Pet Peeves v. 5.0

It's especially irritating when bookish types act like non-spellers are just stupid. They may be incredibly talented mechanically, or artistically, or some other area far removed from grammar. As talents go, spelling is kinda lame.

Spelling shouldn't be a "talent", which I think is where much of the animosity stems from. A lot of the time, using your instead of you're is just a matter of not giving a shit, and in cases like that, I think it does show a marked lack of intelligence.

You can be smart without being intelligent, and you can be intelligent without being smart.

^ I agree, I just think it's annoying to see people pointing it out. Wow, you can spell to the second grade level! Here's a cookie. The people that don't spell the words correctly probably don't care by this point and pointing it out doesn't really accomplish much except for making someone feel great about being able to spell with the competency of a second grader.

I can agree with this. People shouldn't correct other people's grammar unless teaching a class or proofreading a paper or something like that. Or, among my group of friends, some of us want to be informed when we have made a blunder because we wish to speak and write properly and would want an error corrected before we make the same error again in front of someone important, such as a potential employer. I give my friends props if they catch me making an error, since I consider myself an expert.

That said, anyone who acts as though he has defeated an opponent's argument merely by pointing out flawed grammar or spelling is a complete tool. If someone resorts to such a tactic, I usually assume he has no counter to the actual argument.

But, when someone makes a post such as "LOL! Your such a fkin idiot!" I believe it is acceptable to call the person out on being a dimwitted unintelligent fool. Note that I said "appropriate," not "wise" or "necessary." Chances are, the person won't understand any further communication, so why bother?

Spelling isn't so much a talent as acquired knowledge.

I agree with what you said but I am puzzled and intrigued by your last sentence. Could you explain what you mean?

Spelling isn't so much a talent as acquired knowledge.

Agreed. However, that knowledge comes quite easily and naturally to some. For others it's a tedious struggle. A few people will never get it, in much the same way as I will never paint beautifully or play sports well. Perhaps "talent" was a poor choice of words, but there is definitely an affinity for grammar that is innate to varying degrees among different people. Personally, I'd rather be able to paint.

you didn't say "appropriate", you said "acceptable". oh, and the comma should be outside the quotes...

I hate it when women plaster pounds of makeup onto their faces. Sometimes I suspect underneath all that makeup they'd look quite attractive, but instead it looks like they have something to hide and makes them look cheap, tacky and shallow/superficial.

I hate it when I'm in public and desperately need to go to the toilet but there are no toilets to be found anywhere.

edit: another big pet peeve of mine is when people fail to realise that the rastafari movement is a religion and think that a rasta is just a black dude with dreadlocks who likes reggae music and smokes weed.

Another ever popular English language peeve:

Damn. Good catch. I am not sure if I meant for both those words to be "acceptable" or "Appropriate." I think either word works but obviously I should have written the same word each time. I am going to fire my proofreader.

Regarding the comma, I disagree. Can you provide a source supporting your position? Everything I have ever read says to put a comma inside quotation marks.

Perhaps if you didn't repeat yourself when you get annoyed you wouldn't run out of swear words as quickly ;)

I hate dogma.

Just because your personal trainer tells you that stretching before exercise, it doesn't mean it's going to do you any good. I find peoples' reluctance to disbelieve myths in general to be very annoying.

People (usually under 30 years old) who are book smart and proud of it. Not so much a pet peeve but i'm pretty sure it's impossible to connect with these people. IMEs they possess the wisdom and creativity of a child and have an extremely generic sense of humor.

if the comma was part of the text you are quoting, it should be inside the quotes. if not, it is not part of the quote and should be outside .

Not a parent then? Children are purely remarkable in both their creativity and their wisdom. Most of that gets buried by the late teens or so, i think. Anyone who retains it usually garners the label "crazy". Or at least "eccentric".

I know what you mean, though. Anyone who develops any skill that isn't universal, and then looks down his/her nose at people who don't have the exact same skill gets to be irritating. Doctors are notorious. One would hope most people would outgrow that attitude by 30, but, alas, not always.

Ageism works both ways; I'm sure they think the same of you.

I'm 24, regardless, I don't give a fuck about what some periodic table addict thinks of me.

It wasn't necessarily a knock on the educated, I earned my bachelor's right on schedule, easily, but not through comprehensive studying, instead, understanding each instructor's specific expectations and patterns.

Speaking of commercials, you know that one where there is a taco party outside some girl's office? I fucking hate how that guy with the glasses chews his tacos!!! I have a hard time being around certain eaters, like people who have to take a drink after every piece of food they eat:|
