So I'm wondering what you guys use for cleaning your house. General discussion is what I mostly want, plus an answer to my specific questions would be wonderful.

I mostly use vinegar for most surfaces, ammonia for tough jobs and bleach. These 3 chemicals can be pretty much used for everything.

But there are things I can't seem to get clean:
  • Like spots on my white gas stove.
  • Spots on white bathroom cabinet from dying my hair.
  • And the floor always seems to have some spots you can see in the sun and I wish I could get it to the point that its spotless. I have pergo floors.

Also for those with kids or are around kids, how do you contain the toys from taking over your house. I have a carton I keep in every room where I put them at the end of the day.

Thanks for much for help.

ammonia does cut grease big time . useful stuff . i pay a couple of women housekeepers to muck my digs out once a month. they are my friends and do a grand job of it.
it's hay and feed money as they both keep horses and that costs like crazy.

^I was coming in to say that :D

Lemon is also amazing.

I'm surprised vinegar doesn't take care of the spots on your stovetop.
Try the magic eraser and let us know what you think.
It's pretty magical :)

I was going to suggest vinegar and lemon aswell, I use them to clean everything in the kitchen and vinigar in the rinse aid in the dishwasher.

I use ~75% sulfuric acid to take off the scale things like the water tank in my commercial style coffee machine. It's hella effective and for some reason its sold at local store for like 5 bucks a liter...Gotta wear your gloves and goggles though!

i like running vinegar through the dishwasher and coffee maker, it always cleans things up.

for clothes, i like hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and Resolve.

seriously.

I've used this on everything from spilled wine in the carpet, cumstains on sheets, bloodstains on jeans, everything. So far, it has not failed me for anything.

i also really like this:

i'm from one of those households that didn't own anything stronger than laundry soap and bleach when it came to cleaning, and i'd like to stick to that as much as possible, as an adult. between this one and whatever generic super chemically one we had before, i see no difference in cleaning power between them, and this one doesn't make your house smell like an industrial plant, and is safer around kids/pets/bowls of fruit.

I am very partial to using Dettol (chloroxylenol, I think?) for mopping floors. Very safe, environmentally-friendly, yet powerful and smells nice (IMO). I also use it for disinfecting wounds.

Grease Lightening gets rid of anything that has any oily/greasy base to it. Chocolate, lipstick, and I have used it on cat puke. what i like about it is that its safe for clothes and you know when you spill something greasy on a dark or black shirt and you wash it. It leaves the stain as a dark spot. Even after you have washed and dried your garment, this stuff will get it out. I have used it to get ball point pen marks out of the carpet. Cleans the stove/oven quick and easy as well as the mesh filter on the vent above your stove. I honestly have not found anything it hasnt worked on. 1 gallon jug at home depot is like under 10 bucks.

Do you think it would work to get out a Vick's Vapor Rub stain that has gone through the dryer without ruining the shirt itself? *Crosses fingers* (Bought a new shirt, wore it once, and stupidly got Vick's all over it. 8()

^^^ i've gotten candle wax out of shirts. (with grease lightening and the help of a steamer cleaner)

I have used it on a lot of fabrics (normal ones, nothing like silk or linen) and it has never ruined any fabric. Doesn't make the color run or bleed.

Sweet. Once I try it, I'll post back if it worked to get the Vick's out. What's the worst that could happen--The shirt's already basically ruined.

I found with Vicks vapor rub (if that's the stuff your talking about) that gold old dishwashing liquid works well. Just put a bit on the mark and rub in. Just don't apply heat.

Hope it helps.

InstantNoodles, thanks for the tip but I don't want to have to buy a whole thing of dish soap for this one stain... :-/

Panders, any idea how much of that I would need? The hardware store I used to work at has a box for "store use" that I could probably take some from if it's a miniscule amount. Like, say the size of the stain is that of a quarter--Would I need a quarter-sized amount of TSP? ...Or were you just talking in general? Lol, I can see TSP eating through cotton.

the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works pretty good on tough stains.[/QU I was just gonna post that - I have no idea how they work, but they're amazing on those permanent stain rings around the burners. I like Goo Gone, too. It's not really a 'cleaning' product, but it's the only thing that gets off left behind adhesive and that sticky greasy layer that collects over your stove.

Yeah Goo Gone is the shit whip. My bf was driving my car one time and he spit his chewing gum out the window and it stuck to the side of my car. Then I kind of forgot about it for a few weeks/avoided cleaning it off cuz it was nasty, and it was in the summer so that shit baked on there pretty solid. When I finally decided to try to get it off, it wasn't able to be pulled off whatsoever, it was like straight up cemented on. I just saturated it with tons of Goo Gone and let it sit for a minute and it came RIGHT OFF. that shit is magical I swear.
