Pluto is 30-50 AU from the Sun, depending on where it is in its orbit. 1 AU = the distance between Earth and the Sun. At the speed of light, it could take you up to 7 hours to get to Pluto. At it's farthest from Earth, it's over 7 billion kilometers (4+ billion miles) away. It took nine years for this image data to be transmitted back to Earth. I find this mind boggling.
Pluto receives 1/900 to 1/2500 the sunlight that Earth does, so it is a dim world. It still receives light however, and NASA's camera no doubt was very sensitive and also used long exposures.
