I'll be bashing kangaroo's and quaffing fosters in the land downunder...

But no seriously happy America day.

Yeah I was on 200mg XR and 600mg IR a day of seroquel. Basically it put me into a vortex of feelingless being with a severe loss of cognitive function...

Good to be off. I enjoy being hypomanic.

I was just commenting that when it comes up around here the consensus is usually that the doctors are stupid or misinformed when really I think the issues stem from them thinking that about us.

I totally agree with that, if you can actualy get into a conversation with a doctor and show that you have done your research and do know a bit or two then they usually stop trying to dumb things down and talk more on the same level, although some doctors genuinely are oblivious.

I think there are just several types of doctors - bad ones who don't give a shit, ones who care but aren't that well informed, and good ones who do actually know their stuff.. and ones who are have excellent knowledge and doctoring skills but are crap at communitcation!

Gotta remember, theres a lot of misinformation on the net and BLers as a group tend to be the sort of people who can do proper research and sort out the real info from the complete bollocks. Doctors have to deal with everyone, all ranges of intelligence and interest in medication/drugs and I think its just easier to advise everyone not to look on the net, and to explain things in a seemingly over simplified or not technically correct way so they can get the message across. Not saying its right at all, but we BLers as a group are a little more clued up than a lot of their patients will be!

The other thing I have noticed is that one person thinks drug x is shockingly awful where as thy get on with drug y. Another person hated the side effects from drug y but found drug z much better. A third person found drug z completely ineffective but had good results from drug x. This is especially true with psychiatric meds..

If you've got a good doc, I reckon just explain that you are interested in medications and pharmacology and that you'd like to have things explained properly. Also be aware that the doc probably put you on drug x cos it worked for other patients they have (and hopefully there is good quality research backing up its efficacy etc) but if it doesn't work for you tell them and hopefully they will try something else.

Of course I don't know how much the financial aspect affects things in America, it's not something that has an impact on prescribing here unless a drug is too expensive to be licensed for use..

But yeah, there are some shit doctors out there and I'm sorry so many people have had bad experiences..

Anyway! How is everyone today? I'm hot and sleepy, got loads to do but might just lounge about instead...

Do you guys have like a "criminal-descendent independence day" in oz? If so, when is it? :)

I feel for you man, it's so hard to find the right balance of treatments to address the negative symptoms you experience without totally eliminating the positive symptoms such as feeling that nice hypomania and such. It's just such a crapshoot.

If you don't mind me asking, what're your diagnoses? I'm studying psychology and addiction counseling so consider it academic/professional curiosity rather than just nosiness!

We have Australia day on the 26th of January which is a celebration of the raising of the flag in 1901. Though it doesn't usually involve a great deal of fireworks. More heavy heavy alcoholism and wogs fighting aussies over the Australian flag.

I believe we call the 4th of July cracker day here (fireworks), but as they are illegal in most states it's a bit shitty.

Rapid-cycling Bi-polar type II, borderline personality disorder, chronic refractory free floating anxiety, panic disorder and sleep disorder are the labels i've been given over the years.

The first two are the most relevant of course. Medication wise i'm taking 20mg escitalopram and 600mg sodium valproate these days. Though once upon a dream I was on 20mg escitalopram, 600mg sodium valproate, 1000mg seroquel, 40mg diazepam, 6mg alprazolam, 20mg temazepam daily and 15mg nitrazepam as needed.

Pretty ridiculous concoction. Was hell coming off that quantity of benzodiazepines and my usage of anti-psychotics has left me with tardive dyskinesia which I hope will fade over time.

Ooh if anyone is interested in psychology/psychiatry or has personal experience, I really recommend this book - "An Unquiet Mind" by Kay Redfield Jamison

It's written by a psychiatrist with bipolar disorder so you get to see things from both doctor and patient's perspective. Not finished it yet but so far it's amazing :D

Thanks for the recommendation. I shall have to pick that one up myself. I'm pretty obsessive about hoarding and reading those type of books. :)

I went to a musical recently which was a portrayal of a lady suffering from Bi-polar. It hit eerily close to home, especially the section about electro-convulsive therapy which they tried to force on me in the ward. Next to Normal it was called.

Allo Cane :)

I'm okay thanks - feeling the after effects of the weekend a little, planning a lazy evening! Off work for a few days so got plenty of time to chill :)

How are you?

I'm good :)

Enjoying a nice little OTC speedball of ephedrine/caffeine + kratom/kava and trying to catch up on all the super serious BL business ;)

So since you have some time off you're going to be on BL lots right?

Haha I am sure I will be, I sneak on all the time even when I'm at work :P

Maybe not so much this evening though, flat looks like a bombsite after having guests down for the weekend! Need to go and get food too, very very hungry.

Actually today's been a bit crappy for a few reasons which I won't go into here, so is nice to come and chat to some friendly internet-peeps! :)

^I can't manage to stay away from this place either, whether at school or on vacation :D

Speaking of opiates, who in their right mind would even imagine that Tramadol can even be vaguely classified as an opiate? Because it attaches to the opiate receptor? it's a pseudo opiate and if you have a dependency will cause AOWS and PAWS and you will be begging for the holy mother to come save you. I have been taking opiates NON-STOP (with a few hours inbetween) for 5 years straight. Tramadol is garbage IMO. As far as diphenhydramine, I take it to go to sleep and it works all the way up to 75mg (my usual dose). When I first started taking it I would give me the shakes something awful and restless leg syndrome. I wouldn't recommend taking it if anyone had these effects they will most likely repeat.

How can people take hundreds of milligrams of Seroquel and still function?? Even on 25 mg, I went up to go to the bathroom in the morning (huge task in itself) to take my adderall, and just felt like passing right back out in the bathroom waiting for the addy to kick in. which it obviously never did.

And I wasn't prescribed seroquel, I took one of my friend's one night cause I couldn't sleep. I am prescribed risperadone though (which I didn't take that night... wasn't sure how the two would interact), but it doesn't have much/if all of a sedative effect on me. In fact, it feels kinda like a sugar pill. I am on the lowest dosage though.

Think I am going to lay down and try and get some Serenity while watching Serenity. Might be back on a bit later, who knows, I might pass out instead, it is almost midnight here. lol.
