Not quite bluegrass in the traditional sense. Probably closer to Old Time both in the song they played and the way he played the banjo. That and no breaks or solos as bluegrassers like to do. Although I have seen the banjo picker play both 3 finger/scruggs style and clawhammer in the same song.

First full song on album the Pizza Tapes. I tried to attach the whole album but the site wouldn't let me. I recommend listening to entire album, appetizers and all.

Jerry Garcia - guitar, vocals
David Grisman - mandolin
Tony Rice - guitar

Bill Monroe (1911-1996) was an American mandolinist, singer, and songwriter, who created the style of music known as bluegrass. Because of this, he is often called the "Father of Bluegrass." The genre takes its name from his band the Blue Grass Boys, named for the Kentucky bluegrass of Monroe's home state. Monroe's career spanned 69 years as a singer, instrumentalist, composer and bandleader.

Just like an old friend
Kinder than expected
That Cadillac came and gave our girl a ride
Loss has no end
It binds to our connection
And we don’t speak of it, we don’t even try

If you could help me to share the trouble
that you’ve got burning in you, then you can help me
And in our time together
Her memory will ever shine like golden embers in the night

I miss the old hymns
when she used to sing
The sparrows spread their mortal wings
Now they’ve all lighted
with the silence of strings
Like notes on the pages, she breathed life into all things

If you could help me to share the trouble
that you’ve got burning in you, then you can help me
And in our time together
Her memory will ever shine like golden embers in the night

Just like an old friend
Reach out to me
Bathe me in the light of understanding
And try to help me to share the trouble
that you’ve got burning in you, then you can help me
And in our time together
Her memory will ever shine like golden embers in the night
