Ok, so this is not new news.
It was already old news when it resurface a few weeks back.

Can we take this 'news' at face value ?

Is big pharma waiting to build a climate of fear then bleed the tax payer dry in 5 or ten years time?

There is talk of a loosening of regulations to enable them to deal with this, can we assume thier desire to loosen regulations is purley greed driven or is some change needed ?
[ i mean we've all done new and newish RCs and lived to tell the tale...]

Is this the end of life as we know it or the dark before the dawn of a new era of medicine ?

Anyone have an opinion or even give two hoots?

I give three hoots.

Scary shit. I never take anti-b's if I can help it. In the last 5 yrs i've used them about 3 times. Some children seem to be on them constantly, I think with some conditions (especially in kids) it depends if your GP is cautious or not.

This is not scaremongering or a conspiracy by 'Big Pharma' this is a VERY real and present danger. Antibiotic resistance is a massive concern and it is a problem that is becoming more and more pressing each day, affecting a wider range of pathogens and encompassing a wider range of antibiotics per pathogen.

One of the main concerns is that a new type of antibiotic drug has not been patented since '89 and this is now the focus of a lot of current research. Interestingly instead of using molecular techniques to create new antibiotics, most of the current research has focused on looking to nature, plants, animals and even other bacteria. Not so surprising when you think of how antibiotics came about in the first place, all thanks to a Penicillum mold.

Unfortunately your avoidance of antibiotics won't make any difference as it's the other life forms, not bandandwicked or the children you know about, that are developing resistance :\

I suppose its a bit like recycling, after reading about the paper factory that Pinkpapaver set alight it makes my "religious" dedication to the environment seem a bit pointless... doubt it will change my habits though :)

i would say that it is a bit of both myself. there certainly are resistant bacteria. bacteria are always mutating aren't they? i say breast feed your children!

another thing i will say is yes, nature is the key. something somewhere is always getting bombarded with some sort of pathogen. maybe we should be genetically modified just like disease resistant plants. (oooh, doncha just love science?)

a few years back i had really terrible acne. really really terrible. was very sore, had all the glands in my face up. i'm a real "it'll get better on it's own " sort of person. so it just got worser and worser and worser still. One night i was asleep and i dreamt that I was eating mouldy bread. How strange is that that that i dreamt about eaxactly what i needed. i did go and get the antibiotics, but I dod thin kthere is a little trace of the infection still there. under the surface like.

would anyone be willing to take a RC anti-biotic ?

or are we only brave if the untested drug gives us a buzz ?

I am sure antibiotics have saved countless lives since they have been used. They have been abused and overprescribed by the medical profession. Its like when someone arrives in the doctors they are given an antibiotic and they go away happy
In recent years when l have had colds and infections in chest l have been taking Garlic. Raw garlic is a natural antibiotic and works wonders for me
Much cheaper too.
I do imagine there are times when stronger antibiotics will be needed but if things keep going in the same way most antibiotics will be ineffective anyway

Is definitely a big problem. Unfortunately not one most of us can do much about cos although we're pretty bad for overprescribing anti-bios here in the UK we're nowhere near as bad as some places. There are plenty of countries where you can buy them OTC - even as single pills which do fuck all anyway beyond placebo and letting the lil bugs know what to look out for. Is a problem that'll get far worse before it gets better methinks :\

Was watching summat about this issue t'other day and it pointed out that the relatively recent obsession with antibacterial soaps, washing up liquids and so forth are exacerbating the problem. Bloody stupid idea so they are. They're never gonna kill off all the bugs on you or your stuffs so all they're doing is helping to accelarate the evolution of resistant strains.

No. They're not the kinda drugs that should ever be on the RC market. It's people self-medicating and/or demanding antibios from their GP when they're of no use (colds, flu and the like) that's causing the problem.

Mānuka Honey is one of the most wonderful and natural Antibiotics available at the moment:
A friend of and ex of mine who was from Australia was on a course of Antibiotics for an infection in his leg.
He'd tried practically all pharmaceutical Antibiotics that should have had an effect on him for ages, then he was told by her to take one teaspoon of Mānuka Honey a day and his infection cleared up within the space of a couple of weeks!
Wonderful stuff :)

But yea, as a species, we're running out of Antibiotics that will work against certain bacteria whom are evolving at an alarming rate.
And the only hope we have is to research organisms in the deepest and darkest of caves et. al. to find others that would have a brilliant effect on them.
There was a BBC documentary on it not too long ago. And the lengths they're going to to find such things is immense and extremely necessary if we've any hope to murkin dem bacteria dem!
But it's just a case of cat and mouse - We gain stronger Antibiotics and the bacterium evolve. It's a fucking miniature arms race :\

Lets not forget the use of antiobiotics in the meat production industry. Thats the main reason I would buy organic meat & milk if I could afford it.

absolutely, it's disgraceful that shit goes on.

I do not get on well with antibiotics and had an allergic reaction last time i had some, it's better to not use them atall if possible.
