Amphetamines and Zyprexa

My son regularly overdoses on dexamphetamines and ends up in hospital because of serious psychotic symptoms. He believes that dexies(I call them that) are actually good for him and says that if he takes a combination of zyprexa with dexies, it will not make him psychotic. Has anyone done that?

All zyprexa would do is reduce symptoms of psychosis. Its an anti-psychotic. In no way good for your brain.

Not sure how bad it is compared to seroquel but seroquel after heavy use seemed to dull my wits extremely.

recurring hospitalization is a sign that he probably needs help.
 
A lot of people who abuse amphetamines look to the atypical antipsychotics to deal with the come down. They're not going to do a whole lot to prevent psychosis if he's only taking them on an adhoc basis. Your son's stated reason for taking them together may be something he thinks is going to sound reasonable to you - some people use that combination to try to mimic the effects of a speedball (heroin/cocaine combo). Amphetamines themselves can cause serious cardiac arrhythmias and so can the atypical antipsychotics like Zyprexa, so taking them together isn't risk-free.

If he's had multiple psychotic episodes then he would benefit from being admitted to a dual diagnosis facility for further evaluation in order to determine whether the amphetamines alone are causing the psychosis or whether there's an underlying major mental health disorder which is being exacerbated by amphetamine use.
 
If he is ODing on dextroamphetamine he's going to run into more problems then psychosis. Ive had a fair share of dexie binges and on atleast 2 occasions i thought i was having a heart attack. Zyprexa isint going to stop the cardiac side effects and as lolie said it an cause it's own cardiac problems.

The zyprexa will help bring him down and can help during amphetamine psychosis but other then that he is still going to put his body through hell because of the dexedrine. Really i would try and get him some help because amphetamines are one class of drugs that can leave you pretty fucked up. He can't keep taking them forever without some serious consequences that is for sure. Also if he has any preexisting mental problems dextroamphetamine will make them 1000 times worse and all the zyprexa in the world won't help that.

Really all the zyprexa is doing is maybe keeping him from going completely insane on the speed but that won't last too long. Ive known people who have ODed on amphetamines and have had psychosis that lasted for a hell of a long time after they stopped taking the drugs. Anti-psychotics only do so much.
 
The combination of Dex + Zyprexa is safe.

Despite popular belief, the risk of heart attack from Dex is extremely low.
One would develop psychotic symptoms (probably from sleep deprivation) long before any hart trouble.
At therapeutic doses, Dex can safely be taken for 20 + years.

And the risk of heart trouble from Zyprexa is negligible.
I would be more worried about gut and bowel issues from the Zyprexa than anything else.
 
/\ Its absolutely not safe if someones abusing their dex. She said her son "commonly" ODs on dexies and takes zyprexa for the psychosis. Although you are talking about heart attacks I don't really give a shit about heart attacks, that would be one of the better things that could happen to a person abusing amphetamines. Losing your mind however is where the real risk lies. I can't name any other drug other than amphetamines that has its own psychosis linked to it. And its a living nightmare to get through that shit sober off the speed or even on it for that matter.

Look lady I'll be honest. If your son is abusing his dexies get him into rehab asap. I've binged on amphetamines A LOT back in the day (likey around his age) and it took 8 years to get over the general side effects which are horrific.
The pyschosis will continue to escalate and get worse in correlation to the amount he uses. I was
do deep into my psychosis that zyprexa did very little although it helped once I stopped for the first year.
Still, by him combining zyprexa with dex he's only logically allowing his brain to take on more trauma from the dex then it should. And although he will be too sedated on the zyprexa to realize it, when the day comes he has to stop it he will realize it was just covering up shit.

I don't personally suggest any type of addict mixes dex with zyprexa as it only enables you to do more and more and keep taxing your brain. If he wasn't using the zyprexa, he'd likely be using less dex too. And I'm telling you long term abuse of any sort of amphetamine is not pretty. Its a fucking nightmare imo what they did to me at such a young age.

Get your son to rehab, or go to Nalanon meetings and learn how to stop enabling him (most parents enable in one way or another). Thats if hes not willing to clean his act up though, Nalanon taught my mom how to be a warrior against my addiction which helped me a lot when I was younger. It also caused fights but it was still for the best. Sadly however no 2 addicts journey through addiction is ever the same. Can only wish the best for you.
 
Interesting thread. Dopamine receptor antagonists, like antipsychotics- Zyprexa, largely block the effects of stimulants in animal models. Sufficient receptor occupancy should have the same effect in humans, though I can't say from personal experience.

Since your son already likes Zyprexa, why not introduce him to Zyprexa Relprevv, a formulation made for deep intramuscular injection done by a healthcare worker that will last 2-4 weeks. It will likely rid him of his psychosis and help that damnable tweaker habit, to boot!
