I don't want to smoke cigarettes, but I'm addicted so I feel as if I have to. I don't make enough money to buy a pack a day, but I don't have the willpower to go a day without one. I get anxious about going places without a few smokes, when I don't have any I don't even want to leave my house because I know once I get out there I'm going to want one really bad... what can I do? I want to quit, but it's so hard... Can someone give me some tips on how you quit smoking? Here are some things you should know

I'm not willing to chew that nicorette gum
I'm cannot buy the patches
I can't stop hanging out with my friends that smoke because they all smoke
I can't buy a nicorette inhaler, or any of that stuff :(

I want to quit cold-turkey, but it's just SO hard, because I'm ALWAYS around people that are smoking...

Do you have insurance ? Check with your doctor about chantix or welbutrin - make sure you go through both these drugs and interactions with him. But both of these have tended to work well for people I know who want to quit. Good luck man.

sorry to say but the success rate of quiting nicotine cold turkey is pretty damn low.....

why wont you use the gum? they have new formula's that taste better now, many of my friends have had success.......

you could also try a taper........

I second wellbutrin. After being prescribed I noticed a reduction in cigarette cravings, it will likely help.

Allen Carr's Easyway to Stop Smoking is a popular book for quitting cold-turkey. He attempts to create a shift in perception to make us lose our desire to smoke by understanding the reasons why we do and how we got caught up in the cycle.

I actually really need to stop also - i have sleep apnea and I've been waking up gasping for air - took me about a minute the other night - scary :(.

welbutrin worked far better for smoking cessation than chiantix..... and was far cheaper & less insane.

I lost all desire to smoke after a week of welbutrin, and if I did try to smoke, it'd taste horrible and give me a headache.

i heard the patches REALLY help. though you can get some really bad nightmares if you leave them on while sleeping. =/

but hey, if you feel you're ready to quit, go for it. no one can do it for you, and you can only do it if you believe in yourself. while i've never been addicted to cigarettes, several of my close family members have been addicted and successfully quit. i remember they couldn't make it through a meal without having to go outside to smoke. but you know, they did, and I'm certain you can too.

you're gonna have to take precautions though. you probably won't be able to leave your house for a few days, and prepare to be relatively miserable for as long as it takes. if you have to dine with Ben&Jerrys every night for the next month, so be it man, it'll be worth it. tell all your friends you're quitting, and ask them to respect that and not have ANY cigarettes on them when they're around you. i'd even recommend asking them to refrain from smoking before they see you, as you don't want to be hanging out and suddenly smell cigarettes and start craving all over again.

you already know this is going to be hard. but i'll tell you one thing, my stepsister smoked for over 10 years and my stepmom at least 30 and they quit practically cold turkey (i do think my stepmom chewed the gum). it took my stepsister two years, but now she HATES the smell of cigarette smoke. man, you can do it, you just have to stick to it and believe you can do it. if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here and so is the rest of BL. <3

thanks buddy I appreciate it. I really do believe I can quit, I'm pretty confident in myself... Sadly I don't have health insurance so I guess it's gotta be cold-turkey. Oh well, I'm going to stock up on food and drinks and lock myself in my house for a week until I stop craving a bit. I'm going to tell my friends not to smoke around me, too. :p

yeah, that's the attitude! i wish you the best of luck. maybe go to the library and check out some books, like the one Legerity mentioned. definitely have something to turn to at all times. and remember, you can do this, we all believe in you. =]

so, do you have the date set for when you're stopping?
