Has anyone stopped using shampoo, soap or deodorant completely?

  • If you stopped using shampoo, do you use baking soda or a vinegar rinse?
  • If you stopped using soap, do you find you smell down there at all? Do you just scrub and that's enough?
  • If you stopped using deodorant, was there a normalizing period for your pits to stop stinking? Did you have much body odor to begin with?

The idea of this intrigues me. I've tried not using deodorant and that just doesn't work but I'm tempted to rinse my hair with only water for a while and see how it normalizes.

Any personal accounts are appreciated!

stopped using shampoo when i was younger, for about 4 months. I didn't rinse/clean my hair with anything at all. my plan was to dread it, but that wasn't really me.

Did the oil levels normalize? Why did you start using shampoo again?

I have the same results with the skin on my face if I use soap or not. I guess it's just a mental thing when I use it but I should just stop. No point in using those chemicals on my skin if it isn't necessary!

In the archived girlie thread there was a lot of discussion on this.
(You can find the link in the first post of that thread but I will find it and link it here for you )

*Edit: IT was actually two threads back- FOUND HERE.

I went with no shampoo a while and did both vinegar rinses and baking soda.........
There were also suggestions for dry shampoos and stuff.

As far as soaps, you can use homemade scrubs (oatmeal/sugar/seeds or other exfoliant in oils) in place of a soap- if you add an essential oil such as peppermint, clove, lavender, eucalyptus - those are all anti bacterial and can replace soap and also be used for cleaning products :)

i use simple bar soap to wash my hands(daily) and body(2-3/week), i never use deodorant or wash my hair with shampoo. sometimes i use soap in the shower, but usually just really hot water to scald the dirt off.

Once (a year ago) I stopped using shampoo, my hair was healthier and shinier with no conditioner or shit. just natural. and its not greasy. it takes longer and is more work to clean (i have long hair) but it feels good man.

i never liked deodorant, it was easy to quit using that shit like 3 years ago. i think it makes you feel dirtier.

Why did you give up on the soap nuts?

I'm going to try just rinsing/scrubbing my hair. Not sure if that will last as I have plans this weekend :D but I shall try again!

I read (in the soap nuts thread) that n30 bought some to try on her partner's clothes... how did they hold up to dirty work clothes, n3o?

While I don't think i could ever completely stop using shampoo, the stuff I use is so mild and has absolutely no nasties in it. It means that i need to shampoo my hair fairly regularly, but i don't mind. I get quite an itchy scalp if/when i sweat (which is fairly regularly as i go to gym a few times a week - sweaty, oily hair would not be a good look for me, lol.

Here is what i use:

Here is the link to information about their shampoos (completely soap free):

Moogoo shampoo information

I know i harp on about these products, but it's seriously the only product where i've seen a profoundly positive result with my hair. I've also recommended it to numerous people; 5 of which have told me that their eczema/itchy dry scalp/dandruff issues have completely disappeared in a few weeks.

Anyway, this thread is about not using any kind of cleanser so i'll shut up ;) but i thought i'd throw it out there as an alternative :)

As for other cleansing products - i never use any in the shower - no shower gels/smelly stuff; I just use very warm water and i've never had an issue any odour problems . I wash my face with natural products and use a moisturiser; if i don't, my skin breaks out. I use bio oil after every shower and argan oil to keep my hair soft.

I've not actually used soap on anywhere aside from my hands for years, come to think of it. I'm sorry i can't offer any info on not using shampoo and the subsequent potential oil issues, but i know that i've not had any adverse effects from removing soap products from my other cleansing routines.

The moogoo cleansing milk is very good :) it can be used on the face and body - if i've been doing any gardening or similar and actually need to use a cleanser in the shower, that's what i use. :)

Since switching over to all natural bar soap, shampoo and conditioner, I find that I need to wash my body and hair less and have even stopped using conditioner regularly. I wash my body every two days and though I wash my hair every day, I could go without.

I believe that if we slowly cut down on what we use, our bodies will adjust accordingly. Unlike giving up food, giving up something like soap all at once may have adverse effects on your body and skin. My skin is healthier since cutting back washing my body and I'm planning on cutting back again very soon, to perhaps every three days.

I still shower; however, when I shower on the non-soap days, I just wash myself with water and the scrub or just my hands (no pun intended). I am almost sure we can go without soap.

This.

Also, to the OP, on days when I don't use soap (I typically wash every two or three days depending on my activities), I just rinse very well "down there" and haven't noticed any odor. Also haven't noticed any pit odor, but I've been keeping the hair at bay which helps a lot with the odor. (It also probably helps stop the odor that I do still use deodorant albeit a more natural one, but on days I forget to put on deodorant, I don't typically notice 'til after I've exercised and even then the smell's not too bad lol.)

On days that I don't use shampoo (up to every other, going to try every third soon), my hair doesn't look oily or dirty or anything, but I keep it tied back 90% of the time since it's very long. Since switching to the more natural shampoo and not washing it every day, my scalp has felt so much better. It still gets itchy after sweating, like Samadhi mentioned, but it's nothing compared to the dandruff I used to get if I went more than a day without washing my hair when I was using "top of the line" shampoo.

Shampoo -- I shave my head.
Soap - minimal. I scrub.
Deoderant - I quit using it a few months ago. But I scrub my armpits in the shower every night. Nobody has noticed any difference in how I smell. GF still complains that I smell too clean. This and I commute by bicycle 20 miles per day and run 20 miles per week. I sweat out most of the stinky toxins when I'm running and my running clothes quickly get very smelly. But not my non-running clothes. And, I tend not to stink as much as I used too before I started running.

Also, patchouli oil is great for covering up BO.

patchouli SMELLS like BO to some of us.

WRT hair, (i will never go anti soap on the body, way too into pretty smells and clean feel) are the anti sulfates good enough for you? because sally's carries a product called hair one you may be interested in.

Finding substitutes for body washes/soaps would seem out of the question for me. On another note, has anyone found any good substitutes for toothpaste or stopping brushing teeth altogether?

Gnar, I was actually looking at that soap before. However, the bottle is itself very confusing. I think I'll stick with what I have right now.

On that note, I went two days without washing my hair and it still felt perfectly fine. Three days without washing my skin was ay-okay also.

Grow some balls and make your own!!

It is tricky, but the patient are rewarded.

I've been using my own home-made soap for almost two years now. I say this and I have a serious phobia of any kind of skin trouble.

For cereals, here is the formula:

Patience
------------ = Luxury Soap
Lye + fat

I intend soon on trying to substitute Potash for the lye to make an all-purpose liquid soap.

Gnar: "pure castile"? Pffft yeah right. Castile soap is NECESSARILY solid, no matter how you "purify" it! You can make "Liquid Olive Oil Glycerin Soap," but please, for the sake of all that's pure don't call it "castile"! (General "you" here). Oh, and (real) castile it is one of the easiest to make - the only trick is that the real stuff uses a base that is extracted from a plant that only grows in the Mediterranean region (natively), rather than pure lye.

Xessie: if you're interested, I can give you some details next time we talk :)

p.s. Here is another one for anti-deodorant. Besides, I can't think of much that's more erotic than fresh b.o., but apparently I'm slightly kinky for thinking so...
