Therapeutic opioid use and abuse coupled with the nonmedical use of other psychotherapeutic drugs has shown an explosive growth in recent years and has been a topic of great concern and controversy.

Americans, constituting only 4.6% of the world’s population, have been consuming 80% of the global opioid supply, and 99% of the global hydrocodone supply, as well as two-thirds of the world’s illegal drugs.8o

With the increasing therapeutic use of opioids, the supply and retail sales of opioids are mirrored by increasing abuse in patients receiving opioids, nonmedical use of other psychotherapeutic drugs (in this article the category of psychotherapeutics includes pain relievers, tranquilizers, stimulants, and sedatives, but does not include over-the-counter drugs), emergency department visits for prescription controlled drugs, exploding costs, increasing incidence of side effects, and unintentional deaths. However, all these ills of illicit drug use and opioid use, abuse, and non-medical use do not stop with adults.

It has been shown that 80% of America’s high school students, or 11 million teens, and 44% of middle school students, or 5 million teens, have personally witnessed, on the grounds of their schools, illegal drug use, illegal drug dealing, illegal drug possession, and other activities related to drug abuse.

The results of the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed that 7.0 million or 2.8% of all persons aged 12 or older had used prescription type psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically in the past month, 16.387 million, or 6.6% of the population, had used in the past year, and 20.3%, or almost 49.8 million, had used prescription psychotherapeutic drugs nonmedically during their lifetime. Sadly, the initiates of psychotherapeutic drugs used for nonmedical purposes were highest for opioids.

Therapeutic opioid use has increased substantially, specifically of Schedule II drugs. Apart from lack of effectiveness (except for short-term, acute pain) there are multiple adverse consequences including hormonal and immune system effects, abuse and addiction, tolerance, and hyperalgesia. Patients on long-term opioid use have been shown to increase the overall cost of healthcare, disability, rates of surgery, and late opioid use.

Based largely upon the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (1) and a review of the current literature, this article describes a 10-year perspective on the complex and complicated interrelationships between the therapeutic use of opioids and other psychotherapeutics and the consequences of escalating use, abuse, and nonmedical use as it affects this nation’s problems of substance abuse, mental health, disability, and our ailing healthcare system.

Did you want the references from the paper? There are 94 references... bit large to post.

well I dont know, maybe it is true

I just dont know how this study could claim that the USA consumes two thirds of the world's "illegal drugs." I mean, how would you survey how much "illegal drugs" exist in the world?

I think I understand now...

1. Government not happy people are sending money off shore for drugs;
2. Declare war on drugs;
3. Develop drugs within America that can substitute for drugs covered by "War on Drugs";
4. Give people multiple diagnosis;
5. Prescribe drugs (Methamphetamine, Opiates, anything you want);
6. Tax drugs that are being prescribed;
7. Government happy.

I love conspiracy theories :)

Hell yes! :D

Finally we're recognized for something good for a change.

This is the place to come party, that's for sure. =D

I'm sick of ignorance in the medical community about narcotic medications. Its 2008 people. Get with it. You'd be surprised that some of their statistics of "patients" who "abuse" their medications are merely patients who are physically dependent on their meds because of long term use. But unfortuantly in 14 states THAT is seen as drug addiction. Yes, taking your medicine as prescribed, never abusing it once, you still catch that physical dependence. They label you a drug seeker and addict. Ain't that a bitch? This is only in certain states mind you. I can't think of any of the 14 at the moment.

I'm not surprised at all.

thats what i thought. i seriously doubt anyone has a realistic estimation of how much drugs are consumed in the developing world, let alone how much drugs are even produced worldwide.

i believe the figures about the US taking the lion's share of prescription opioids though. America is the pharmaceutical society.

^damn skippy, there are 3 different pharmaceutical companies in the 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones average, not to mention a couple chemical companies to supply them.

its horrible that some countries dont have ANY opiates (only a couple) and i feel so bad for those people as well as every other third world country that doesnt have enough opiates and people have to have surgery / operations / amputations WITHOUT painkillers.... and we have so much the black market is flooded with painkillers for people to use to get high, when theres people who actually NEED them so they can bear to have medical procedures done.

"two-thirds of the world’s illegal drugs"

I dont believe that at all. no fuckin wayy

Are you kidding me? Quote brought to you by the manufacturers of non-opiate based analgesics.
