I am prescribed 10mg Adderall XR and was taking 1 in the morning and occasionally 1 around noon. After a number of months, I notice back pain with increasing severity upon awakening. Over time it became so severe I became very concerned and began trying to determine what was going on. Then it began to migrate to my right hip which also increased in severity upon awakening. It was so painful it was difficult to get out of bed. It was a 9 on scale of 10 sometimes. But it did vary and move around. Upon getting out of bed, the pain dropped to moderate after about an hour and breakfast which always included a glass of OJ. I was also on a diuretic for blood pressure. I did awake occasionally and once took my blood pressure and it was very low for me. 110/60.

I'm on amlodipine, lisinopril and the diuretic and my typical morning blood pressure is above 130/80 after the blood pressure meds. I stopped the diuretic and it didn't help. I stopped the Adderall and it eventually went away. Becuase my doctors is fairly conservative, I wanted to have it looked into before explaining the Adderall XR part. I had no RA, or any kind of arthritis or easy explanation. So I was fairly sure the Adderall was setiing this in motion but why. Without the dderall, I'm a basket case so if I can find solution, its highly desirable. My doctor tried me on prednisone and that stopped the pain altogether in 2 days. So shutting down my immune response did stop the pain. But taking prednisone all the time is not an option, just evidence. No blood tests showed anything odd. My K has always been a bit high like 300 but it had not increased due to this.

So I wondered if the problem was vascular in some way. Maybe my blood vessels were constricting or in spasm, shutting the O2 supply to the major muscles while I slept. Maybe that was causing damage and when I awoke, that stopped and the pain slowly cleared. So then I began looking on forums after having no luck on medical or research sites which are too vague. Many people seemed to complain of a variety of myalgias especially in the lower back but I didn't see the hips or the migration pattern. Many reported Adderall can cause dehydration so drink lots of water or Gatorade. Others talked about taking magnesium. I do avoid water after dinner so I don't have to awake for a bathroom trip so the diuretic plus dehydration due to low water intake seems viable.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to possible mechanisms and dangers as I've stopped the Adderall XR for now. Has anyone seen this lower back to hips to thighs migration each morning. Could my morning large OJ be re-hydrating me and causing the pain to decline quickly? It does continue all day but to a much lesser degree all day after a while. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Adderall causes vasoconstriction. For me this causes headaches. If I take too much-which I am prescribed to take extra for example if working a long day, I too get these myalgias. I use motrin and do extra stretching and use liberal mounts of Tiger Balm and that fixes it. You need to get your circulation going. Stretching and good walk should help. Hydration is a great idea along with a multivitamin. Magnesium wouldn't hurt along with calcium and some extra vitamin D. Many people are deficient in Vitamin D and don't know it and this can cause bone pain. Take 2,000 units of D3 daily.
