe the brain starts releasing more serotonin in response to that, then when the drug wears off, you're left with a surplus of synaptic serotonin.
