so they're finally gonna have a machine with a bit of grunt. enough at least to attract 3rd party developers, which is probably the only place where the wii failed.

the controller is now a weird arsed touch screen tablet, which can be used along with or even instead of a tv.

hmmmmmmm

i think this may give nintendo a chance to compare to microsoft and sony. im concerned about how damn big the controller is. looks like it could be pretty uncomfortable. all in all, im sure i wont ever buy this thing, but it seems pretty cool.
im curious as to whether they will take sony and microsofts lead on their marketing strategy and sell the console for less than the price of making it. i dont think this could be reasonably priced if they dont.

I don't think Nintendo can afford to do that unless they change their business model. Sony and Microsoft can pad losses on their systems because they are diversified; Nintendo makes video game consoles. to be honest, I think it's a miracle of ingenuity and corporate open-mindedness that Nintendo has been able to compete at all for the last 10-15 years. If it wasn't for their willingness to accept their own limitations in this battle, you'd have systems that competed with the Playstations and Xboxes on un-winnable terms. Instead, you have novel systems that are almost in a market of their own coming out of Nintendo.

Check out this unforeseen threat to Nintendo's dominance in this neat little market for consoles: Apple. Currently, the online game store for iOS is eroding market share for Nintendo and Sony's handheld consoles. The current generation iPad (2), with the new iOS 5, is able to sync wirelessly with your TV and it plays some pretty impressive games for a device that is not a gaming device. Watching the Nintendo Wii U in action is eerily similar to the current scenes one might find in your local living room with iPad 2 owners holding and moving around their devices in front of a big screen playing Need for Speed. The next generation iPad will be a direct competitor with this console IMO, whether it plans strategically to wipe out some of Nintendo's revenue or not. It will just happen, regardless of whether the next iPad's games hold a candle to Nintendo's.

It's a good thing you can't take away quality titles like the Mario and Zelda games. But the market place is more complicated now. 35-40 year old married couples are sporting Wii systems in their living rooms with no kids.

ugh i dunno man, if i can surf the web n do the same shit i can do with a tablet i think it might have a shot. the design of it is a lil weird, like a giant controller lol wont have that comfortable feelin like the xbox and ps3 controllers have.
cool cam it got on it, wonder how many megapixl it is..

Maybe it's just me, but I'm having trouble understanding how a touch-screen controller is supposed to work with a console that connects to your TV. Seems like any game that made an attempt to utilize BOTH screens to display alternate information, would end up forcing the player to constantly shift visual focus from the tiny handheld screen (right in front of player's eyeballs) to the TV (multiple feet away), which would be incredibly fatiguing after extended gameplay.

yeah i agree with you. shit if your bigscreen is like eh 3 feet from the couch it will make things hard having to do them both, yeah talk about eye strain!

thats cool that u can hook it up to any TV.. making the new gaming systems for the person thats on the go a lot.

i like how nintendo went back to the oldschool rectangle style controller deal. lol

one report i read had a demo which has the main view on the tv and the ability to look around the virtual world (turn your virtual head) with the controller, so with your character not changing in direction, a player could hold the controller over their head to see what's on the roof of the room.

Also, the controller could serve as an overhead map which would be a game changer for multi-player shooters and adventure games. On the DS, that particular function was awesome, and those games have very limited capability.

^yeah fully.

also a racing sim rear view mirror. potentially many cool applications.

that all sounds really cool.. i wonder if you can hook an external controller up to it. like the WII gun, or use it like L2R said a rear mirror or something.

A map sounds cool.. like hook a wii controller up to it?

i noticed the cam, maybe there will be a game where you can use your body and see yourself on the TV? be your own video game character. something like that old school nick show where the players would become the video game.

It's nice for co-op RPGs too so you can each do stuff with your menus (spells, inventory, etc.) and not disturb the co-op'd screen play.

Personally I never owned a PS3 or 360.. if I want a high end game I just use my computer. I like the Wii for what I have on it - Mario, MarioKart, and Donkey Kong.

nintendos business model has always involved using established tech as opposed to bleeding edge. its cheaper and usually more reliable. this looks like it could be pretty neat though and its nice to see nintendo beating everyone to the punch for a new console. im still enjoying the fuck out of my wii. i just got th zelda from 2006 and i love it even if it looks like garbage compared to my 360. of course the 360 would look like garbage too if i used the yellow video cable for it.

Yeah I still want to try out Zelda. :)

Hell I had a lot of fun spending a few bucks on Mario RPG on the nintendo store last year. Graphics aren't very important to a lot of people.

best video game ad: the recent mario kart ones (current in australia).

even though the game is now relatively old, there is nothing more effective than just showing reactions of random groups of people playing the game. there's very little gameplay shown, but the ad reminds us that video games can be just pure fun.

This is gonna fail. The whole allure of the wii was the controllers that use your own motion to control the characters. That is what set it apart from the rest. Without that, the wii/wu is just a regular console with shitty games.

...Unless Im missing something, which is very possible.

the motion controls are still there, only in one item. this time they are also far more sensitive.

There is something visceral about the Wiimote/nunchuck controller system. It feels a lot more "natural" than a traditional gamepad IMO, and it works extremely well for games like LoZ, where the Wiimote becomes your sword. The ability to point to anything on the screen like a magic wand was pretty cool too. Nintendo's definitely making a couple compromises with the new controller system.

Which is why I wonder if they'll be selling this alongside the Wii, or if they're phasing the Wii out of production for their newest console.
