2024 US Presidential Election

DeSantis is probably a better bet for Republicans (and the people who support their policies). Trump inspires a lot of love but a lot of hate too...for every die-hard Trump fan there is at least one die-hard Trump hater (no other president in my lifetime inspires the level of hate he inspires IMO). DeSantis on the other hand...Democrats don't like him but he doesn't animate them like Trump did. Independents are willing to give him a hearing I would think, hell they'd probably be very sympathetic depending on how bad things were going

Furthermore, as far as policies go, a DeSantis administration would be basically indistinguishable from a Trump administration IMO, with the possible exception of foreign policy. Trump's antiestablishment cred is mostly relegated to his rhetorical style...as far as his actual policies went, it was a pretty typical Republican administration, I think it could be argued (again, with the possible exception of foreign policy). I thought late in 2016/early 2017, that Trump may have taken things in a more populist direction in regards to the economy, like he may have courted working people more with an infrastructure package or something along those lines...I remember thinking that when he visited those workers at Carrier early in his presidency.

He never really took it in that direction though.

I don't know why lefties would support DeSantis eclipsing Trump, as DeSantis represents a greater threat to them long-term than Trump does. Trump really irritates them to no end but his threatening nature is limited by the intense opposition to him (it's important to keep in mind how much the element of surprise aided him during his 2016 win) and his own narcissism and sloth. DeSantis is gonna do all the same shit Trump did but (probably, no way to know for sure at this point) would be more effective at it.

Those are my thoughts anyway

Okay
I'll vote for pat paulsen again
Fine. Vote for whoever.

The "it doesn't matter" attitude really rubs me the wrong way. I lived thru the 60s when people were jailed, beaten, and killed for trying to vote.
To be so proud of one's apathy is disgusting.
It's like when it was a crime to teach slaves to read. One could argue "Readin' ain't gonna do em no good anyways"...

So, what? Fuck it? Give up?

If that's how you feel then go kill yourself.

So everyone here thinks desantis is better then youngkin ?

idk enough about him to make that call yet - all i know is that he's not Italian like DeSantis is

People forget about one major detail. You can’t do what trump did if you aren’t independently wealthy. Desantis is the establishments guy bc they know they can control him. It’s a sad fact, trump has had to take on endless kangaroo courts, frivolous lawsuits, subverted government officials and agency attacks, etc etc. They even unconstitutionally forced him to reveal his tax returns, which was ultimately a bust for the establishment since it showed he took major losses while president. Desantis could be the best politician on the planet, and want to fight the good fight, but he’s powerless without wealth.

I honestly feel the level of hate towards trump is completly unwarranted, yea the guys a internet troll, so what
He was a threat to the establishment, they essentially got cocky and didn’t cheat enough, he wins, and they will never let him live it down. They have employed every propaganda arm of the public and private industry, concocted wild conspiracies implicating him, and are obviously very cozy with big tech which helped their campaign greatly. I’d say there is a core 30% of people in the population that are just complete and total lemmings that will hyper react to these types of propaganda campaigns. And that’s more than enough to create consensus when you control the media. In reality most people liked trumps policies and the strength of the economy, but the moderates were sick of hearing about him, and I can’t blame them. But we have to get used to this, anyone that comes up in the future that poses a threat to these people will get the exact same treatment.

And that’s just it, anybody who goes against the narrative will get what will be coined “the trump treatment”

I'll admit that I really dslike Trump and find him repulsive as a person, but that's not why I think he was a bad president. It will become clear in the history books the damage he did to America. If you can't see it now, it's either because you have an agenda, or are blinded by the partisan rhetoric. His policies were basically Republican party line, and not so bad, or not any worse than other Republicans anyway. It's what he did outside of strictly his policies that's bad. Undermining trust in the elections system (despite Republican election officials across the country risking death threats and some needing to be entered into witness protection, to speak out and say that in fact we should be trusting the election system - but I know you guys are gonna blow that off and say it was stolen. That's because that's how effective he was at it), massively inflaming the existing divisions between the people more than any other political figure in our time or maybe ever, and empowering a new generation of TrumpPublicans to use the same playbook. He changed the face of American politics in one 4 year term, and the ramifications of that are just starting to play out but will be felt for a long time. I honestly don't know if we're going to recover from it. He didn't cause the division that he enflamed, but we are weaker and more fragile as a country because of him. We needed a leader who was going to try to help heal us, instead we got a grifter who played at President and purposely stoked the flames in order to stroke his own ego.

Would Hillary have helped heal us? Surely not. It was giant douche vs Turd Sandwich. But that doesn't negate his responsibility nor the damage he managed to do.

Probably no point replying, I know more than half of you are going to tell me I'm wrong for this or that reason. But 20, 30, 50 years down the line, it will be clear to everyone. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think so.

I wanted an antiestablishment president too, but what we got was worse than the prior status quo.
