I see alot of talk about using steroids for enhancing the results of your workouts. But does anybody out there actually get them prescribed legitimately by a doctor? I'm not asking for sources, I just want to know if anybody gets anabolics prescribed to supplement their workout regimen.

Why wouldn't it be ethical for a doctor to prescribe testosterone as long as your cholesterol and liver function were being closely monitored? I know doctors can prescribe any drug for off label usage, so I'm wondering if there are doctors out there who consider muscle building a legitimate use for testosterone. They can prescribe it if you have low test levels, so why not for muscle building?

The next time I go in for a general physical exam, I'm going to ask my GP about this.

I once asked for a testosterone level test and although I fell within the normal range, it seemed like the range was quite broad and there was plenty of room there for improvement. I just don't want to abuse my body and end up hurting myself. I want good medical advice and supervision if I'm going to run anything.

AG, not to downplay your situation or abilities, but if you said in HL that today was your first time working out your legs...it might be a bit early to start thinking about anabolics and testosterone boosters. Just focus on developing a good foundation first, and in a year or so if you feel like you've hit a wall, then it might be a better time for looking at this as an option.

wow I missed that & agree.
just to add if you going to do that to the Dr. go for it all or nothing. I was paying $20 for 10cc 200mg cyp, prop & enathate. All 3 were $20 each for a bottle. So look how much you can make or save? Then you know you gonna get nolvadex, hcg & clomid no questions asked. You gotta feel out these doc's, they all diff & it may take a while

The reason I only started working my legs is because I've always had lean strong legs. It was my upper body that was most in need of improvement. So that's what I have been focusing on.

I've done lots of martial arts and running in the past with some weight training. But I had a few bad years where I wasn't doing much at all and I let myself get out of shape.

Since I've been going to the gym regularly the past few years I've dropped 35 pounds and gained some good strength and muscle. My legs didn't need much work. But I'm starting to feel like my gains are becoming more difficult even though I put in a good 90 minute workout. Somebody suggested that lower body compound exercises could boost test levels and help with overall gains if I wasn't doing any leg work at all. So I started working squats in last week and this week. That's also after I do a couple miles on the treadmill to warm up before I hit the weights.

I won't see my GP for about 3 more months so I wouldn't be asking for any supplements until then. If it's an advantage and can help, why not at least ask about it?

If you are a young man with test levels within range, it is very unlikely a doctor will prescribe you testosterone...

heh... I'm no longer a young man. So if anything, I should be able to make a case that testosterone supplements could help slow the aging process and inevitable physical degeneration even if you're working out hard. I know there is a school of thought out there that anabolics and hgh supplements are entirely appropriate as you age because your body begins to naturally produce less and less of them. As long as you're working hard in the gym, your body should be able to put these hormone supplements to good use.

HRT/TRT/andropause are real things. I don't like the idea of "scamming" doctors or trying to find quacks to prescribe these things as it may draw attention away from individuals that DO need these things.

As for feeling like you need them- what you need is some patience and dicipline. If you've only started doing legs then you don't need them. Even if you HAD been doing legs I would have suggested diet/workout changes first. You interested in posting detailed diet/workout schedules for input?

I'm not trying to "scam" at all. I would simply inquire of my GP if testosterone supplements would help me make better progress in gaining muscle and losing fat provided I stick with a regular gym routine.

I go at least every other day, sometimes only taking one or two days off a week. I start with about 40 minutes on the treadmill to warm up. I then do 5x10-15 on an ab crunch machine alternating with 4x15 on a torso twist machine. That way I get in aerobics and core every workout. Then I work on a body part.

For back I do 5x8-12 seated rows alternating with 5x8-12 lat pulldown rows.

For shoulders I do 5x8-12 military press, 5x8-12 dumbell lateral raises alternating with 5x8-12 dumbell forward raises.

For chest I do 5x8-12 wide grip bench press alternating with 5x8-12 narrow grip bench press and then 5x8-12 on a seated pec squeeze machine.

For arms I do 5x8-12 on a seated curl machine alternating with 5x8-12 on a seated dip/tricep extension machine. I'll probably start adding some concentration dumbell curls and tricep extensions, but I've been sticking with compound exercises so far.

And now I've added squats in the past couple weeks. I plan to add some straight leg dead lifts too.

As for diet, I eat plenty of good lean steak and chicken accompanied by a plain baked potato or brown rice. I like all kinds of veggies and I either steam them or stir fry in olive oil. I occasionally snack on mixed nuts. I only buy whole grain bread and have eggs on toast after early morning workouts on weekends. I usually just eat oatmeal, cheerios or fruit for breakfast on work days. For lunch I'll have a turkey sandwich on whole grain bread with lettuce and tomato. Sometimes I'll have soup with that. I take a multi vitamin once a day.

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

I'm not just looking for "big". I want more lean muscle mass and less fat. The older you get, the harder it is to lose fat around the waist and other problem areas. That's one reason why I start every workout on the treadmill. And having more muscle will burn more calories.

I'll definitely take the advice about the deadlifts and cleans in addition to the squats I already started. Thanks!

I'm currently prescribed testosterone and have been for over a year, diagnosed with secondary hypogonadism due to a 2 cm microadenoma on my pituitary gland. So to answer your question specifically I am not prescribed testosterone to "supplement [my] workout regimen".

You are going to be hard pressed to find a doctor that will prescribe any anabolic steroid for the reason you are searching. Don't get me wrong they are out there. Matter of fact that is how I found my doctor. After 14 years of asking around and keeping my ear to the ground I found a GP that would take $50 cash for a script of testosterone. I thought I was going to some quack but when I met with him he asked all the right questions and next thing I knew I was having 3 blood tests, an MRI and 2 CT scans. Only to find out I have an abnormal growth in my brain.

Heavy lifts (per The Real Fatman), cardio in moderation, regular sexual activity (no kidding) and a healthy amount of deep, recuperative sleep will have you gaining and growing quite well.

p-mo and negrogesic always give solid advice. Listen up.

Good luck bro.

You need to have some protein in there. How many eggs do you have on a weekend? Anything less than 4 is too little. How many meals a day do you eat? You should be aiming to eat every 2 hours or so. Do you have a shake post-workout? Any idea how much protein you eat in a day? You should be aiming for about 200g (at least). For a cutting/recomping diet you need to drop some of the carbs that your eating and replace them with protein- fresh fish and chicken are great but can get costly. There's always tuna, whey, cottage cheese (FYI I can't eat that stuff- fuckin gross- but if you like it go ahead), quinoa, soybeans, etc. The snacking on nuts is great- I usually eat 100-200gs every day.

As for your workout routine- you rely to much on machines. Doing the freeweight equivelent (and there are ones for every exercise that you listed) is much better for you.

my doctor hooks me up all the time and i am only 30. i have been getting my stuff from thre pharmacy since i was 18. you just have to find a doctor thats down for the cause

They do to normalize.. but it's not going to help muscle building.. They help restore test. to give you a normal life, not to enhance muscle size

What you need is a bodybuilding consultant. That's someone whose job it is to help normal people and athletes get the good out of the cycles and training and diet, without getting the bad.

Most doctors are extremely stupid and misinformed when it comes to steroids and believe they are extremely dangerous substances when they truly aren't when used properly.

Have you seen the movie "Bigger, stronger faster"?

Never heard of that movie. I doubt my doctor will be willing to consult as my bodybuilding coach nor could I afford him anyways! But I will inquire about supplements and see what advice I get. I'll post his answers.

Bigger, Stronger, Faster is about steroids in sports. It is a very unbiased documentary about the whole thing and incidently shows how most doctors are very uninformed about all that.

It's a fairly recent documentary, you should be able to get your hands on it fairly easily and is, IMO, very much worth a viewing.
