Anorexia

i would not judge you for contemplating going to extremes to control your weight--i have a roommate who struggles with the same issue and i can see how frustrating it is to try so hard and to feel like your failing at losing weight. the thing is you are not failing, your body is not failing--what you are and have been doing is failing.

i'm going into a career in naturopathic medicine/nutrition and what most people don't understand is that calories in calories out is oversimplified and that carbohydrates are the one thing that make you fat. i know you're only 16 and i know nothing about your background in science so i will try to keep this simple, but not insultingly simple, because i'm sure you're a smart girl ;)

all carbohydrates that one eats are converted into sugar. all of them. this means that you are doing the same thing to your body, insulin levels, metabolism, and tendency to store fat whether you are eating a bowl of shredded wheat or a bowl of white sugar. in fact, most breakfast cereals have more of an impact on blood sugar than pure sugar. having chronically elevated blood sugar levels leads to insulin resistance, a condition that causes your cells to become desensitized to the effects of sugar in the blood, causing you to store fat and then in turn be constantly hungry, since it is all being stored as fat. this is obviously a vicious cycle that causes weight gain and constant hunger and is the basis for failure of high-carb diets.

what you need to do is adopt a low-carb, high-fat diet. eat a lot of meat, eggs, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. cheese is a good choice as well, if you choose to eat dairy, since it is very high in fat and protein as well as low in carbs. eat NO starches (grains, potatoes) and NO sugar (pretty obvious, but avoid sweets and all fruits except the occasional cup of low-carb berries). eating a lot of fat is very satisfying and decreases appetite. forget all the bullshit you heard about the food pyramid and whole wheat, processed junk, just keep your carbs as low as possible and do not worry about calories or fat.

i used to struggle with horrible mood swings (from being on the insulin roller coaster i described) and body image issues. this has worked amazingly for me and it makes me feel and look bomb. i also do crossfit and so this may come from a biased angle, but keep exercising--muscle is absolutely sexy on a girl!

if you want to know more just google "paleolithic nutrition" or pm me. i love to cook and have found it incredibly easy to make satisfying and wholesome food without grains or sugar, so i can help you with recipes/ideas of dank stuff to eat/etc.

this^^^

just avoid carbs, and stress. i was just reading a magazine about how stress causes your body to increase production of a hormone called cortisone. this hormone tells ur body to retain fat, and increase appetite (essentially setting urself up to be fat) so just take it easy, and try and stay healthy. PLUR

Not all carbs are bad. You just have to eat the right carbs, and this is where most people fall short. A diet that is high in fat and low in carbs can have some nasty side effects. Your body needs carbs. Atkins was designed to be a quick-fix... Something we love here in America. I would suggest the OP use the trusty old internet and spend some time reading about nutrition and losing weight the healthy way.

paleo is different from atkins in that it excludes processed foods and places an emphasis on grass-fed, organic, pastured, etc. it's about quality and not the number of carbs.

regardless, humans have eaten diets low in carbs for hundreds of thousands of years. before the advent of agriculture, there was no way to eat a lot of carbohydrates since the occasional fruit was the only thing available. humans ate mostly animal protein and fat and had an extremely low carb diet. the myth that people need "good carbs" such as whole wheat products is not supported by any science, but rather propagated by the companies (and their lobbyists) who make the so-called health food shit.

you can get carbs from vegetables and a few fruits, just as all living people did for all but 1% of human history.

You cant lose weight because when you starve yourself your body goes into starvation mode where it is almost impossible to lose the last bit of fat. Rev up your metabolism by eating food. Stay away from white carbs and sugars. Eat plenty of protein and good fats . Please

This isn't completely true...if you don't take in any calories for an extended period of time, you WILL lose weight. Yes, when you do start eating again you will put it back on immediately, but to say you can't lose weight from not eating/barely eating anything isn't true either. I thought that was the case until I dropped 30 pounds in 3 months from barely eating.

I am struggling with my weight right now. I feel like I am at the end of my rope. In the last month I gained 12 pounds. I did not change my eating or physical activity. In the past 2 years I have gained probably 50 pounds. I have several medical issues - autoimmune disorder, hypothyroidism, fibromyalgia, depression and hell I could go on and on.

I have never had issues with my weight. I was always able to stay in a healthy zone. But, as I age, I find that I am in a very unhealthy time in my life. Because of the fibromyalgia, I find it difficult to exercise enough to make an inpact on my situation.

The FDA recently lowered the BMI requirements for the lapband and now I fall within the range. Of course I don't want surgery, in fact, I don't think it will change my weight. I think my issue is a hormonal/steroid imbalance in my body.

Anyways, I sorta got side tracked, don't try doing the whole eating disorder thing. It is just a temparory fix. Just like self medicating. If you have health insurance, find out if they have a nutritional program/specialist you can see.

you totally lose fat when you don't eat... biology anyone? That's WHY you have fat, it is high caloric storage for when you don't have food.. kind of basic there

If you stop eating, yeah you go into starvation mode and burn fat slower, but you do burn it, and when it's gone, you start destroying your muscle to survive. Eventually your organs get broken down. n then your dead

Nah your way off base. Your muscles start going as soon as the fat does. Especially when way undernourished/underfed. You end up skin and bones, which looks WAY unhealthy. And your metabolism basically freezes. Super unhealthy.

I don't want to offend you OP, but if I'm completely honest this thread makes me incredibly angry. You make it sound so easy to just jump into this "new diet" when some of us - n3o and myself included - have lived through the most horrible eating disorders imaginable.

I think she (n3o) pretty much summed everything up that I want to say.

I'll finish by saying that you will never, ever feel good if you treat your body the way you're describing. Your hair will lose its shine, it will get dry and it will start to fall out. Your skin will get sallow, blemished and have an unhealthy tinge. Your fingernails will break. You will have no energy. You will not be able to concentrate for long periods of time. You will be lazy, lethargic, depressed and you will have constant headaches.

I know this because I've lived it. Not through some silly misguided choice. Through a disease. A disease that robbed me of many years of my life.

Skinny never feels as good as healthy.

Another former anorexic/eating-disordered person piping in here! Don't do it. Eating disorders are hell and can leave your body with long-term problems even from short stints. Losing weight through anorexia or similar disorders leaves you mentally fucked-up and your brain doesn't function well in addition to the rest of your body breaking itself down.
You don't want to end up with your hair falling out and dry, splotchy skin. The malnutrition makes you age a lot faster too. There are soooo many physical and mental repercussions from anorexia, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
With all that exercise you do I bet you've got a great body that you should love and appreciate! Being a healthy, athletic girl is fantastic and sexy. You're still going through puberty so let your body just do it's thing and nourish it properly.
If you haven't already, you may want to check your diet and see how balanced it is in terms of macronutrients and vitamins/minerals. Substituting certain parts of your diet with more protein (like having a big delicious protein shake for breakfast!) could help, and I suggest you look into information on proper nutrition on the web, or even see a nutritionist if you are able.
Good luck girl!

Anorexia is not a choice or a lifestyle. Being an IV meth addict doesn't help the situation. Top that off with bipolar disorder and let's see how glamorous it is. I weigh 80 lbs, my body is covered in soft blonde hair, my body's last protection to keep me warm. I'm a skeleton of who I used to be. I would never wish this misery on anyone else. Find a different way to lose weight.
