A PLEA: can we discuss and debate without insults and abuse?

I'm not sure if this is possible? Generally people get so impassioned about politics or about debating or arguing, that they wind up attacking, flaming/trolling, and insulting people who have opinions other than their own.
not possible? it's quite possible - people just have to choose to not do it. i am inviting people to make that choice.

It's not always the people who post here on CE&P who are right-wing, conservative, or moderate who wind up doing this most of the time either.
if i didn't think people on both 'sides' were doing it, i would not have written this:

i'm not going to point fingers or call people out because it's happening across the board. some people are worse than others but people on both 'sides' of the spectrum are guilty.

alasdair

More specifically: are people still allowed to call others Nazis?
Will they be warned and threatened with being banned if they continue with this insult?

7. TAKE IT EASY - Don't take shit too seriously. While it's good to be passionate about what you believe, in CE&P no one knows your real name, knows what you look like (unless you post in the nudie threads in The Lounge), and chances are you'll never physically meet (trying to keep the murder statistics down, y'know?).

So if you find yourself getting too upset or overly emotional about someone's response to your post--sit back, relax, and remember that it's probably a better thing to make your mark in real life than in here. Just don't become one of our news stories

From the guidelines.

Chillax guys

I am with the OP 100%! Insulting those with whom one disagrees isn't just rude, it's counterproductive! I was a mod for an AV site that did not tolerate rudeness; if a post was insulting the poster was warned...ONCE.
Although we may be here for different reasons (I'm in pain mgt and looking for information on new meds) and have different views on politics, I see no reason a discussion must devolve to insults...no one is helped by this, and it could potentially "turn off" someone looking for harm reducing (life saving?) info.

The "both sides" thing is part of the problem. One side are fascist nazi bigots and the other side are calling this out and meeting violence with violence (anti-fa, BLM, anarchists, or as I call them true patriots) Somehow it only matters that counter protestors use violence when the entire narrative of the Nazis is violent. We have several people on this forum who state that white people are superior and should stick to their own kind that mixing of races is white genocide, whatever. They are fucking scum who deserve to be punched in the face and I will take any ban or points or whatever to state this.

This forum isnt just about politics. Its about current events as well and the things going on right now are dominated by racial tension . Apparently that demonstration by white nationalists was legal and they had right to have their rally whatever .

So what is the difference here?

I think that stance is disgusting personally but wouldnt it be better to have some type of decent debate than just quash it?

Theres some very silly leftist stances too tbh.

I don't think anyone wants to squash anything.

I think the problem is is that certain members can't help from repeatedly insulting others. Moreover, when people try to engage them in debate/discussion they twist meanings, take things out of context, cherry pick, and straight up lie. There are plenty of examples which have been quoted of these exchanges.

The same people then accuse people who disagree with them of doing what they are doing. When asked to provide an example or proof they usually go silent. The same thing happens when someone asks them to provide sources backing up their ideas/points/arguments.

Most people come here to discuss and debate, but when these intellectually dishonest tactics come into play the discussion goes off topic and people get pissed. That is why it shouldn't be too much to ask for a little mutual respect and to cease with name calling. Bluelight has the lounge, and when people wanna just fuck around that is the place to do it. Trolling members who put time and thought into posts by being a dick isn't really what CEP has ever been about. This same thing happens every few years, and the mods end up having to crack down on really immature bullshit.

^ Yeah a few posters stand out as they do obviously use personal attacks but a larger percentage can be pretty critical of other perspectives and rather patronising. One would tend to feed the other.

While its great there are posters here who can spend a lot of time and put a lot of effort into their posts, Id hazard a guess that there are other posters who come here to get some input about world events they dont really know about and dont pretend they ever did. People like that include myself and As far as Im aware thats perfectly fine and something youll just have to accept.

Your opinions are important, and even if we disagree on something I respect your point of view.

I don't respect right-wing propaganda and hit-pieces being pushed on people as if they were facts.

I don't respect someone who rehashes the same bullshit over and over again and floods half of the current threads with it.

I don't respect people who knowingly spread misinformation and lies.

Rational people have experienced this crap before in the form of climate change denial. No matter how much data was presented the other party would never acknowledge or even consider it to be a possibility. I see multiple parallels in the current political atmosphere. Please don't feel like you, or people here for a similar reason are being targeted in any way.

I change my opinions/outlook due to new, cooborated input whenever I have the privilege to do so.

I look forward to you calling me, and anyone else, out in a civilized manner if you ever feel it warranted :)

P.S. I know I probably sound like a patronizing asshole, but I really can't help it. This is how I am for better or worse :\

Thanks for posting this Ali. I think its something we can all work towards. I know that I've certainly been a sarcastic asshole to people here, an certainly plan to be less of an asshole at least. ;)

Where does politely informing someone that they are a useful idiot enabler of neo-fascists fall? Lol. Sorry.

But yeah, it's important to remember that calling someone an idiot doesn't persuade them to your argument, but rather has the opposite effect. If concord is the goal of discourse then it should follow that attacks should be left out.

Maybe a separate thread dedicated to personal attacks? A place to vent would be healthy...

^I don't think such a thread would be at all useful.

If people want to flesh out their personality clashes, PMs are the way to go.

What about having a yearly purge, 1 day a year where the Bluelight rules go out the window and chaos rules. Nazi's insult pedophiles, Muslims insult Christians, cocaine users insult psychedelic users, spammers sell viagra openly in the sober living thread. Basically a free for all, then the next day the rules are reinstated and we go about peacefully debating topics in a constructive fashion
