Why might enlightenment be rare?

I'd say actually the reason is simple -- it's a radical turning-around of one's life, and people are basically too complacent. There's too much to lose, or so it looks from a perspective based on loss and gain.

IME, the only one(s) who get enlightened, are those who are no longer able to remain unenlightened. I mean that literally -- no longer able.

One comes to a sort of inner decision, from which there is no turning back. The decision itself could be called enlightenment, because there is no turning back.

It's hard to boil down the decision to words, but perhaps this sort of suggests it:

"There is no help for me out there -- none".

One takes a step on one's own, then another, then another, then keeps walking. The "dark night of the soul" becomes an endless journey of discovery and adventure.

Peace...

Relativity: the majority will be the mundane and the few the enlightened because we define 'enlightened' as a novel & exclusive condition. No matter how insightful the whole human race gets, the exceptions of an even higher sublimated consciousness will be the ones to don the label of 'enlightened'

EDIT: To be clear, this doesn't matter if the difference is construed as needing be qualitative or quantitative.

... so true DB, the thought leaves me - mesmerized and dizzy - something

i have a massive response to this, but, honestly dont feel i should go diving
into all that at this time - its true though, what ever you want to call it. ive had some hefty PTSD, and IME with that, felt i should consider if i was construding such experiences in a form of self defense/distraction.

but, no.
the shadow of God is light, and with that in your life even your most darkest thoughts and hours will provide the warmth of this love - it can become hard to deny, like it or not!

we are indeed a vulnerable species, and it seems until we realize that, really come to know this with no room for doubt or much of a chance for any denial - we will continue to be unwitting sheep being herded by the wolves.

what might ones enlightenment be worth to others?

IME and fwiw, resistance and grasping can be seen in people's words. Lack of resistance and grasping can't -- it's like proving a negative. One can tell if someone grasps with the mind more than oneself, but not if someone is more aware or insightful or less grasping.

Makes it damn hard to know what words to trust, and keeps "enlightenment" a mystery. IME, the solution to that is to look for one's own insight in the words of others, not theirs. Personalities begin with Jerry Springer and end with Romeo and Juliet... fun aplenty but not much depth, eh?

I like that :)

I bookmarked a link to some Q&A on the two Dark Nights of the Soul ages ago that might be of interest to some here, especially those who are going through it. - http://www.lovebliss.eu/Satsangs/11_Dark_Night_of_Soul.htm

Maybe people don't become enlightened because they take enlightenment so seriously. A quest from here to there that never ends. A good way to pass the time though!

What does mean exactly I figureD callin religion BS was the firs

Or that all religions try to describe the same. But the problem is, you can't put it in words. To really understand, you have to experience it yourself. You will know if you experience "it". It is something that happens and the rest is self explanatory. If I had to describe it in words I would say it is remembering, it is understanding. Sure it chages the life. You can't go back or forget it. It is the fundament of existence.

Why it's hard? I think we have the fear of non-existance. The fear of death. As you said, there is noone to help you. Noone to hold your hand. Maybe someone you trust can look for your "body", that could give you some thinking of safeness. It is not easy to overcome this fear. If you overcome it you can make the steps and everything will work on it's own. There is just one question left: Does responsibility come through knowledge? My life changed totally from one day to another. Simple things like not eating meat, helping the poor, helping people to start thinking on their own, making steps to a better world for all. Using all the energy which you used for greed, hate, jealousy etc for more empathy.
It was worth it. Life has an other meaning now. Life is more enjoyable. I enjoy every little milisecond.

I was a "ghetto n*ger" and became a hippie/philosophist/religious/whatever you want to call it. All I know is: I became a better person.
