Glass pipes are alright but I don't know why everyone hates on metal pipes. I used to use a small, cheap and easily concealable metal pipe all the time and it was the bomb. You get used to it and learn how to draw huge hits from it and it is so easy to hide the pipe.
I don't find the taste too bad either, it isn't as good as glass and I don't mind the taste of marijuana smoke but seriously it isn't a gourmet meal and as long as you are getting high who gives a fuck.
Well, 1. metal doesn't taste as clean as glass.
2. Glass can have all kinds of cool designs all over it. They usually look a lot better than metal pipes.
3. Glass doesn't get near as hot as a metal pipe. Every metal pipe I've seen can only have 2-3 bowls smoked out of it in a row before it becomes too hot to handle. A nice thick glass bowl can be smoked out of all day long without getting too hot.
4. I find that glass is easier to clean. Metal pipes usually have all kinds of grooves for resin and shit to get stuck in. Granted, metal is easier to clean with a poker or something, get all that resin out and smoke it, but with glass, little rubbing alcohol and salt, and it's as beautiful as the day you bought it.
Metal bowls are cheap, pretty much why most kids start out using them. But glass is so much nicer. And when you start getting some really dank pot, you'll want to taste the pot more than the pipe, makes it a much nicer experience.
It's definitely worth it. Don't get sucked into the over-priced glass-on glass graduated cylinders.

What do you mean by over price glass on glass graduated cylinders? Granted, just by it self, glass on glass is a novelty, its cleaner than a normal bong, but nothing special. But when I think of glass on glass, you usually get a lot more than that. You usually get a percolator, or two, or three, a diffusing downstem, thick glass that will stand the test of time, and something that looks badass. I take it you haven't smoked out of a nice percolator bong, imo it's the best experience, better than vaporizers, and hundreds of times better than a normal bong. Sure you will shell out $200-300, but it's well worth it.
