Tell us about the last film you watched, mate!

^ I need to see that film again. Watched it while majorly doped up and don't remember much of it. 8)

Emile Hirsch has been good in everything I've seen him in (Imaginary Heroes [one of my faves], The Girl Next Door, Into The Wild, ... Forget what else. :p)

Loved it.

Suspiria

it was pretty cool. definitely an example of style over substance, and it had plenty of style. reminded me of House.

had a cool approach to horror. was all about using strange sounds and images to create a feeling of tension and/or discomfort in the audience. just builds and builds on this creepy atmosphere and tension. i liked it.

^ha, i knew if anyone commented on that post and movie it was going to be you.

you have a very distinct taste in cult films.

I finally got around to watching Avatar. It wasn't as amazing as I was led to believe. The visual effects were great though. It might require a rewatch on a generous dose of psychedelics.

Dave (1993). Had it laying around, figured I may as well watch it. Not what I expected from the cover. I expected it to give Sigourney Weever a wee bit more screen time considering she's billed second. 8) And to be honest, she was the main reason I watched this film as the premise didn't sound too enthralling. Was hoping for more comedy.

3 out of 5 stars. Had some funny bits, but if you're in the mood for a movie with substance and comedy, keep looking.

I really loved this, embarassing as it may be. Some minor niggling annoyances and cringe-worthy moments but as far as this-gen animations go, this is one of the best I've seen in a while. :D

Edit: Oh I didn't see a 3D version.

The Safety of Objects. I am almost ashamed to say I have had this disc laying around for about six years now--What a great movie! Awesome cast, excellent acting. Wow! Four out of five stars.

I do need to rewatch it, however, as I missed some of the softer speaking parts and the subtitles never popped on, grr.

Repulsion

hypnotic movie about a pretty girl and her problems. i liked it. catherine deneuve sure had the right eyes for the part.

I've had a busy last few days.

The A-Team (2010)

I grew up on the tv series, so I had some expectations, but they were kinda low going into this feature length remake. I came away suitable satisfied, if not impressed, with their adherence to the original characters and way of executing a storyline. I liked their choice of actors, the plot twists, the explosions, and the not-overly-used sexy chick. Yeah, I'd recommend this for sure - to someone like me who grew up on Mr. T or to someone with no background of the A-Team. I especially loved the craziness of the airplane -> parachuting tank -> splashdown sequence. :D

Deadgirl (2008 )

I didn't know until I grabbed that image that it was from the producer of Hellraiser and Heathers, but in hindsight, that makes a lot of sense. This film wasn't real big on budget it seems, and it went with a limited number of actors and sets. That said, it was all about the story. One could write this off as a quick 'one more zombie flick', which it is to a degree. One could also enjoy it a little bit more for that fact, given the twist they took to the zombie concept

(spoiler)
NSFW:
A couple of high school outcasts find a living deadgirl in an abandoned hospital basement, and turn her into a sex slave. You've got your two main characters, one who seizes the opportunity for control and power, and the other who tries to remain 'good', with their close friendship tried to the limits with this opportunity. There is a lot of the story that progresses in ways you see coming - payback for the jock, what happens to JT (the bad friend) over time, and unfortunately the ending as well. The best ending would have been to stop when the screen went blank and let you make your own ending, I think the way the did it cheapened it a bit :\

I'd recommend this flick. Not a lot of gore, not a lot of skin (but enough...for a zombie sex slave), not great acting but good enough (especially by JT, IMO...then again, he struck me as a cross between Christian Slater and Bluelight's Griff). All in all, worth thte time, in that you never feel it's dragging, and while it isn't a tremendous up-and-down or plot twisting kinda thing, it's decent.

The Devil's Backbone (2001) El espinazo del diablo (original title)
Directed and co-written by Guillermo del Toro

Set in Spain during their war around 1920, the film drew me in for a few reasons. A ghost story of sorts, my appreciation for watching a film in a foreign language (Spanish), and the quality of the production. Not a huge budget, but enough - as their spend on a few explosions and the 'ghost' special effects were not over the top nor cheesy. Well done. The acting, and character storylines were enough to draw you in, and kee pyou vested in the characters - adult and child alike. Actually, the kids did a really good job with their roles. The adults as well, but it's not common to find a cast this large (~5 core kids, + 3 peripherals, and maybe 10 extras) that all come off so believable in their portrayal. The story was good, and wove it's way slowly but never dragging. I found myself pulling for certain people, then shortly thereafter being disgusted with the next truth revealed about them. There is no big 'gotcha' in there, nor any cool twists that make you say 'wow', just a solid tale with good acting and excellent colors for a stark setting. All in all, a very solid 'ghost story', one I would indeed recommend.

...and tonight was another double feature :D

Edge of Darkness (2010)

So, yeah, you take Mel Gibson and imagine him as some out of control, delusional man waving a gun and threatening people...oh, wait, imagine?

Seriously, though...move was ehhhhh. For a guy who lost his daughter that meant the world to him, he floats from delusional to uber cop in self-control to brain-disconnected guy to pet project for a super assassin type. Whatever :| I want to give a little credit to the story, just for being something slightly different than the usual fare (dirty gov't cover up, and what they cover up, and how), but in all it's just a weird and un-entertaining film. Don't waste your time, seriously. The only 'good' part, for me at least, was the super assassin type who can't decide to kill Mel (please?!?!?) or help him. At least he seemed more realistic with that dilemma. Mel? Inconsistent with the character, bumbling thru a plot that tried some twists but just ended up stubbing it's toe along the way.

Truth be told, I thought I was going to watch Ransom....so maybe that's why this disappointed me so much. :\ I still intend to watch Ransom, I just couldn't take a double helping of Mel tonight.

Ninja Assasin (2009)

Ok, so I've been wanting to see this for a LONG time. Super assassin (do I have a theme tonight? If so, it was by accident) ... ninja style. Trailers and teasers were good, could the flick live up to the hype? Almost yes, but a lot of no. First I'll start with props to 'Rain', the actor who plays our hero ninja. Beyond that, fuck all the acting, it sucked...bad. Except for maybe the guy who played his 'father'. The entirety of the film fluctuated between flashbacks of his growing up in this remote mountain ninja training camp for orphans and the experiences that built up his character, in contrast with a current international police detective 'stumbling' upon a 'ninja-assassin for hire' arrangement employed by govt's around the world. For those of us that love kung fu flicks, the flashbacks were decent. The rest of the film focusing on some American chick working for Europol (yeah, right?) and was filmed in Germany with a mish mash of bad actors, poor dialogue, and shit story. Essentially, I think they had to pay some people to say some gibberish in hopes of pasting together all their fight scenes. They should have just presented the fight scenes...that's what we came for, and the rest was slow and really annoying.

Now, to the good part, the fight scenes. Seems someone discovered how to do the latest blood splatter effect, so we used it in every fight scene, on every hit (kill or wound), from beginning to end. It was kinda cool the first 30 times, but then you get to the second or third fight and it's kinda :so-what: 8) The other special effects investment was remapping the Matrix bullet effect into flying ninja stars. That was also over used to the point where it was cool for the first 500 or so, but then...well, then it was still kinda cool, even if it was played out.

Bottom line, we (I) came for the fight scenes. Those were decent, but overkilled (pun intended) with the special effects. The rest of the scenes were a waste of time. I do not recommend this, on any count.

^i am.

Buffalo '66

did not like. i liked christina ricci though. the way the picture looked--like old home-movie film--was appealing. but overall i was bored and even annoyed at times.

Source Code. I enjoyed it for the most part. I actually enjoyed the ending as well.
