Misc Anxiety

Are you on any medication for ADD? If you are it could be causing worse anxiety. Adderall, Ritalin, Focalin are all stimulants and will make you anxious/sped up feeling.

Zoloft, Cymbalta, Lexapro and Paxil are all good SSRI's for anxiety.

Oh another thing. Most psychiatrists will not give a teen or young adult benzodiazapines. Unless you are hospitalized for mental health issues or completely non functional die to anxiety it is very unlikely that you would be put on Xanax or Attivan.

I don't take ADD meds. I just need some sort of relief at this point , I feel coiled up and I go into episodes some times.

i'm 19 and my doctor won't even mention benzos for my anxiety. unless your doctor is negligible i doubt he would consider prescribing a 16 year old benzos...i am not looking down at you or anything..i'm just saying, it doesn't happen a lot because benzos have a very high risk of dependance.

@OP, have you tried any dietary changes? How about exercise? You'd be surprised how simple yet effective alternative forms of treatment are.

I recommend that you try adding the following to your diet:

-Omega 3
-Vitamin D
-Multivitamin
-Coconut Oil
-Protein

I drink a protein mixture before and after I got to the gym that has got coconut milk and protein whey and a bunch of other vitamins, Exercise I can bench 75% of my bodyweight, I can run a mile in 6 minutes.

Ive gotten them before after I got out of surgery valium 10mg's but I was distracted with other stuff there not strong at all.

Getting valium for a surgery is completely different from having it prescribed for long term use. I would recommend asking your primary care doc/pediatrician/general practitioner (whoever it is you see) about putting you on an antidepressant that will help with anxiety. Perhaps they will also write a small script for something like klonopin .25 or attivan .5 for 14 days until the SSRI kicks in.

In the meantime you should also ask for a referral to a therapist/psychologist. At your age I do not think benzos would be a good choice. I used to work in Family Practice and we never prescribed them to teens. They would get lexapro or paxil and maybe vistaril (an antihistamine). Buspar is pretty much a sugar pill imo. If we thought a teen might need something stronger we would send them to a Psychiatrist.

Just thinking outloud here, isn't it counter productive for them to prescribe a benzodiazepine until the Anti-Depressant kicks in? I mean by then they will already be used to benzos so they'll just stick with that without giving the AD a chance.

No, we used to do it all the time. It is a pretty common practice. If you use a low enough dose it isn't a big deal as far as the body getting used to it. You don't write for more than 15 pills at a low dose, it is PRN, not at a scheduled interval. Usually something like klonopin.

Say you put someone on zoloft, you start at 50mg 1x daily and give a script for 15 klonopin .5 as needed.

If they want more pills after the initial period it raises red flags, and you usually just increase the zoloft to 100mg and refer to a therapist.

But why wouldn't it raise red flags? I guess my question is, wouldn't most people raise red flags?

why wouldn't what raise red flags? i am not sure you understand me, and vice versa.

someone who is asking for more benzos at a one month checkup after starting an SSRI either needs a psychiatrist to manage his or her medication or (if they are young) is likely drug seeking or just lacks coping skills.

I understand, I was just thinking outloud in that I wonder how many people who get to try benzos right away like that end up seeing a psychiatrist and then getting on benzos without ever really trying alternative forms of medication.

ah yes, i see...it is a tough call. you don't want to deny the person who needs it, but it is so hard to tell who really needs it vs. who thinks they need it kwim?
