ok so im a 17 year old alcohol virgin. I just got a "half water bottle" of "rubinoff" from my friend. i have a few q's

(my stats are 6ft, 190lb)

-How much do i have to drink to take the ease off? Im not really looking to get drunk, just relax if that makes sense
-I have a 275 word speech coming up soon in school. I get nervous. REALLY, REALLY, nervous. like im not sure if i will physically be able to get all the words out, it can be that bad. I was thinking of taking a few sips in lunch before i have to give the speech? would this work? would it be obvious i was "buzzed"?

so yea just help me out please lol

I wouldnt bring alcohol to school but if you do bring mouthwash. And try not to sweat because you will smell like alcohol

Start off with 6-8 ounces, preferably in a wine glass so you feel cooler.

Sip it over 20-30 minutes and see where that leaves you.

From here you can judge if you would like more, or have had enough.

3 shots usually takes the edge off for most people.

I'd recommend experimenting outside of school. Alcohol is really detectable by its smell.

Yeah alcohol comes out in your sweat and it's a very distinctive odour. You don't want to risk teachers knowing you've been drinking. There are better drugs out there for dealing with situational nerves, but at your age they're best avoided, and so is 'medicinal' alcohol dosing, I think.

Personally I'd advise tackling the nerves head on and developing a natural way of dealing with them as you clock up experience. You're only 17, it's normal to get massively nervous in all manner of situations.

I agree with everyone else about avoiding it for your upcoming speech. Talk to your doctor about propanolol if you're having bad anxiety. It's nonaddictive (it's actually a nonselective blood pressure medication) and any doctor should be pretty willing to script you these. I've never tried it, but I've heard some pretty good things about it.

And you're a taller person, so you can probably handle more liquor than someone else who is trying it for the first time. My guess is 3 shots will have you feeling pretty tipsy. I remember when I first drank I was shitfaced off of 3 shots, but I was shorter than you

yeah and honestly, not to put you down or anything, but nobody is going to care about your school speech. Public speaking is uncomfortable for most people, and understandbly so. But if you just get up there with the realization that 40% of the audience isnt paying attention, and the other 60% is just glad they didnt have to give a public speech and could care less what you say, its a lot easier. And 250 words isnt that long man

Yeah, beta blockers will be the best choice, way better than alcohol or benzos for public speaking.

And who gives a shit if you're nervous in a high school presentation? I was nervous as hell giving speeches, and no one cared, because guess what? 90% of the class was as nervous as me up there. Don't sweat it, and even if you do, don't even trip, public speaking is what it is. No one is expected to be a charismatic, stoic public master speaker in high school, lol.

Something like 75% of doctors use beta blockers themselves before medical conferences, and most of these people aren't anxious normally. So, any doctor will give you beta blockers if you just ask for them.

^if you happen to have an article/source about that 75%, I'd be really interested to see it. I totally believe what you're saying, but I'm just curious.

I read that a long time ago from a non-peer reviewed source, I'll have to look for it when I get a chance. Regardless, my point was that doctors hand them out like candy, since they use it themselves, and since they are not abusable or addictive.

drink about a quarter of what uve got over half an hour , see how u feel then drink say a mid size sip every few minutes , being a heavy drinker i just say 4 large sips per minute and slow down as i get drunker . with the speech thing id do it for sure maybe valium or something but that could get messy , id drink like 3-4 beers before hand or 2-3 cans of bourborn but im pretty tolerant .

Yeah, honestly seeing how you're completely new to alcohol, I wouldn't use it to help you calm your nerves before a speech in school. I remember when I first started drinking, 3-5 drinks would get me 'drunk' (god I miss those days...multiply that by three now). It doesn't take much the first time you start drinking, and you don't want to be tipsy giving a speech, that'd be a lot worse than feeling nervous. And plus the smell is going to be hard to cover up, and that will just give you one more thing to worry about. Honestly, being nervous before a speech is just part of life...and before you know how alcohol effects you and what your tolerance is like, I'd stay away. Maybe give a few trial runs?

Edit:
And one more thing about people here saying beta blockers will help calm your nerves...they are right but that doesn't mean just any beta blocker. I have a friend who was taking a public speaking class in college and he also read that beta blockers (propranolol specifically) would help calm him before a speech. The kid's mother was on a high dose of propranolol, so he popped two or three of them before his speech. He ended up collapsing and having to go to the emergency room because of severe hypotension. So don't just raid your parents medicine cabinet looking for a "beta blocker" and just take them, only do it unless prescribed to you from a doctor. The doses used for nerves are much lower than what is used for high blood pressure.
