Pet Peeves ver. Fjones vs Redleader

People who feel the need to drive like bats out of hell in the short climbing lane (75 mph+ in a 55) on a typically single lane road and then slam on their breaks and slow down to less than 55 mph as soon as the climbing lane ends.

It makes me want to become murderous!!

How incredibly difficult it is to use public transportation or even just walk/bike in the suburbs.

Buses don't run enough, have enough stops, etc.

Sidewalks for bikers and pedestrians randomly end early.

Everything is just so much more spread out in America. I lived in a big city in Australia for 2 years and walked/took public transport everywhere. It become second nature. And now that I am back in the states, I've tried walking a few places and it really is a mission just to get to a convenience store or a pizza place (I live in suburbia). So now I drive everywhere, and get peeved by the actions of other drivers.

People who ride bikes in the street, rather carelessly I will add, when there is most definately a SIDEWALK.

You know why it's called a sidewalk right? In my city you can get a ticket for riding your bike on the sidewalk. A bicycle is a vehicle. I will agree with you on careless, asshole bikers though.

yeah, a lot of places ticket for that; even small towns. not only that, but sidewalks can just all the sudden drop down with stairs, but you don't see streets doing that.

lol. That argument makes zero sense.

Frankly it is downright stupid to ride a bike on the sidewalk here in Chicago. You never know who is coming around the corner of a building, out of a shop, someone pulling out of an alley, not to mention the sidewalks are not built to accommodate bikes and pedestrians. They are not painting bike lanes on the roads for fun.

People telling me what I like.

kc: Mom, can you pick me up a 2 liter of Pepsi while you are at the store? Thanks.

Mom: (pulling Coke out of the bag) I got you Coke. You like Coke.

kc: I asked for Pepsi though.

Mom: You like Coke.

Oh, yes. I forgot 8)

Cyclist hits a pedestrian, both are roughly equally hurt. Car hits a cyclist, the biker gets messed up and the car gets scratched. Sidewalk collisions are far less severe than road collisions. But then again, I'm speaking from the standpoint of a regular cyclist and an at most occasional driver. If I never rode my bike, I'd probably have a different opinion.

I'll ride exclusively like a car when I get treated exclusively with the same courtesy that cars do. Otherwise I'll ride where it's safest. Sometimes that's on the street, sometimes it's on sidewalks; but only where it is posted as legal to do so-- I don't generally ride on sidewalks when it's illegal to do so. My safety is more important than adhering to the letter of the law.

I understand that this is a polarizing argument. Let me ask this: those who are so against bikers riding on sidewalks, how many of you have commuted exclusively by bike for more than a week or two at a stretch? Walk a mile in the other camp's shoes, get clipped a few times, and see how riding on the sidewalk on occasion might be a bit more attractive.

lol Redleader I think you are my new favorite "love to hate" bler

Fjones stood down, heck someone's got to step up :)

I live in Ohio. Obviously it's less dangerous to ride a bike on a sidewalk here (suburbia Ohio) than in Chicago, and I don't think there should be uniform laws.

From the Ohio Bicycle Traffic Laws

§ 4511.711. Driving upon sidewalk area.
No person shall drive any vehicle, other than a bicycle, upon a sidewalk or sidewalk area except upon a permanent or duly authorized temporary driveway.

Nothing in this section shall be construed as prohibiting local authorities from regulating the operation of bicycles within their respective jurisdictions, except that no local authority may require that bicycles be operated on sidewalks.

Now I am not about to give my specific jurisdiction (haha though Finder could pull my ISP 8o ), but it took me a good half hour to figure out that it's LEGAL here (but not a rule).

I stand by my Peeve. If someone follows the traffic laws on a bike and rides responsibly, then that's one thing. I'm talking more about when I'm making my midnight taco bell run through the suburbs, and some 14 year old kid is doing zig-zags across the street on one of those tricked up bikes. Even 25mph and 0.00BAC ain't going to necessarily keep that kid safe.

So I get paranoid, and start seeing imaginary kids on bikes, ready to zoom out in front of me. Kind of like how after I had a few close calls with deer, I see them on the sides of the roads when they likely aren't even there.

Well put. Irresponsible cyclists are a pain in the ass for everyone.

Where I live it is strictly illegal to ride on sidewalks, except where it is posted that the sidewalk is designated as a bike route. Usually in that case the path is a bit wider. But the law isn't really enforced all that much.

Redleader: I went through a shrimp alfraedo phase when I was 15, ya.

Mom: So you like shirmp alfraedo.

Redleader: Yes, your'e right. I'll get shrimp alfraedo.

^^ I'm trying not to think about the fact that my mom will be here visiting me in less than a week--you guys are not helping with your "mom knows best what you like" peeves :)

I'm sure I'll have plenty more to contribute come next Tuesday!

I think that has to do with accents...in the Midwest, they are pronounced the same.

Sying "Are you coming to "hour" house?" sounds funny to me.

Is that the pronounciation you prefer people use?
