I am going to the doctor tomarrow and i was wondering what options I have. I have been sufferring from anxiety and depression. I take 150mgs of effexor XR in the morning and i have been also taking Xanax .5mgs 3 times daily, I know that my doctor is not going to write me another script for Xanax, he thinks i have been on it for long enough, he stress the fact that Xanax is better for short term anxiety rather then long term, so i am wondering what other benzo's work well for for anxiety, that are more geared toward medium-long acting range?? i feel that the Effexor XR is working great for the depression but the anxiety is still there, and i have already had an increase in the effexor and Xanax.. I like the effect that benzos have on my body, that calming effect really helps me!!!!!! I am also having alot of trouble getting to, and staying asleep!!! If anyone has had simular problems, or has any advice on benzo's PLEASE HELP!! THANX Mike

you might get better answers to this inquiry in Med Q & A, but anyway...
when your doctor says that xanax is better for treating short-term anxiety problems, he is talking about the whole class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. A longer-acting benzo like Klonopin is stll a short-term solution for anxiety--good for occasional panic attacks, sudden bouts of anxiety, but not generalized anxiety disorder or constant anxiety, which it sounds like you have.
So I doubt he is going to prescribe you another benzo if he feels you have been on xanax too long. How long have you been on it? You're really not taking that much, but benzos really aren't designed for daily continuous use. Physical dependance to these drugs is a real bitch to kick (trust me).
SNRI's like Effexor tend to have an aggravating effect on people with anxiety problems, so I don't know if it's the best med to treat your depression. Paxil seems like the popular choice to treat people with generalized anxiety disorder and depression, but there are other meds like Serzone that are geared towards treating the anxiety exclusively.
You're probably looking at a separate anxiolytic med (not a benzo) to treat your anxiety, if your intentions are to stay on Effexor. For sleep you can ask your doctor about Imovane (zopiclone) or Sonata (can't remember generic), this shit will knock you out but again it's not for every night use.
Like I said though, if your doctor feels like you've been on Xanax too long, you're not likely to get another benzo, and if you do, be careful with continous daily use.

I will move this to medical... but it sounnds like you might actually want RELIEF and not a high, if this is the case, WORK WITH YOUR DOCTOR ...
You could hint for Klonopin, as you're taking the Effexor, and it *IS* common to script a benzo to go along with that (for the anxiety) ..
Just go in, and see what you can get... if you ARE aferthe Xanax, then simly maintain that the Xanax has "given you your life back" or some such crap.. when you approach a doctor with a medicine that DOES WORK and you don't exhibit negetive side effects, your chances are better that you will get more - still, it sounds like your doc isn't to found of the meds, so live the the now!

I've had to talk my way out of losing my script for ritalin at least a few times in the past 7 years I've been on it. The "I got my life back" works.A few times. Then there is always "Every time I think about losing it, my heart rate goes up, and I get this irrational fearof...something."But that usually only works if youre under care of a therapist. Next, more long-term one is that you do lose the xanax for a month, then come back and give him the same symptoms you had prior to the attack.
Dunno though. Paxil you might want to avoid. From what I've heard the withdrawl period is one of the worst for any SSRI/Mood Stabilzer/Etc. Since like the effexor (or any antidepresent be it SSRI, SNRI, bupropin(wellbutrin), trycyclics, or that other older class I can't recall...) needs to build up a certain amoutn of micrograms per unit of blood (not sure on specifics.) is in the category, you gotta ease yourself off the shit. I've seen people go full-blown, puke all day, headaches and fulu like symptoms from Paxil withdrawl after they end the medication. Thats why I said no to it long time ago. If I wanted to puke, I'd eat DXM.

Are you seeing a standard Medical Doctor, like internal medicine or something? Or are you seeing a Psychiatrist? If number2, it's actually easier to keep the meds coming. Mecdical docctors w/ no psychiatric background often are less leinent (in my experience) about continuing medication.
You could go to something like what we have around here, a "RediMed". Ghetto chains of walk-in clinics that accept almost any insurance. You walk in, say your neck hurts, you get a large, refillable script of Vicodin or similar products. I've done it a few times for work-related injuries. They have other service charges for shit (i think they even charged a fee for writing out a perscription, it's been a while). But that could work if you say"my last doctor perscribed this, but I've moved and now come here as it's closer and I don't have a car" etc. I know someone who did that to keep the Dexedrine after he stoped using Prozac.

GUYs i really appreciate all of your Great advice!!!!! THanX MIKE
