Misc Anxiety

well, sometimes people want to stop taking meds, and do it natural...and try to deal with it, Benzos have a withdraw when you try to quit, as well as gabapentin, but it is not as serious as benzo withdraws, you will either take them for your whole life, or stop sometime...

I was prescribed benzo's at a young age and I'm sure If you really pushed for it, you could get yourself a script for Valium/xanax/clonazepam. I agree with those on here that recomend cognitive behavioral therapy. I've mentioned before on this site that I had very serious OCD when I was younger, and what got me out of it (or at least for a good while-the severity never came back) was a combination of SSRI's (Zoloft-generic is called Sertraline) as well as an awsome CBT doctor. At the time I of course attributed my recovery only to the Zoloft but looking back, after years more of anti-depressants which didn't work for other very real diagnosis, I'm more skeptical of SSRI's, and place more value on Cognitive behavioral Therapy.

It's not a quick fix, but the ones that stick generally aren't. I would give it a try first, but if the anxiety is really unbarable a good medication that is not nearly as addictive as benzo's would be gabapentin. It's actually intended for neurological pain but it's prescribed offten off label for anxiety and mood disorders.

Once again we aren't doctors, so I would really recomend trying to find a good psychologist first and have them asses your symptoms. If they think you need medical treatment they can refer you to a psychiatrist.

Thank you for the insight, I am going to have to wait to see how things play out with this neurologist.

Dude,
If you want some more information on my experience with CBT feel free to PM me. Anxiety SUCKS!, I know cause I got it. I made the big mistake of self medicating with heroin and benzo's and that's a road that leads nowhere. Benzo's can seriously fuck with your head, not to mention the withdrawal can be fatal. And I don't need to warn you about the dangers of using opiates to cope with anxiety.

^^it does seem that some people are able to take small doses of benzos for years and have it still treat their anxiety effectively...how they are able to without letting tolerance creep in im not sure...i personally know 2 people that have been taking k-pins for 7-8 years with only mild tolerance rises..

I'm one of these people with Valium (Diazepam). While the side effects (high, in some people's opinions) have went away, the medication still continues to relieve my anxiety.

I think it's part brain chemistry, and a big part taking as directed and only when needed.

Well they say alprazolam (and I'm sure other benzos, I'm just using this as an example) retains it's power of anxiolysis forever.

Regardless of whether it works forever, it doesn't change that it's often an inappropriate, or not as healthy form of treating your anxiety disorder in the long-term.

It didn't help that the one therapist I went to caused drama between my family and I by blaming my problems on them, when I feel firmly it wasn't the case. Eventually I just refused to go back. My problems, are either genetic, or of the creation of my own mind.

I just hated the assumption on his part that it must be someones fault, when that isn't necessarily the case at all.

We also went through 'thought field therapy' which basically amounted to self hypnosis. This also didn't help even though I gave it an honest chance.

Oh, I've not given up on doing that, no one should. I'm a lot better now than I was a few years ago, and feel like self improvement is slowly coming along through my own self contemplation.

That being said, if I could find a good therapist, that would be awesome and I would not be at all opposed. There are just very few options being that I live in a small town.

Maybe I should look at surrounding bigger cities if my insurance will cover it. They are weird about out of area stuff.

-Easy way to put it, Benzo's do work well for almost any type of anxiety. BUT I don't even think they are worth taking, because your doctor will stop giving them to you at some point later down the road, an the detox of Benzo's is hell, NOT FUN AT ALL.. They mess your brain up psychologically and you go through terrible withdrawals.

-SSRI's just don't seem to work for me AT ALL and have a ton of side effects. Most people I know agree with that.

-The best thing I can tell you is to go to a health store and get "VITAMIN B Complex" that specific one has all of the "B" vitamins in it. That will calm you down alot, take like double the dose that the bottle tells you to take.

- One last thing, Ive heard from some people that there's a herb at most health stores that works really well.. Its called passion flower.. Look that up if you want to know more about it.

I already do take that. I took it since like 5 years back , because my mom didn't want me on ADHD meds.
