Sometimes when I think about my drug use I think about the other users I know. I never really liked using the word "addict", especially when referring to marijuana. I've wondered for some time now am I the exception to the rule?
I have smoked daily for years, between one and two grams per day in fact, but recently I've gotten into some legal trouble so I've quit for the time being. I don't like to smoke in the mornings unless I have absolutely nothing to do all day but dick around on the web or play video games. I've never been able to smoke at work and remain productive so I just don't do it. I'm a very attentive safety conscious driver so I wont drive for hours after I smoke. Some of my friends say I roll my joints too fat (like I said 1 or 2 grams at a time), but I'm the kind of person who likes to smoke till I'm high, no "catching a little buzz" for me thank you. I've kept the same job for 6 years, I have a wife, two wonderful kids who have never seen me smoke. I'm not an overachiever for sure but I'm not a slacker either. What I'm really curious about is, are we common? Are the Cheech and Chong caricatures becoming a thing of the past? I'm not by any means condemning those who wake and bake or smoke all day but I'd love to get a baseline of the Average Joe of the pothead community? Is the cartoon character version of our subculture hurting us by quantifying or helping us by making marijuana's prohibition seem like a huge joke? Is the productive pothead the punchline or the straight man in the farce? Weigh in please.

Once you're not experiencing insomnia, anxiety, mood-swings, cravings, lack of motivation, etc.. from stopping using pot then I won't say you're an addict neither.

As long as you remain being your own idea of a "functional" pot head then good for you! I'm quite happy as I am quite the same. I don't like to smoke during the day unless I have absolutely nothing to do and I more reserve my heavy use for the weekends and I hate just "catching a buzz" I love getting high!

Good for you showing society that pot-heads can be functional! It definitely can be done regardless of who you are. Just in society ideas that glamorize over-indulgence in various drugs (not just weed) have most people becoming fuel for the war against drugs.

Peace man, Fly safe!

I never really thought about how decedent the Cheech and Chong characters are until now. I guess I was just thinking that the pot back then was cheap so a little bit of money could get you really high all the time. Then again, its a film and exaggerations are to be expected. Despite whether I like it or not I do prefer to see someone stay high all day on pot than knee walking drunk or blown in the creek on pharmaceuticals. I'm afraid though that a large reason why a lot of decriminalization and outright legalization measure have been stalled though because of this, stoner culture that really doesn't represent us as a whole.
I feel that the legal alcohol concept doesn't follow the same rules though. I would love to see how big ad executives would treat a marijuana cigarette commercial compared to the way alcohol is represented. I drink on occasion, and I've been drunk before and it's nothing like the commercials. I've never seen the Budweiser commercial where just two guys are sitting around drinking, one crying cause his daddy doesn't love him while the other tires to give some existential spiel about how you must love your self because he's just the greatest friend someone could ever have.

Your post reminds me of the quote by I don't remember who, "Why cocaine isn't addictive. I've been doing it for years!"

Reminds me of a similar quote about cigarettes by Mark Twain, "Quitting smoking is easy, I've quit hundreds of times!"

My guess is its easy because of the things you associate with it. Because marijauna's addictive potential is low and its effects not that strong it is easy for you to dismiss. I no problem with quitting cigarettes or barely smoking because i never associated it with things like being stressed or eating so the times i get cravings are maybe twice a day and if i ignore them they go away. I have been doing this for over a decade and some times i smoke a pack a day and sometimes not at all but the thing that is always true is it seems to be way easier for me then the people i know.

I dont think it is because you are different but rather because you have your life organized differently. I may not find cigarettes addictive because of how I choose to use them but i will not say i am different rather i have a schedule that made it easier for me to not do it too often, and it is that same discipline that makes it very easy to quit. I think it is the same for you in your situation.
