That is FUCKED, I take it since its on the pharmacy guild site it is definite? It isn't as bad as fully prescription only but its gay as fuck. Its just a way to milk more coin out of us because you can't buy in bulk. How does pack size stop the retards who want to eat them by the handful in any way?

Hm ok yeah thanks for the link.

Can't post that table without the format screwing up.

But what does this bit mean?

How existing* products are affected by the change:
After 1 May 2010

Nurofen® Plus and other brands
12, 24 units (#)

Panadeine® and other brands
10, 16, 20, 24 units (#)

Aspalgin® and other brands
20 units (#)

Panadeine® Extra and other brands
12 units (#)

Mersyndol® and other brands 20 units (#)

Does that mean those products will change too after May 1st?

EDIT: Ok I see now, after may those will be pharmacist only, I guess not on the shelves. No difference, here I've always had to ask the pharmacist and get the usual 21 questions.

"How does pack size stop the retards who want to eat them by the handful in any way?"
It doesn't, and I doubt that was the purpose. Otherwise they would have lowered the pack size below 24. Since they said people at 20 a day or whatever.

Fuck this pisses me off.

Oh and also they will probs change the packs soon to 40 to abide by this law. Spose that's not too bad.

* products with a daily dose of 6 units (e.g. Nurofen® Plus) may come in packs of up to 30 units
* products with a daily dose of 8 units (e.g. Panadeine®) may come in packs of up to 40 units

Well I'd imagine the reasoning is that it's harder to consume larger quantities for extended periods of time if you can only purchase 24 at a time, and it would be easier for pharmacists to identify those who are consuming in large quantities. They're attempting to discourage people who are taking over the recommended doseage for days or weeks on end, and I honestly have to agree that this is an effective method of doing so. In their eyes, anybody who needs to take these medications for longer than a few days at a time should be seeing a doctor and thus have access to a script anyway, and by forcing people to seek out a doctor for prolonged use, they're putting anybody who uses heavily under the eye of a medical professional who can monitor their useage. It's inconveniant for the people who take them regularly or in stretches of a week or two at a time for legitimate reasons that don't necessarily call for a visit to the doctors, but I guess they feel that's outweighed by hopefully reducing excessive consumption.

Though I have to say, I'm surprised they didn't go with cigarette style warning boxes on the packaging first. The biggest issue here is ignorance.

I just got prescribed the 30 mg codeine panadeine fortes (script only) and as I was waiting for my script to be processed i grabbed a couple boxes of nurofen + as well, got to the front counter and the girl informed me that due to N+ having codeine in it, I was only allowed 1 box at a time unless i did the whole name address thing with a pharmacist... Didn't bother as I figured I was getting a bit greedy anyway

yeah, as others have stated, i highly doubt it's going to be a prescription case.

It'll be like potent anti-histamines, the pharmacist takes your details, makes a quick distinction as to why you need the medication, makes a label, and sells you the product.

ironically i just ordered 2 96 packs off the net today! good thing i decided to now

If you read my link it gives all of the details. 12 and 24 packs will be available at a pharmacy with your name and address taken and the box labelled. Any more than this and you will need a prescription after May the 1st.

Could be a blessing in disguise for those of us that use codeine a little too much recreationally, but also a royal pain in the arse for those that need it legitimately for pain relief but don't want to fork out the cash for a visit to the GP every time we need some....

^ or a pain in the arse for those of us who have only recently discovered the pleasures of recreational codeine 8)

I've never had my details taken for antihistamines, unless you're referring to something stronger than promethazine. Why would they? They aren't particularly abuseable...

You can still use recreationally, it just means having to jump around through a few pharmacies. You don't want to dose too much anyway, tolerance climbs very rapidly.

I just saw an advertisement on TV for Nurofen plus and at the end of the advert they said 'soon to be found behind the counter' which showed a person going to the shelve and noticing an empty space, and then proceeding to the counter with all the Nurofen plus been displayed behind the pharmacist.

That's interesting, so Nurofen are telling people to stock up now.

How hilarious.

I predict a national nurofen shortage to erupt any day now.... !!!

fuck, chemist warehouse here I come. lol

Pain in the arse imo. I'm not elligible for bulk billing (anyone who lives in Brisbane knows it's almost non-existant), and when my back plays up it's the only thing that keeps me going at work. I don't abuse it so why should I get the third degree everytime I ask for a 24 pack? :(

Pharmaceutical drugs that they market as okay to take have negative side-effects if taken regularly?

I am 100% surprised. No really, completely shocked about this.

Not.

Well let me tell you codeine lovers out there STOCK UP NOW! I went to 3 pharmacies yesterday, the first refused to sell anything over a 24 pack and said they had run out of the bigger packs and the new laws took effect as soon as the big boxes sold out.

The second pharmacy didn't have any qualms selling me a 100 pack of codalgin, I enquired about the new laws, the girl who served me didn't know but the pharmacist confirmed codeine was becoming S4. I asked her if she could sell me several boxes so I could avoid the increased cost for longer, she informed me it has always been the law they couldn't sell more than one of the largest pack size to a customer on any given occassion.

The third pharmacy sold me a 96 pack but they took my drivers lisence and recorded my details. They informed me that the days of being able to purchase more than 24 were numbered.

I plan to hit every pharmacy I can between now and May 1st and stock the fuck up on big packs. I highly suggest anyone who loves their codeine and doesn't want to pay through the nose for it and have to hit several pharmacies for a decent dose does the same. This is so fucked, I love my codeine, I don't want to have to pay twice as much for it and go to several pharmacies. I just hope that when they record details its not a statewide or national database but just for the individual pharmacy.

On the topic of sedative antihistamines, the first time I bought restavit (doxylamine succinate 25mg tablets) the pharmacist asked to see my ID but he didn't record any details. I have bought it a good many times since then without having to show ID.

I honestly can't believe they are doing this, I remember when you used to be able to buy the things in coles. Its fucking wrong that they are restricting the only legit OTC pain relief out there. If they are that concerned about people fucking up their organs they should make pure codeine tabs, but we all know that will never happen.

I really predict this is going to create a bigger black market for prescription drugs when these codeine abusers start having to go shop for scripts and realise theres bigger and better things out there. I don't see whats so hard about putting a warning on the pack of the dangers of eating big quantities of these pills, if someone is still dumb enough to they can hardly bitch about the health consequences. If you want to abuse codeine CWE is hardly a difficult procedure to perform or a well kept secret.

^DM there are actually pure codeine tablets (30mg) but they're obviously prescription only and come in boxes of 20 or 100. they're usually prescribed to those with IBS according to my dr. only tiny suckers as well, so it sure beats having to neck a cup of solution. just don't swallow them without a drink - they taste rank as you would imagine

^ Yeah i came into contact with some 30mg pure codeine tablets last year sometime, there really small circular tablets, came in a box of 20. Still wish i could get more of them..

64 Nurofen tablets a day? Damn someone really should of told her about CWE.

It didn't really seem like codeine was the problem either. It's the ibuprofen causing the problems. But of course they were still trying to blame codeine containing tablets. And no mention of panadeine? Taking shit loads of paracetamol can be dangerous as well.
