Alcohol after codeine/poppy seed tea use...

I'm going to a party tonight, which is a rarity for me, but I'm considering as to whether I should drink.
I haven't drank in about 3-4 weeks, I generally don't like it in comparison to other drugs. Unfortunately, I have to socialise with these guys whom I may barely know, and I feel as though some alcohol may be necessary to temporarily help me through my social anxieties.
However, I've taken poppy seed tea and codeine yesterday, and I'm not quite sure whether it's too safe to drink. Would anybody be able to give me some advice?

you'lll be fine mateeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

both pst and codiene have a relatively short half life. I dont know the exact figure on the top of my head right now. but yeah having em the day be4 then having some booze the next time would be A-OK to do so :)

3-4 hours half life on codeine from memory. dunno about morphine and whatnot in pst...

You'll be fine. Protip: Don't drink whilst you are feeling high, or drink lightly if you must.

yeah, you should be fine. pst has a long half-life, but if it's like 24 hours since you consumed it, you should be fine.

i found that since i started using opiates (even recreationally) i lost that 'magic' (or whatever you call the mild pre-drunk buzz from a drink or two) associated with alcohol. if you don't get off on it, don't sweat it.
i usually take other things as a 'social lubricant' these days, but that's another story altogether.

you'll be fine to drink some alcohol tonight :)

Whats the concern?

I always have a couple drinks with codeine/pst/whatever. What exactly are you worried about?

Sorry to sound like I a have an attitude there... but Im generally curious :)

If by "codeine" you mean a CWE done on paracetamol/codeine tablets, then mixing with alcohol will significantly increase the damage done to the liver. So it takes less alcohol to feel sick and get a hang over. I find that alcohol hits me harder when I have had about 1g of paracetamol. Paracetamol is also more toxic when taken the day following alcohol consumption or for alcoholics in general because alcohol causes the liver to increase production of a specific enzyme system (an enzyme complex called P-450) which is a part of the biochemical detoxification process alcohol, paracetamol and other drugs undergo in the liver. The subsequent increase in the amount of P-450 increases the speed at which paracetamol it metabolised which actually greatly increases the toxicity of paracetamol. *paracetamol it self is not toxic it is its toxic metabolite (N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine NAPQI, or NABQI) produced in the liver by the interaction of paracetamol and P-450 enzyme complex. Yeah, so para+alcohol can make for a shitty night in the short term and bad health in the long term. EDIT: This is going to be much less of a problem for you Nozphexezora because it has been about a day since you dosed but I will include it for harm minimization purposes

I suppose the only other concerns are the increased level of sedation and the increased level of respiratory depression opiates and alcohol cause in combination, always good to keep in mind because you never can be too careful. Of course, overdose is less likely with a mug of PST than it is with a shot of smack.Again, this doesn't really apply to you because it has been around a day since you dosed the opiates but I will include it for harm minimization purposes.

Actually, I will add one more risk to opiates in-general in a social setting. When I first started using opiates to ease feelings of social anxiety and increase enjoyment at social gatherings, I think I was a little bit too naively comfortable with others knowing I was on opiates for the get together in stead of/as well as the socially acceptable alcohol, pot and stimulants. Obviously this is a generalisation and some people you know may be truly cool with it but many people, even people who believe they have an open mind about drugs are often quite deeply affected by the demonised image of the low life junky that they cannot help but look at you differently the second they get the idea that you're a recreational opiate user. This can be a real problem at gatherings with guests from work or people somehow known to you through the way you make your living. To the true believers, junkies have a disgusting, shameful, hellish existences, they are constantly in the grip of desperation and are known to steal from friends and family, many of them would walk over there dying mothers for a fix etc. The idea sounds like a ridiculous fantasy, too stupid to be real in the minds of those most important and influential to you. But the truth is that you're likely to encounter people of significance to your life who have this idea deeply woven into who they are. Even if they know you well enough and believe that you'd never lie, beg, cheat or steal for a fix, they will always think of you as the person they know who used opiates recreationally but was somehow strong enough not to turn bad. That's bad for business and all kinds of shit. I don't want to over dramatise but this actually happened to me in my early twenties and I thought it might benefit someone to read it.

mixing both increases the risk of OD/respiratory problems as Sonny Jim has mentioned.

in my early days of using i once had a good dose of PST (back before seeds seemed to ever be washed) and then went to a gig and drank 6 or 7 pints of beer.
i was violently, violently ill for two days following. i can't stress enough how much you shouldn't ever mix alcohol and opiates - even 'weak' ones.
sure, some people might be able to get away without anything going wrong - but from my own experience, as well as any sound HR perspective, the two should not be combined.
it was a "never again" proposition for me - i was never tempted to repeat it.
you may not have had the same reaction, but i've been careful ever since to never give a cup of pod tea to anyone that has been drinking. it is also worth mentioning that the effects of the two drugs negate each other - i never really got drunk when i was throwing them back on PST, so i continued to drink. not a safe combination.

I always drink on and after opiates, seriously I don't think its dangerous at all to drink after your dose has worn off (drinking on opies is another story and should be avoided), you should be fine. PST does last a while though and there is a chance you may experience some nausea but other than that I would not be concerned.

Best thing is to drink slowly and listen to your body. If you feel more affected/uncoordinated after a drink or two than you usually would, you should probably slow down or stop for a while.

Great point that Sonny Jim made about people's perception of opiate users. Better to keep it to yourself, for a few reasons. If I'm at a gathering with "mainstream" people and I'm on MXE/heroin/clonazepam or whatever but not actually drinking alcohol like everyone else, and someone comments that I seem affected (I'm wobbling into the furniture or saying random things etc), I'll just say that I smoked a joint earlier. A lot of people who aren't interested in drugs have no idea about the affects of different things anyway.

Thankyou for the advice guys, I appreciate it. As spacejunk said, I just used alcohol as a social 'lubricant'. Anyway, the party was fun - but somebody from my work who has never drank before kept asking me if he was drunk and at one point I got in the car to play some Sgt Pepper's, and he started fist pumping to it. He had a bottle of cider...

Also, I can understand what you mean Sonny. I tend not to tell people about my opiate use, fortunately I feel comfortable saying it on here.

Yeah this is kinda what I was getting at.
