The bathtub was full. Steam was drifting away from the surface of the water with grace. Three candles were lit on the side of the sink, and their glow made shapes that danced on the ceiling. Music was playing softly in the background. Once everything was in place, she untied her robe and dropped it to the ground. Slowly, one toe at a time, she eased her way into the tub, sliding down as the water sloshed over her soft skin. The warmth from the water felt good against her cold skin, and the smell of roses from the candles made her feel relaxed. She lay letting the atmosphere of the room envelope her as she tried not to think of everything. A tear rolled down her face and she closed her eyes. As she lay, her body sucked up the heat from the water, and soon the tub was cooling off. She didn’t notice or care. The candles burnt out and the room was now dark and cold. All that was left was the music never ceasing to play its melancholy tunes. Yet she lay, silent, still. Her husband came home, but she didn’t yell to greet him. He came and knocked, but she didn’t answer, so he opened the door and turned on the light. He looked and saw his wife lying in a tub of red water. The water was so red and she was so white. She looked like an angel, so delicate and heavenly. She looked so peaceful. He still stood, looking all over for a sign that this was fake. Then he saw her hand propped up on the side of the bath. It was holding a razor. He glanced further down and saw her wrist was wide open. Suddenly it hit him this was real. A horrified sound slipped from his throat and he ran over to her lifeless body. He grabbed her arm and held her wrist with all his might, trying to hold her blood in and bring her back to life. But there was no blood left in her body, it was now all in the water, staining the sides of the tub. Tears poured from his eyes and he lifted her, wrapping his arms around her wet, withering body. He hugged her and rocked back and forth mumbling and crying, begging her to come back, not to leave him alone, promising to be a better husband, that he would never forget her birthday or anniversary again if she would just come back. But none of these words would bring her back, she was gone now forever. He just kept whispering ‘please’ over and over while crying and holding her, refusing to let go. In the background, the radio still played its haunting melody.
