I was hoping for some advice about hangovers.. My friend has been socially drinking for about 4 yrs, but every time she drinks, she either ends up vomiting at the end of the night, or the next day. She feels sick all day and shakes, gets realy pale etc.. The thing is, she doesnt drink herself to oblivion, like she gets tipsy/slightly drunk, but not massively wasted.
Does anyone else get sick like this? and does anything help to settle the stomach or help?>
thanks for ne help :)

Take a Berroca (sp) just before ya go to sleep...

its hard to stomach the taste of the Berroca...after drinking.... but you'll feel good the next day..

If im out on a binge I'll try n have one b4 i sleep.. if i remember ;)

Hi.

Yep a berocca is a great idea before hitting the sack and so is having a couple of gastolytes (rehydration, used for diarrhoea, vomiting etc). I religiously have a berocca and 4 gastolytes before bed after a night on the fiz and it makes the world of difference. (as hangovers are caused by the dehydration that alcohol causes)

If you want to take it to extremes i know people who have a losec(omeprazole) before they go out drinking and they claim it makes the world of difference.

Having a maxolon - metoclopramide ( antinauseant) before bed is also a good idea if you can get hold of some ( i believe you can buy anagraine - metoclopramide and paracetamol over the counter)

If your girlfriend tries this and is still average the next day i.e. nauseus and jst generally feeling unwell, ginger works a treat in some people or some more maxolon.

Hope this helps

You can possibly file this one under B for bullshit, but I heard once that a glass of milk before a drinking session will line the stomach with fats and slow down the absorbtion of alcohol. Even if it's a load of crap though, tell her it will work - sometimes a placebo is all people need!

Hmmm

past experiences with Berocca indicate that if i have berroca before i sleep i generally wake up Fine.

No stomach pains eurges to throw up....

Do you's have a decent feed before hitting the drinks.. because this will reduce the eurge to Yack......

Also if i have the berroca when i wake up after the big night out.. i've had trouble keeping it down, due to the taste.

Usually Greasy food will settle the stomach ! Bacon&egg McMuffin ?? Hash Browns ?

Thats all i can think of.

"All Drug's affect everyone differently"

Hope it helps your friend

yer or have a "Hairy Lemon" before you start drinking... much like berocca...

btw i also have a glass of milk before i go out :D

For some people fruit sugars (fructose) can make all the difference. This sugar replenishes NAD+ necessary as an enzyme cofactor in metabolising alcohol. Milk and/ or berocca are also good bits of advice.

Metoclopramide is on prescription only.

Anagraine is prescription (S4)

I dont eat berocca, it contains aspartame .just drink water and some fruitsaline.

you can definately buy anagraine OTC but only in packs of 8(s3) while the bigger packs are s4

We sell it at the pharmacy i work at (only recently though)

I use to drink my self stiff every night then wake up to go to work at 6:00 in the moring. brorocas are good but I find these medication called alka stysers (maybe not spelt like that) are better they are are a mixture of asprins and citric acids I find they work better than berroca. Although I fond them just the same as taking borroca and some asprin at the same time

Milk is great before bed.... and, if I can handle it, a slice of bread with peanut butter. For some reason, I find something in your stomach containing carbs and protein helps (sometimes it's only a cracker with 1/4 slice of cheese). A huge glass of water then a couple of panadol, hit the sack.

Another huge glass of water, a fruit juice, and a berrocca apon waking (yes that's a lot of liquids, but you need it), plus another couple of panadol in the morning. Usually does the trick for me.

Phase Dancer, could you please provide more information on your fructose post?

I'm sure I've written this before, but I can't find it so here we go again :\

From Pharmacology; Rang Dale & Ritter 4th Ed 2001,

page 627

The oxidation of 2 moles [(1mole =46.1g or roughly 46ml)] consumes about 1.5kg of the co-factor NAD+. Availability of NAD+ limits the rate of ethanol oxidation to about 10ml an hour in normal adults....

...It also leads to a competition between the ethanol and other metabolic substrates for the availability of NAD+ supplies, which may be a factor in ethanol-induced liver damage

page 628

The limitation on ethanol metabolism imposed by the limited rate of NAD+ regeneration has led to attempts to find a sobering up agent that works by regenerating NAD+ from NADH. One such agent is fructose, which is reduced by an NADH -requiring enzyme. In large doses it causes a measurable increase in the rate of ethanol metabolism, but not enough to have a useful effect in the rate of sobriety

just tell ya "mate" to give up drinking :)

Is ya "mate" lightweight? or simply got low tolerence? or simply doesn't drink enough water? "mate's" relatives heavydrinkers or lightweights?

Does the "mate" get tipsy after 3-5 glasses? how much grog she usually drinks before she reaches the "tipsy" effect?

like "dialated665" said..... "All Drug's affect everyone differently" :)

Just asking cos I have a high tolerence towards grog.....

urbanhog: yes id call her a lightweight.. does the water thing help the vomiting, coz thats wat id like to stop- otherwise she cant come out the next night!!! well she doesnt drink extraordinary amounts, pretty much enough to get drunk/tipsy without being totally fucked. Kinda hard to describe.. but dya think if she drank more slowly over longer periods that would help? or if she stopped drinking at say 2 (normally leave at 5)?? thanks so much for all the ideas, very useful :)

But in lay terms what does that mean? Should I drink some sort of fruit juice to ease the hangover?

About post on use of citric acid ...... . . . .

Those I know who claim the most benefit drink fruit juice with or alternatively with alcohol. However, IMO a good berry based smoothie the next morning is also hard to beat (try the frozen berry packs - Nature's SR range - available at your local supermarket).
