My friend works at a hostess bar and drinks every night.

Can you guys recommend anything for her to either:

A) Prevent damage from the alcohol
B) Give her a high tolerance or make her.."immune" to the alcohol,
etc?

=)

Edit: Sorry, I should have clarified when I said hostess bar. It's a bar that men can drink with young pretty girls. They are sometimes charged a cover fee, table fee, etc, and purchased overpriced drinks (beers, shots, etc are usually $20 each). If a man buys you a shot for $20, half of that goes into your pocket. The more drinks the guys buy for you, the more money you make. Depending on the bar, manager, etc, they usually goal you at having one drink every 15minutes. Not drinking is not an option.

I kind of mad her sound like an alcoholic..I swear she's not! Lol.

As a professional drinker I can say that the only way to get tolerance is to drink all the time, or eat a hell of a lot before you drink. As for the damage? Alcohol is bad for every cell in your system, to make it less toxic all I know of is to dilute your drinks as much as possible, take vitamins, and live a healthy lifestyle. No matter what, every day will take it's toll on her.

Wish I knew more.

Coffee has increasing evidence that it prevents liver damage in heavy drinkers, statistically-no guarantee for individuals. Taurine the almost amino acid in energy drinks has a couple animal studies showing it can reverse alcoholic fatty liver. Glutamine has claims made for it that it reduces cravings for alcohol. Glutamine can help rebuild mucosa that protects the stomach lining. Chronic drinking can dissolve mucosa giving alcoholics chronic stomach discomfort and malabsorption issues. My experience is that glutamine for the alcoholic gastritis only works really well combined with less drinking or abstinence. Magnesium is depleted by alcohol over consumption. Magnesium helps with a lot of stuff associated with alcoholism.

I got more but I'm drawing a blank atm.

She sounds like she has a serious problem and needs to stop drinking. If she can't do that at work she should find another job. If that was my friend I'd be worried for her. :(

"this way to your barstool, sir"

"oh no no please do not slump in that direction, sir"

I have the best most awesome cure for any aches and illnesses associated with drinking...

*highlight the line below to reveal the answer!*

stop drinking

I'm with Deja. If she can't curb her drinking because of the environment, quit the job. It's not worth it.

I'm in no way advocating a healthy heavy drinker. But instead of saying "this is how it's gotta be" I'm going to try another route. I know when I was still on my rollercoaster of drugs, fitness, drugs, back to fitness, etc, I've always drank a LOT of water no matter which drugs I was taking/not taking. Water is essential to flushing all those toxins out of your body. I'm positive it helped me recover quickly from drug abuse and get back into decent shape.

There's no way to completely negate the horrible toll heavy drinking takes on one's body. However if they're not going to listen to you telling them to cut back on the booze, hopefully they'll take this little bit of advice:

Drink plenty of H2O
Take a good multi-vitamin
eat as healthy as you can

^^Nothing surprising right? Pretty simple and I'm sure one could figure out those 3 basic things on their own. But there's really no other answer.

Then again I may be wasting my keystrokes because if somebody's usually (with a few exceptions) that heavy a drinker, they dont' give a shit about their general health. That's why I usually just say "hello!! cut out the heavy drinking"

I don't know much about it but I believe Milk Thistle is supposed to help protect/heal the liver.

^ Yes, milk thistle seeds can help with the damage caused to the liver by alcohol. I've ground the seeds up and put them in porridge before, but it tastes disgusting so it's probably best to go with an extract, be it in capsules or tincture form.

Try and have her wait as long as possible before her first drink and then try to alternate between alcoholic and non/low alcoholic drink. Make the low/non drink something tasty though so you not thinking its missing someting.

B50 complex
Vit C
Magnesium
and Milk thistle are all good to add to the diet but if she is willing to stop and needs a hand then go to the gp's and get some naltrexone which is a tablet which removes the fun associated with drinking.

The problem with alcohol is she needs to want to stop for her own reasons - telling somebody who has an alcohol problem to stop drinking simply doesnt work.

I know a lot of people where I live who work in bars and they all seem to drink way too much, I drink a lot but they are every night at work and then nights they are not which never used to be prior to doing this job.

As some have said already having a low alcoholic or non alcoholic drink in between drinks is helpful, however getting her to stop drinking as much if she does not think there is a problem is damn near impossible.

Healthier diet, exercising and taking additional vitamins will help slightly but the truth of the matter is long term alcohol usage does screw up liver, kidneys brain function and makes your skin look like crap.

Tell her how you feel and see if you can have a calm discussion on it, suggest going to the doctor if the discussion goes well, if not maybe get in touch with AA for some general advice and support as a friend who wants to help.
good luck

friends dont send their friends to organizations who have as a main tenant that you are powerless and need to give up all power to a "HIGHER POWER". What a crock of fucking shit AA/NA is.

You are powerful. You need to quit under your own power.

ginseng is the only thing that enables me to drink. I have chronic lyme disease and even one drink will cause my lymph nodes to swell up to the size of golf balls as the toxic load in my body gets to be too much. When I drink ginseng (brew panax ginseng or eleutheuro root in tea) before drinking I do not get any negative symptoms or any signs that my immune system is compromised.

I have taken as many shots as I please (10+) after taking ginseng and I do not get hangovers when I do this. I also read that the fructose in ginseng can help speed up the clearance of alcohol in men by up to 25%. But I believe the true benefit from ginseng comes from its adaptogenic properties and the premise that it strengthens the body.

I'm just getting a list of supplements or products that I can get for her to really stop all this damage from her job. She's being so forgetful and clumsy. Although she doesn't love her job--it's good money.

Anyways, thank you for all your feedback. She's not the type to drink any kind of gross teas or anything that tastes really funky. If it came in neat, convenient pills on the other hand.... =)

you can get milk thistle extract fairly cheaply in pill form. I take it to protect my liver cuz I drink pretty regularly, and also work around some nasty chemicals.

A great deal of alcoholic liver pathology is that the liver converts alcohol to fat. The fat can come to clog up the works. There are many other factors. The liver puts everything on hold to take care of alcohol. Toxins and bad stuff are on hold waiting for the alcohol deluge to come to an end. This can be a lot of oxidative and other forms of toxic stress.

Milk thistle addresses anti-oxidant problems. It is OK in that regard. You want lipotropic factors to help keep the accumulated fat able to move and not block all the works going on in the liver. L-carnintine, lecithin, and fish oil are lipotropic. I suspect that some of coffees effects are related to being lipotropic also.

Bile flow is a big factor in liver health also. Coffee, dandelion root, taurine and other things improve bile flow.

Not a liver topic but lipoic acid helps prevent alcoholic neuropathy. It is a versatile anti-oxidant.

Medical literature says that alcoholic liver pathology does not always progress in a consistent fashion. Protective value of various substance are likely to vary greatly between individuals.

Abstinence and moderation are far superior to excessive use with possible protection from various supplements. But it would be rare for a person to be harmed by the preventative guesses given above , so why not?

That is unbelievably disgusting. :(
