Hey all, put off becoming a member for too long. Anyway, I'm a lifelong Oklahoma City resident, except for a few years in Baton Rouge. I play in a few different red dirt bands, so if you like red dirt, hit me up.

G'day Johnny & welcome to BL!

I put off the jump of joining for a couple years myself, real glad I did eventually joined up we got a great community here. :)

Thanks everyone for the greetings. Red dirt basically a subgenre of country music that got popular in the early 90s along with the alternative movement. In Texas, they call it "texas country". It's a mix of classic country, rock and roll, and grunge. It can be really alternative like Wilco, or it can be a new breed of southern rock like the Drive By Truckers, but a good blend of it all would be in bands like Cross Canadian Ragweed or Jason Boland and the Stragglers. Of course it moves into other medias like painting, photography, and the like. It was really just a way for the southwest part of the country to find its voice, that it was okay to sing grunge or pop in a southern accent without being labelled as the typical crap you would hear on a country music station. I don't consider that stuff country music, but that's a whole other story!

Yes, technically I'm a steel guitar player! If you don't know what that is, imagine a regular guitar with 4 more strings laying on it's back with legs coming out of the bottom to make it like a table. Then I play it only with a slide in my left hand, no fingers. After you're done imagining, google that s$%t!! Haha

Thanks trainspotter!

Hey JohnnyIm', impressed with steel guitar players. Most people don't really know how difficult it is to play.I used to love how Rusty Young from the band Poco would play, using a Leslie and other things to get so many different tones. Is yours a pedal steel? A friend of mine had one but I never got into it.I play regular acoustic and electric guitar since the early70" Then my Dad got me an electric guitar and amp kit so we could put it together,He was very patient And got em both done before Christmas. And that was the beginning of my Luthier career.Yea,Now I'm a custom acoustic and the occasional electric. builder.
I checked out some of your red dirt music and liked all I heard.I just listened to about 5 songs on You Tube but I'll hear more for sure. but it did soundgood like southern rock some and I love that.I got to see Ronnie and the boys up close in concert Twice!!
The Drive by truckers-awesome! so was canadian ragweed. Glad you joined and we can talk music anytime you'ld like....Andy

You nailed it! I am a pedal steel player. Specifically in the 10 string e9 tuning. Since you like those bands, you should check out mine on YouTube and iTunes also. Our name is red eye gravy and we are psycho country is what I would call it.. We have a big West Coast and Northwest from Kansas to Washington tour coming up in August supporting a band called Rev. Horton heat. We will also be at the Wakarusa festival in Arkansas coming up in a few weeks. It started out as kind of a hippie festival but has branched out and is a big deal now. And also you are a lucky dog getting to see LS twice!

Yeah, getting to see the original guys in LS was a thrill I'll never forget. It was a long time ago at small venue- Kent state university. It was just after their 2nd album came out. They all were pretty wasted but played their asses off. Here's a funny story. Some guy I knew from back in school was in front and handed Ronnie a joint. He took a couple tokes walked around giving the others some then brought back a roach that he has framed on his wall now. They were drinkers and fighters but played some of the best music I've heard. I'll give you guys a listen on You tube...Congrats on the up coming tour !

Hey Okie :) !!!
Hahaha, so awesome to see a username that is also my "nickname" ;) ~ LoL! & Dude, RED DIRT ROCKS..!!!!
Actually got my first taste of the "dirty side of country" in Toronto, after a particularly tuff gig I was doing up there (not musically though, I've been a professional photographer for a couple of decades now). Even though I now hail from
The 50th state (Hawaii) I still have a lotta family up there from OK to CO & as far down as AZ & NM (& so I'm told - even farther south then that ;) ). Haha, I'm kinda a wide & diversely spread out kinda dude I guess ~ LoL!!! Dang brother, would seriously LOOOOVE to hear some of that good ol' down & dirty groove that I'd only heard once while sadly enough, I didn't have the opportunity to truly enjoy it :/
Well, anyhows.. Glad you're a part of our most awesome forums & family now. Really lookin' forward to seeing ya in the various threads/forums on here
Peace & aloha,
~ N3f ✌:)

Hey N3f, from what I hear there's a decent amount of really good red dirt being made in Canada. To tell you the truth, I spend so much time behind the guitar, I can tell you more about the individual steel guitar players there than I can about specific bands! My band just joined a production company, so I get to spend even less time having to book or promote shows. Any professional musician knows how bad trying to book shows sucks. Trying to get two stoners/alcoholics/whatever to agree on anything is hard enough. Add dates, money, merchandise, you get the idea. Any local Toronto country bands I should know about?
