He just said...

“The transgender thing is incredible. Think of it. Your kid goes to school and comes home a few days later with an operation."

But, Harris had a southern accent in a speech.

I talk like Reverend Jesse Jackson when I go to the DMV, it's called code switching, it's normal

...Whenever I visit my family in Texas I start subconsiously speaking with a drawl...
...It's not purposeful, as a matter of fact I resisted it. But, you will eventually pick up the speech patterns of those you are with....
yep....in the absence or meaningful criticism.
I'm just guessing, but hasn't Kamala lived in California or DC for the vast majority of her life at this point?
Keep in mind she attended Howard for her undergraduate degree and I would contend that ages 18 to 22 are still formative years.
And when one has hung out with all kinds of people from all over the country (and world), one becomes even more fluid in one's speech patterns. I know that's how I am.

I always chuckle when I think about a bartender I knew in Gatlinburg. When you get up in the more mountainous areas of Appalachia, you hear more "you'uns" than you do "y'all." This guy was from New Jersey but he'd been in G'burg a few years, so his accent was an odd mix. He was fond of saying "youse-uns."

I think it's one of our baser survival mechanisms as humans. As apes, if we did not adapt to the mannerisms or community of the tribe, we died.

I have noticed my speech adapt to numerous groups. That's just human nature.

I'd imagine those who cannot adapt well probably reproduce less...

yep - it's basically a weird, jessie watters fox talking point that's being parroted in the absence or meaningful criticism.

alasdair

For me at least, it is not a replacement for meaningful criticism. Simply an observation. At worst, pandering, which all politicians are guilty of to varying degrees.

I haven't seen anyone here trying to compare interesting/comical speech patterns to policy matters or anything else. But I do find it kind of interesting how defensive people get over stuff like this. I thought we'd moved past the point where we have to play sides so strongly? But perhaps not.

don't take a shit on the constitution.

The Trump quote/graphic was in response to ions.

Right, I'm not sure how analogous that is to a career politician getting off a plane, walking into a building to give a speech in one dialect. Getting back on the plane, giving the same speech a few days later in a completely different dialect. It's not like she was embedded in these areas for weeks or months and some kind of linguistic phenomenon occurred. It's basically the same speech she's been giving for weeks. I think any dialect changes within that time span are obviously deliberate. Especially for a person who makes a living doing public speaking.

sure. but when you call out harris for it when your guy is the king of it, it starts to lose a lot of its weight.

I guess I'm just confused as to why this is in any way relevant.
OK, let's say she deliberately changes her dialect. I suppose that could be construed as being misleading or manipulative, whereas her opponent exemplifies honesty, integrity, and emotional maturity?

Nope. I never said he did.

It's relevant because if we are ever going to get back to a place where our society expects more from our elected leaders, stuff like this still needs to be called out.

I don't like the idea that the candidate who we are supposed to be looking to as a real leader should be engaging in this type of behavior. Should we lower the standard because of Trump? I don't think we should.

I don't like that she changes her accent based on the demographic she is speaking to. I didn't like it when Hilliary did it either. She obviously thinks we're pretty gullible. And yes, it's manipulation. Is that okay, or not okay? Only answers that don't include "but Trump!", please....
