Drug User, Abuser or Addict...Which Best Describes You?

Most anti-drug propagandists would have us believe that drug use inevitably leads to addiction, though this is NOT the case...even with harder drugs. There are three main categories into which most drug afficianados fit--user, abuser and addict.

Drug USERS take drugs to enhance their lives, not to escape them. They use in moderation (usually socially) and have no problem turning down drugs if they're not in the mood to use. They may use drugs on and off throughout their lives or give them up over time, but never become addicted.

Drug ABUSERS use drugs to cope with the undesirable parts of life, to numb out or to "get wasted". They often take dangerously high doses of drugs and do irresponsible things like driving while severely intoxicated or getting into drug-induced fights. They're not yet addicts but risk addiction and other problems if they don't change these behaviors. (The alcohol-related equivalents would be "binge drinkers" and "problem drinkers").

Drug ADDICTS are physically and mentally dependent on their drug(s) of choice. They choose drugs over food, family and other necessities and often neglect their health/appearance because of drugs. They have little or no concern for their own safety when using and may take dangerous risks in the name of getting high. Most long-term addicts end up losing the things that were once important to them, like jobs, money, friends, etc, though this is not always the case.

So which one are you and why? Do you think it's possible to remain a "user" with any substance, or are some so destructive that they always lead to addiction? Also, what are your drugs of choice and what do you do to prevent progressing to addiction (assuming you're not already an addict)?

I consider myself a "user" for several reasons. First, I stick to moderate/medicinal doses instead of large "recreational" ones. I use daily or semi-daily, but only in very minute amounts as a means of relaxing after work and have maintained the same dose/schedule for over 2 years with plenty of breaks in between. My DOCs are poppy tea, propylhexedrine and weed, though I only use tea daily, usually 3-4 sips containing 2-3 pods daily.

I have definitely slipped into "ABUSER" territory, but mostly when I was younger and uninformed. I acknowledge the possibility that I or anyone else who uses drugs could one day become addicted, but do everything I can to prevent it. Could definitely see myself slipping into ADDICT territory if I ever had steady access to Lortabs or other pain pills (my REAL DOCs), but even then I couldn't see myself taking huge doses or neglecting the things I care about most.

I would have to say I am a user, but I used to be an addict of Heroin. My use has cut down greatly over the past year, and I am no longer physically dependent, only mentally. Also I don't take dangerous risks in the name of getting high.

I'm indeed a drug user...I take ecstasy in moderation but smoke weed pretty much every weekend.. I can also handle going out clubbing without the need for ecstasy to have a good time unlike some people i no...

Heavy user I guess.

I do use high doses of a few drugs - but I wouldn't call them dangerous & I'm not trying to blot out bad parts of life or whatever.

I don't use drugs as coping mechanisms, they're just fun.

Probably addict. My daily poppy use and frequent psychedelic use does not seem to be causing any harm yet. If I start to feel a decline in mental or physical health, then I'll call myself an abuser(which I have been at some points).

One can be an addict and stay healthy and happy, or at least in my case, much more neutral mooded and far less depressed than before I became one.

I don't consider it abuse unless it is mentally or physically hurting you, or preventing you from meeting goals and obligations in your life

somewhere between user and abuser. I mainly use stims for my ADD, but more then I need and enjoy the euphoria. But it still enables me to be more productive and less scatter brained.

I usually take opioids for pain, but again, I go to the upper tolerable dosage and nod. but it does take away of my physical pain, caused usually from my occupation.

i wud say im somewhere between user and abuser. i definently use to "enhance" a party or whatever but i also love getting wasted lol

User. Larger quantities, poly-drug. I use mainly to help better my life, energy, stamina, confidence, relationships. I am generally a better person with drugs, take FAR better care of my appearance, am more considerate towards people (esp children begging at traffic lights whereas I might have chased them away from my car if I was just pissed), watch what I eat, make sure I sleep properly (although my sleep hygiene has always been fucked) and I think am a better person as a result. My friends that don't know about my usage comment on how much better a person I've become and how much more popular I am etc. I know it's not indefinitely sustainable but once life is good, it's like a snowball effect and I take regular 4-6 month breaks, especially when my life is not going so great and I need to reassess my situation.

I'm most definitely medicating something, but I don't know what it is. I was never happy my entire childhood (although I had an excellent family, I thought we were messed up until I looked at other peoples families), only once I started taking drugs did I become popular and with a few stuff ups here and there when I was younger, I learnt how to control and not be controlled.

Abuser fo' sho'

I'm a user when it comes to alcohol, weed and ecstasy.

I'm an abuser when it comes to opiates.

I'm an addict when it comes to meth and benzos.
