Judging from the photo contest, quite a few of you have digital cameras. Many (not all unfortunately) have an option to record short videos as well. Use this feature! See an interesting scene? Film it! Use your photography skills and apply them to moving pictures as well.

Interesting images in terms of the angle used, lighting, perspective, and composition can gain a new aspect when motion is introduced as a factor. Films don't necessarily have to have a plot or characters, but can simply be a photo taken to the next step.

Of course, if you feel inclined to make a short film with characters and such, that would be great to see too. That is a lot of work though.

Even short clips of yourself drunk or something is all good. That might be a different thread, but who is to say what is "art" and what isn't. I saw an installation at MOPA in San Diego that was just videos some woman took with her camera phone of people riding the subway and such, so have at it!

You can host your videos on:

You Tube (duh) and Photobucket.

There are many other free hosting sites out there as well.

Do et!

I, of course, already made one. ;)

It is less than a minute, and it took me less than an hour to film, edit, and host. Not much work at all, don't be scurred! Windows sometimes comes packaged with a film editing program, and Adobe Premiere is floating around out there as well. If anyone wants to edit their film but can't find the appropriate software, you can PM me and I am sure we can find some sort of solution for you. :)

Anyway, without further ado, on to my feature presentation...

^^ yeah, thats fine if you don't like it, just try to explain why. thanks for the comment anyway I guess. I just want the thread to grow and some more people to make entries. :D

Thank you too SA :)

I only have one video piece that i've done. i think i have the tape somewhere but no adaptor and no digital file :( it was a play with fire, abstraction and an aphex twin song.

Idea:

When you go out to a bar or club or whatever, instead of taking pictures, take video!

Shoot footage of people dancing, or on drugs, or having a good time at the bar. Shoot people talking and flirting etc. Take shots from the backseat of a car, on the bus, at a train station. Shoot video while you walk down the sidewalk.

Just keep an eye on what you are doing with the camera, try to frame things in an interesting way, and take lots of footage. It's not like it costs anything to develop if you have a digital camera.

Later, take all the video you shot and edit it down and link it up. Instant film. In fact, a story or theme might emerge without you even having planned it.

Not a lot of work at all. :)

And I think you would be surprised with how good it can turn out.

Quick question: what video editors are people using? I've tried a couple (just shareware so far), and they all like to crash. A lot.

Oh, and cool idea pennywise. I just got a new puppy, and instead of sending pics I'm trying to collate a short movie. But I'd like to try something a little more artful down the line.

Video editing takes a lot of processing power. What kind of machine do you have?

It's a bit older. Dual P4 at 3.0 Ghz, 1.5 gig ram, nvidia Gfx 5600 (128 MB), running XP.
