What are the pros and cons of having a medical marijuana card? I know it will save me if I get caught with possession, but will having a card negatively affect my ability to get a job (like with the government), or health insurance? I've heard that in getting the card I'll be registered onto some list that is accessible by the government.

Will my insurance rates go up?

you will be on a list, i know that for sure

and while i cant say 100% for sure, i do believe people on this board have made mention of some job discrimination against med MJ users, not necessarily cuz u have a card but even with a medical card some places wont excuse the failed drug screening, i believe

someone from CA will chime in shortly

It will all depend on the state you are in and the specific laws and regulations your state has passed. In Colorado, You will be on a list, accessible to Law Enforcement and Dispensaries (to confirm you are a legit cardholders). That list isn't public. It cannot prevent you from getting a job, or health insurance, but there is no legal protection against a drug test or denial of work based on the results of the test. So basically, no one (except LEO or a dispensary that you authorize) can find out if you are a card-holder unless you tell them, but if they drug test you, your card basically means nothing to them legally.

It's different in every state though.

Good point. I'm in Cali!

Would visiting a medical marijuana evaluator and getting my card from them be seen on my medical records?

okay so what i dont get is how people are being turned down for jobs because they have a card and test positive for THC, but what if they are prescribed a benzo? medical marijuana is approved by a doctor, its practically a prescription. are people being turned down for jobs if they are on...say..ativan for anxiety?

You could be turned down for a job if you test positive for a benzo even if you have a prescription.

Because marijuana is still illegal on a federal level. And we are all run by the federal government. A lot of businesses wont hire because they are scared they could possibly get introuble. Majority of people still think pot is bad.

also because its illegal federally, and insurance companies will use any reason to help themselves out.

Not long ago possession of less than an ounce was reduced to an infraction in California, which means a fine of less than $100 and no court or jail. Like a traffic ticket, basically. Given the cost of the card (typically 60 to $150 for a first timer) it really isn't worth it anymore unless you plan on being in possession of more than an ounce, which is really only likely if you are growing.

The Coast Guard won't have access to your rec (your letter of recommendation signed by a doctor). Don't offer information. If you had criminal charges against you, you would have something serious to worry about. Your mmj rec (medical marijuana letter of recommendation) isn't an offense. I have known a few people who went into the armed forces after testing positive for weed. Their recruiter just gave them more time and had them retest.

It is quite unfortunate that a young person willing to spend two years or four years away from their family and the things they personally enjoy for a country that disallows marijuana but allows (and seems to encourage) cigarettes.

It's obscene.

Just sign up for the Coast Guard, make sure you test negative, and don't offer information. If asked point blank if you have ever used drugs or alcohol, it's not like you are the ONLY one who answers yes! In fact I wish everyone everywhere answered yes to that question... then maybe governments would be forced to realize they failed.

I would love it if you came back to this board and posted about what happened when you went to see a/your recruiter from the Coast Guard.

I tried to buy a life insurance policy a few years ago. A nurse came to my home, took my vitals and various samples. About a month later I received a letter from the insurance company that I tested positive for marijuana. I countered with a copy of my rec and a strongly worded letter, to no avail. In fact I can't get good life insurance at any cost. Apparently I am more of a danger to myself because I use weed than I would be if I drank alcohol.

The sixties were going to be the revolution, but we failed. It is going to take everyone making an issue out of mmj at every opportunity, if we are ever going to be allowed to stop all this hiding the weed bullshit we live through all the time.
