It is widely believed that Methylphenidate and Amphetamines share a cross tolerance.

I would like to share my personal account which demonstrates this might not be entirely accurate.

I am diagnosed with a moderately severe case of ADHD. Though I have exhibited symptomes of the condition throughout my entire life. I was not diagnosed until I was 21 and started my academic studies. I have been perscribed Methylphenidate as an adjunct for CBT. It should be noted that I was -very- tolerant to the drug from the get go and required very high doses to receive symptomatic relief: 108mg daily for the XR formulation, Concerta, 80mg daily for the SR formulation and 20mgX3 daily for the IR formulation.

I have used Methylphenidate periodically in the 3 years i've been perscribed it and never had to increase or decrease the dose even after short periods of abuse. I can roughy estimate that the net time I have been on Methylphenidate is about 1 year(this is not counting the time I had the perscription but did not take it) The only significant side effects from it were anorexia and the emergence of obsessive ticks. These would always go away after taking a 2-3 days break and letting the drug clear from my body completely.

So with this introduction and natural tolerance to Methylphenidate in mind we can compare my reaction to amphetamine.

My experience with Amphetamines includes: Methamphetamine(both Crystal and Desoxyn), Adderall and MDMA. Though the latter is irrelevant to the comparison it is important to note regardless, and was technically the first chemical in this class I ingested.

My first with classic Amphetamine was Methamphetamine in the form of extremely pure crystal. I have used it sporadically over a period of approximately 1 year. In this year I took mostly 10-20mg orally for concentration and found it to be somewhat of a panacea. I was dramatically affected by small doses and didn't exhibit the natural tolerance I did with Methylphenidate. I consumed roughly 400mg over that year. The most curious was taking 10mg of Desoxyn for a SAT-like test after taking Methylphenidate chronically at 60mg daily for three months leading up to the test(including the day before it). The subjective effects were as strong as they had ever been(which is at the same level as the very first day I took Meth). I aced the test btw =P.

Fast forward to this week. I am taking a pre-med course and have been taking Methylphenidate chronically again. This is following a period of abuse of a few months where I would take upwards of 100mg IR daily(mostly oral). I happened across some Adderall and used it to cram some physics as my experience with Meth taught me Amphetamines increase my ability to comprehend abstract concepts as opposed to simply providing symptomatic relief. I took 20mg of Adderall IR after a period of around 4 months straight on Methylphenidate(60-100mg daily). I can honestly say that the subjective effects were almost indistinguishable from my first Meth experience apart from the slower onset. I felt the effects strongly for about 6 hours and even enjoyed a mild empathogenic push ala MDMA. At one point looking at the view outside I let out a euphoric "wow" which those of you who rolled know very well.

Lastly, after the effects subsided I took 10mg of Methylphenidate as a neuroprotectant(along with other antioxidants). Assuming cross-tolerance I was expecting the acute tolerance to translate over. However I was very unpleasantly surprised. The Methylphenidate brought the mental effects of Adderall right back up with added compounded peripheral side effects including pretty severe vasoconstriction. If anything, a synergy between two substances is a strong indicator for non-competitive action and implies different pharmacodynamics.

This post is long enough as it is so i'll spare you my pharmacological theories on the matter. Suffice to say I react with dramatically different levels of sensitivity to Methylphenidate and Amphetamine and long periods of taking the former seem to have no effect on my tolerance to the latter.

Would love to hear your opinions and thanks for reading through.
