One-hitters are far and away my favorite weed paraphernalia. They can't be beat if you're a thrifty, usually non-social smoker who gets an intrinsic thrill from sneaking a toke.
There are really only two major downsides to oneys, that I've noticed. First, they need to be cleaned very frequently. Tar accumulates so thickly on them that within a week of daily smoking, the diameter of the pipe is severely reduced, and consequently the quality of the high, too.
Secondly, it's hard to attain just the right amount of suction to burn the weed efficiently, WITHOUT pulling a burning ember of it through. Many times has the back of my throat been scorched by one of these. This manifests the next day or two as a sore throat -- far and away my least favorite part of a cold, and often tricking me into thinking I'm actually coming down with one. Those embers are carcinogenic, too!
Recently I bought some wire screens, cut them into quarters, and experimented loading my oney with them. The most noticeable difference is in the high itself -- I feel less 'polluted' by the smoke and other noxious compounds. The high feels cleaner, somehow. (Placebo?)
But on the downside, one quarter-screen only lasts me one, maybe two, tokes, before it obstructs airflow through the pipe and makes it not too fun or efficient to smoke through. So I need to change it frequently.
Has anyone else tried this? After smoking a one-hitter both with, and without, a screen for long periods of time, what's your verdict? Worth the extra trouble or not?
