I've seen several closed threads in the past by people who want to know if they have this condition. If you want to know, I obtained several pieces of info from school and the doctors office.

If you exhibit these symptoms, you may have a strong tendency toward ADHD:

Excessive hyperactivity (unable to sit still), as if "driven by a motor" (more commonly seen in children than adults).
Chronic inability to complete a task
Tendency to take on multiple tasks at once and rarely, if ever, get them done
Inability to retain information during lessons
Being easily distracted by unimportant occurences
Difficulty listening and following directions
Making careless mistakes
Acting on impulses that you know may get you in trouble
Talking too much--esp. at inappropriate times (again, more common with children)

MYTH:
ADHD is not a "real" disorder. It is often blown out of proportion.

TRUTH:
While it may be true that many children are misdiagnosed and drugged for no reason, ADHD indeed exists.
ADHD is a neurogical chemical imbalance, these chemicals being most accepted as norepinephrine and dopamine, chemicals that regulate our brain's focus, achievement and reward system. This has been confirmed by over 40 years of scientific research, but certain aspects of the disorder are still not fully understood.

MYTH:
Poor parenting, nutrition and schooling is often the cause of ADHD.

TRUTH:
ADHD has no "cause." It is a hereditary condition that you are born with. While stress associated with school and family can aggravate symptoms, it is most certainly not a cause.

MYTH:
Children can simply outgrow their ADHD.

TRUTH:
If you are accurately diagnosed with ADHD, it is a chronic condition that will impact your living for the rest of your life if medication and behavior therapy are not implemented.

Quick facts:
ADHD symptoms are most commonly kept under control with the use of stimulants. While these drugs are commonly abused because they create a powerful high (because of the copious amounts of dopamine it dumps into the brain), people with ADHD can benefit enormously from thrapeutic doses of these drugs. Common names for these drugs include methylphenidate (Ritalin, Methylin and generics) amphetamine salt compounds (Adderall and generics), single amphetamine isomer / salt--dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), Vyvanse (a unique form of dextroamphetamine), methamphetamine (Desoxyn), and dexmethylphenidate, a single-isomer form of methylphenidate (Focalin). There is currently only one non-stimulant drug approved to treat ADHD called Strattera (an antidepressant that works on on only norepinephrine but not dopamine, so there is no "high" associated with this drug). The exact reason for the calming effect of stimulants on ADHD patients is still not fully understood.
Your psychiatrist or GP may have you take a series of tests if you suspect you have ADHD. These tests involve simple yes or no questions and a more in-depth analysis.
If you believe you have ADHD, don't ask us Bluelighters. Go to the doctor if you exhibit 5 or more of these symptoms. Further testing will give you your answer.

Note: don't know if this is OD material, but I thought it was a much needed thread. I just didn't know where to post it. Mods do as you wish with it.

The MYTHs and TRUTHs are no such thing. There is no proof that shows ADHD is permanent, because there is no conscensus for what adult ADD is. So whilst it may be true that ADD "is a chronic condition that will impact your living for the rest of your life", it certainly is not proven, since ADD has only really been studied for 15-20 years.

I have just gone thru exams without my ADD meds, and I know I've done really well. So have I grown out of ADD? I think it's really dangerous to RX these meds to kids who "can't sit still" etc, b/c I honestly don't believe stimulants are the answer, as pharm companies will have you believe. I can tell you from experience, the stimulants may improve your attention, but it certainly doesn't help with common life skills, like thinking laterally, learning to plan etc etc

And again, I reiterate I have been diagnosed with ADD, so before anyone says I don't understand the issue, I do.

An ADHD diagnosis can be hell for a child, for sure. I grew up with a bunch that are in real difficult spots these days because of the trajectory their meds put them on at a really young age. Getting into my 20's stride I can see taking amphetamines regularly for an edge in school. I don't think I'd want a script though because if I made a really serious habit out of them tolerance would inflate and make the tool useless. We can't fight evolution. If it's a legitimate chemical imbalance it does seem that it's the majority of the population with it, not the minority and maybe we should just fucking run with it.

More importantly this thread is an awesome excuse to close any and all future threads even vaguely about ripping off doctors for amphetamines (unless we've got some troll narcoleptics). Bravo!

Djsim: sources? I know you are a med student so you know your shit but can you cite specific resources?
ingannilo: yes, thank you, I thought this thread was a great idea to put an end to all the pointless "Will my doc give me Adderall if I..." and such and such.

Here is your resource people! Thank me later.

By the way I have ADHD too and the Ritalin helps but I'd much rather work hard to overcome it myself. It can be done. Meds only mask symptoms, they don't cure.
But I agree with djsim in that a child who simply "can't sit still" should not be given stimulants. Myopinion is that ADHD is a mental disease, not a fidgeting disorder.

To understand him, you'll probably need to start thinking critically about what you've read.

Consider:
ADHD is a relative new condition. If it is a permanent chemical imbalance in people's brains, why didn't it show up throughout history? How do you explain the ambiguity of the idea of Adult ADHD? Did you know that throughout time the medical definition of what ADHD is has evolved and changed? Did you know that the idea of ADHD was originally created when doctors in a psych ward experimented with giving children stimulants and found that some were better behaved afterwards?

Do you find any of these statements ambiguous or interesting? Or do you immediately dispute them in your head? Do you think it is possible that you are 'looking' for ADHD to be the cause of your problems? I mean no offense. I only say this sh*t because I was diagnosed before, and these are elements of my life I'm sharing with you.

ADHD now is more of an umbrella for multiple disorders. Inattentive ADHD has little in common with the classic hyperactive variety and in reality isnt really a behavioural disorder. Its an attention disorder in the way that autism is a hand flapping disorder.

While the OP isnt innacurate it is a gross simplification of a horribly complicated topic.

A lot of your truths contain myths and some of your myths contain truths.
Also a number of incongruencies! I would not place much importance in this-but certainly one needs to have thorough tests-and early socialization and severe parenting does play a role! :\

i concur.

sometimes i feel like ADD/ADHD is a way to explain simple behaviors (which can easily be modified thru... behavior modification)

i think it's pretty horrible that anyone would want to give ADD/ADHD meds to a child. i mean these drugs are pretty hardcore, even for a lot of adults (myself not included, i have a high tolerance from heavy use). why the hell would you want to give them to a kid?

way too much faith is placed in ADD/ADHD diagnoses me thinks.

yeah! question is, what kind of tests are there that can truly be accurate? symptoms can easily be feigned! i know this from first hand experience! i tried adderall and decided i was going to fake an ADD diagnosis. my doctor gave me a bottle of 120x 10mg adderall xr and told me to work up my dose! this doc is well-respected psychiatrist, yet it was really easy to diagnose me based on the symptoms i gave.

basically ADD/ADHD drugs are handed out like candy to both adults and children ... and it's basically impossible to prove diagnoses.

maybe i'm just jaded!

adderalls make me stomach hurt, concerta is better....
desoxyn was totally not worth the hassle either....really expensive man....
wiz helps..lol

concerta made me feel like i was coming down off a roll 24/7...horrible...diff strokes diff folks tho!8o

Yah, well, once your doctor gives you questions that verifies that you may have it, he will place you under certain medications and check which ones work for you best, and which will indicate if he is on the right track, but also vehavior therapy etc.

Might find some of the links helpful

i guess i should tell you the reason i am so skeptical of these disorders. when i was 17 i went to the doc with every intention of faking through a diagnosis of ADD so i could get on adderall, and my plan worked and i have had access to a steady supply of scripts (if/when i want them) for the past 7 years.
i suppose there are a lot of mental disorders that people can fake to get meds, and my situation is no different, so maybe my opinion is more that i don't understand why better tests aren't developed to determine cases of mental diseases or disorders. i don't feel like there is solid enough evidence to be found to warrant some diagnoses and medications... attention disorders are grossly overdiagnosed (ESPECIALLY in kids) and that is a problem!

lol yeah i hate that feeling! i started taking celexa last year and i was literally out my box for 2 or 3 weeks while i got used to it. eeks i hate that feeling!!!8o

i should also say, to anyone who might come to this page for help, you should definitely do research and talk to a doc because you might really have a problem. i am not trying to discredit these disorders just questioning procedure. good luck
