Stuck on a rock trying not to smoke a rock!!
My neurologist has prescribed me amantadine for fatigue (I have M.S.), does anyone have experience with it? I currently use ethylphenidate when I literally can't get out of bed. Can't find much info on the net about it.

Any help would be appreciated.
P.s. I'm not trying to get a high off it.

Say what? Plenty of experience. Oh wait....amantadine.....very little ;) It is used off label for chronic fatigue ....I tried it for its NMDA antagonism, for which it was unremarkable. But it does cause release of dopamine and norepinephrine....in my few one off uses it made me feel kinda jittery and dysphoric, but I would imagine that the effect you are searching for would be cumulative, so I can't speak on such...

An added bonus is that it is antiviral...and has a bitching chemical structure. Looks like a baseball cap!

Keep us posted...I'm curious....

My neurologist told me it only works for about 50% of people and if I'm not getting any use after a couple of months just to stop.
I know what does work for me modifinal but not a chance of me getting it in UK, well not from my GP.

Been on amantadine a week now. 200mgs in the morning after breakfast with all my other vitamins. It definitely lessens fatigue in the morning. But very subtly. I was hoping for a more gotta get up and start doing things effect. I still need to force myself out of bed sometimes, guess I'm kinda lazy.

Sorry a little off topic..apologies Stereo mic just wondered if you smoked weed?
I personally don't ..yep hard to believe! But I ask on behalf of one of my oldest friend who is really struggling with her MS and it had occurred to me it may be helping her MS symptoms or is it in fact actually worsening them? I understand everything affects people differently.. Sorry to butt in..just curious.

Sounds interesting amantadine..may have to do some reading on it. I am always fatigued but then again I suffer with extreme sleep problems and do a plethora of drugs more often than I should..and forget to take my anemia medications often..so hardly surprising really 8)

Will certainly be interested to know if she is prescribed it will report back if she has anything of interest to comment.

^Yeah I do smoke weed when I can afford it. It helps me with body spasms, doesn't stop them just makes them less violent. For me smoking a bong before bed is as effective as 2mg clonazepam or a couple of beers.

The amantadine is a weird one, think it was first used as an anti-viral then for Parkinson's. My GP even said that they didn't know why it works for fatigue.

The level of fatigue I feel now, last few months, is a new symptom for me. The link you posted above is excellent, I'm not done reading it yet, I will and I think showing it to family and friends will explain how I feel better than I could ever do.

Thanx you've made my morning.

Yeh I thought it was interesting and fairly well written and by someone who had taken into consideration people's experience of symptoms rather than just another medical journal article wittering on in academic speak from their stance..very irritating though that you can't seem to get the links to work for the following pages..maybe it's just me?
Any way if it has helped in anyway that brightens my day too. M.S is so complex and life altering. Hope your treatments go well <3

dunno about amantadine but i have used and still occasionally use modafinil. I am now finding that this is leading to a bit of a 'mood crash' when it starts to wear off after about 8 hours. Re-dosing doesnt work IME, it leads to a great deal of irritabilty. So the choice seems to be whether to take the good 8 hours it gives you and deal with the crash afterwards, or not take it at all and patiently wait for your brain to restore its natural equilibrium.

Ideally I'd want to be on modifinal, got 60 a few years ago, took 1 a day til I ran out. I didn't notice much of a crash or feel that bad when I ran out. As far as meds that fight fatigue go I think it is the best, I had no temptation to abuse it, try get high from them. All the other stuff I've used for fatigue, the prescribed stuff was all useless and the stuff I got either not prescribed to me or illegal I ended up abusing.
