US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

Shame about the maga federal workers begging Elon for their jobs back. I guess they forgot voting has consequences. Lol

It IS interesting how disconnected voters are from even recent history. I understand that there was the longest US government shutdown in 2019. It's my understanding that it lasted 35 days before Donald Trump was forced to back down and before this term promised to 'do the job'.

I'm not a political analyst but word did reach the UK. Maybe it's easier to view things with a certain amount of dispassion if it's another nation?

I previously noted that the defintion of 'good' and 'bad' government spending appears to depend on what the public response is. Which is interesting - IF Donald Trump still feels the need to listen to at least some feedback from the US electorate, I admit, I am a little surprised.

hey stranger. been a while :)

i hate to see anybody lose their job - or feel economic, emotional or other pain - as a result of what's happening with trump, musk and doge.

but it's really hard to conjure up any sympathy for them if they voted for trump. "i thought it would be somebody else!" well, be careful what you wish for, right?

some trumpers won't change their support for any reason. but maybe some who have been impacted personally in this way will finally think about it now.

i have a friend who is devastated from losing her govt. job recently, she had a perfect work record and was fired for her 'performance'. his net worth is about 7 million times her annual salary. what a crock of shit.

alasdair

I would consider the above to be an example of Враньо (vranyo) i.e. everyone knows it's not true except possibly the hardcore MAGA who don't understand cause and effect.

I'm in no way a fan of how modern trading is conducted but share values are based on future projections of the performance of said shares. So imposing tarriffs that will simply result in retliatory tariffs hurts anyone ouside the US who seeks to import, and andone in the US who seeks to export. The fact that there have been so many sudden changes in the specific tarriffs threatened, people don't know if, in a week or a month, those numbers might be altered. Uncertainty is what traders hate.

As a friend mentioned a few days ago. He intends to short a whole bunch of shares and thus profit from the fall in value. Just because there is a stock-market goes down doesn't prevent people from profiting. I believe it's termed 'ctastrcanomics' although I may well have spelt that incorrectly.

Human and Civil Rights are obviously void when the person is an "illegal alien":

Trump admin accidentally sent Maryland father to Salvadorian mega-prison and says it can’t get him back

But obviously the man deported was a huge criminal, involved in lots of rapes, murders, and gang activity right?

JD Vance Suggests Migrant Deported In Error Was A Bad Person Due To Traffic Violations

I wish only the worst for JD Vance's political career, Donald Trump, and only the best for Kilmar Abrego Garcia. I don't know. I guess the same country that accidentally releases accused killers due to "administrative error" has no better luck with immigrants. Well, darn:

Murder suspect accidentally released from jail in Indiana as police keep quiet for 6 days

Many of these folks are not even claimed to be undocumented by the govt. However, even undocumented ("illegals") aliens have some rights under the Constitution. The most basic and obvious is due process. Think about it. Of course the govt would have to prove they are undocumented before proceeding any further. Then, yes, they would have to prove any other crimes before proceeding on the basis of those crimes.

It's my understanding that the US round of tarriffs begin on April 9th.

Now that's a little odd for Donald Trump as he has in the past announced immediate tarriffs. So are we seeing the current US government 'testing the water' to see what the announced tarriffs DO before they kick in?

Let's not forget that we have see hom row back on some significant internal issues when unintended consequences became apparent.

So it may be a matter of US businesses reporting on how much tarriffs will impact their own costs. Because these days, complex products are often made from components sourced in many nations.

On a more personal note - the UK now faces baseline tarriffs of 10% whereas the EU faces 20%. Well, there is no physical boarder between The Republic of Ireland (Éire) and Northern Ireland - part of the UK. So one can well imagine products made in Éire simply being shipped from the UK. That permiable boarder was, in my estimation, a conscious decision to provide for the UK still trading within the EU but I suppose HGVs and goods trains go in both directions.

BTW another term I feel germaine to that list of terms I attempted to float:

Legislative activism

Now the definition of this varies hugely depending on who you ask. Even the definition preferred by the current US government has subjective elements. But the important thing is that it seeks to force judges to refer cases back to lower courts or to the Senate.

Coming from a nation where the Statute of Marlborough, laws enacted in 1267 are still in action. I feel it important to note that the very English language has changed HUGELY since it was enacted so if it were to be used in a trial, I suggest it would require modern interpretation. It's only since the age of movable type that any manner of 'standard' English began to be formed and later still before Samual Johnson published the first dictionary in 1775. So purely on that basis, old laws will always be subject to interpretation.

But what I draw parallels from is the way Julius Ceaser had the Roman senate alter what on the face of it was a minor change in the rights of the Tribune of the Plebs. Cicero noted that nobody understood WHAT that change could do. In essence, pardon anyone found guilty BY the Senate. That done JC was in a position to promise corrupt consuls that if they were corrupt, in exchange for a financial reward, he, JC, could get them pardoned. I'm not saying it's the same, but that only legal experts can really know if a definition is possible and if so, what that definition could mean.

You guys missed me didn't you? Lol

Cynicism aside I don't really jump for joy about people losing their jobs but I can't help but feel like there's some sort of universal karma going on there. I think that a lot of times people really only respond to pain so I guess maybe I'm also hoping that besides suffering along with everyone else it might help push things in a different direction. Then again that might be high hopes when talking about the ultra magas because they're so brainwashed. Trump could probably punch them in the balls himself and they'd find someone else to blame. I think there's definitely some parallels between the Trump supporters and Kim Jong supporters.

And all of this is coming from someone who supported Trump in the not too distant past. But I've since completely done a 180. Lol Trump doesn't care about the constitution, democracy or freedom as far as I can tell. He's capitalized on how far the left has pushed things and told people who were fed up with Biden and the like what they wanted to hear. I still think the Democrats sort of screwed themselves by not having a better choice. JMO

I part of me thinks the democrats could be in on this and have purposely faked their epic failure in order to hand their country over to mega corporations/billionaires to enslave Americans into being so desperate they work for nothing but rice (this is what the Trump admin/elon/JDs owners are doing regardless)

Their failure was such a display of incompetence and tone deafness I can’t believe it was even real. It seems like they are gonna do it again too.

Democrats have been in shock and almost comatose, kind of scary. In the meantime our country is being destroyed with a jackhammer.

I respect JB Pritzker, though, for not just sitting on his hands. And Cory Booker for making that marathon speech! How did he not pee for 25 hours???? Hard on the kidneys!

I'm pretty sure what the orange goblin and the chainsaw wielding one are intent on doing is privatizing everything. I'm not even convinced that it's about finding government waste, at least not as the end goal tbh. I think it's more like use government waste as a reason to say something needs to be privatized, and once they do that if they get that far the commoners are fucked even more.

100%
These govt agencies are fruit they've wanted to pick and sell to the highest bidder for a while. Repugs have talked about privatizing SS and Medicare for years but it's been the third rail of politics. Trump likely figures he can chaos monkey his way into doing that as well.

It's in Project 2025. As are a few things we are in the thick of right now.
  • Replace merit-based civil service workers with loyal appointees.
  • Abolish the Department of Education and cut federal education funding.
  • Reduce corporate taxes and implement a flat income tax.
  • Cut Medicare and Medicaid funding.
  • Roll back environmental regulations to favor fossil fuels.
  • Implement stricter immigration policies, including mass deportations.
  • Weaken labor unions and worker protections.
  • Allow minors to work in hazardous jobs without parental consent.

There are states doing that last one right now.

Dems suck. I often wonder if they are not paid to lose as was mentioned ^^
However, I'm feeling pissy today so I'll mention that many Dems are kinda saying FAFO right now. It was about Democracy and it was about Project 2025
(dons flame suit)
