US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

If he's really trying to take Canada it won't happen. I haven't seen Canadians this United in a long time.
My wife is Canadian and I hate that big mouth diaper bag is posturing just like with the Mexico border wall. Canada gets my apologies and in reality if there was a war (year right) most Americans would fight with Canada. I see that on the reddit boards from the border states.

The issue I see though is half of Canada would vote trump too. They hate Trudeau and all the liberal stuff. And I have to say I understand Canada has a better argument. Ontario has so many immigrants I see it stress the system badly. My wife hates trump, but her two bothers, their wives and some of their trucker friends (that clogged Toronto) in Canada said they would vote trump. Her two parents friends who are in the 80's said they would vote trump, not Kamala. So this sickness (and selfishness) runs deep. And what irritates me is people from the other side of the world that say they would vote trump. Like ok you can have him. And don't get me started on Kevin O'Leary or Wayne Gretsky that fuel this nonsense.

It won't last. trump made a deal with the devil and now it is just sands through the hourglass and the devil awaits. Swing down sweet chariot....

I never got the Trump thing at all and thankfully most my family feels the same way. I find it astonishing that anyone in Canada would like him though, he has been so insulting.

He is going to run our country into the ground and only the rich will benefit. I hope people wake up quickly, I'm afraid permanent damage has already been done and it's only been 6 weeks! 😳

I had a new couple in therapy today whose presenting issue is that they voted differently in the election and it's been causing them problems as a result. Was actually really sad to see a loving couple who seem really great for one another, super supportive of each other etc, but because the impact of the election has lead to some fighting and could lead to them breaking up. I'm going to do my best to help support them, they seem like nice kids, and it sucks that they are in a position where because of all of the emotional manipulation going on, politics is getting in the way of love.

It's so fucking shitty the way that this stuff happens - the propaganda that is used to create and maintain power has this broad downstream effect that preys upon the emotions and suffering of all of us. It's the kind of injustice that no one will ever be held accountable for or take responsibility for, but there are so many people who get hurt because of fallout of political propaganda.

Absolutely! This has really torn people apart. I hope they can work it out.

The interesting thing is that a 2016 investigation confirmed that the internet propaganda emerging at that time and developing into q anon and pizza gate and then taking shape a la trump was most definitely from Russian state actor troll farms.

The trump people don’t even care anymore. For once they don’t feel stupid because everyone in their world agrees. The propaganda appeals to the lowest denominator which is apparently hatred of all things foreign. Foreign propaganda is just dank memes tho no problem there

It really appears this is true but the odd thing is the people I know who are Trump supporters really aren't like that. I've tried to understand it but it's confusing. They go along with everything Fox news says but don't appear to dislike anyone foreign, and the ones I know aren't racist, or even stupid.

Maybe some are naive as to how much harm is really being done? In my opinion it's extremely toxic. I do know they believe the economy will improve though. They are in for a rude awakening.

In the break room at Work Place I heard a lady, middle aged older white lady, talking to her four phillipino coworker friends by the sound of it about how trump was going to get rid of the murderer and rapist foreigners but not the good people so they didn’t need to be worried.

Legit putting their fears to rest by saying trump will
Make it better. The sheer vapidity. I could feel every brain cell in my body trying to make sense of how she could be so socially clueless and yet a total true believer.

it surely is sad and i expect it's happening a fair bit these days.

i'm fascinated by the extent to which it's just 'politics' and the extent to which ones core personality traits inform ones politics. for example, are some people naturally collectivists and some naturally individualists? and wouldn't that tend to make their politics evolve left and right respectively.

i've heard that "it's our similarities that bring us together but it's (respect for) our differences that keep us together" and i think there is truth to that.

but sure, just as there are some fundamental issues on which a couple have to agree to succeed long term (e.g. whether to have children), there have to be fundamental traits and, from there, political beliefs on which a couple have to find some common ground, no?

interested in your professional take.

I have heard people making similar comments. It is hard to fathom how anyone could miss all the red flags and fall hook line and sinker for his bullshit.

Who could possibly believe he is going to only get rid of the "bad" people?? The thing is they aren't really this stupid though. They know better. They must think something is in it for them.

I don't really like Trump, never did. But Trumps overwhelming victory, and the Republican's takeover of Congress can be explained by one simple fact: Moderates like me have become 100% dissatisfied with the modern Democrat party. I was a Democrat for more than 50 years...even voted for Obama his first term.

But the Democrats have become so out of touch with normal Americans (especially working families) that we are fed up. All the party represents is extreme special interests, like obese people, LGBT, MLM, single moms.

I already am unhappy with many of Trump's policies...high quality Mexican made boots are going to cost me 25% more. But the Democrat party cost my family more than $25k in extra food costs over the last 4 years.

it's no secret that the economy - and in particular high grocery prices - were a successful campaign issue for trump.

according to a survey in october and november 2024 by "ap votecast", 96% of voters said “high prices for gas, groceries and other goods” factored in to how they cast their ballots.

the trump campaign used the issue. a lot.

"Grocery prices have skyrocketed; how can a family afford that? So, when I win, I will immediately bring prices down," (trump press conference, new jersey, august 15th 2024, my emphasis)

"PRICES ARE TOO HIGH! THE CONSUMER IS ANGRY AT THIS INCOMPETENT ADMINISTRATION. KAMALA HAS NO IDEA HOW TO BRING PRICES DOWN. SHE IS AFRAID TO EVEN DISCUSS IT WITH THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA. EVEN WORSE THAN HER V.P. CANDIDATE, SHE DOESN’T EVEN HAVE A CLUE….BUT I DO, AND IT WILL HAPPEN FAST!" (trump post on truth social, october 3rd 2024, my emphasis)

A vote for Trump means your groceries will be cheaper.” (trump rally, november 4th 2024)

et. al.

and since the election? he's not even in office yet and he's already walking back these promises:

Trump now says bringing down grocery prices, as he promised, will be 'very hard'

"President-elect Donald Trump campaigned relentlessly on grocery prices in the 2024 race, vowing to bring down costs quickly for American families if given four more years in the White House.

But in an interview with Time in conjunction with being named the magazine's "Person of the Year," Trump now says doing that will be a "very hard" task.

Trump was asked if his presidency would be considered a "failure" if he didn't deliver on his promise to slash Americans' food bills.

"I don't think so. Look, they got them up," referring to the Biden-Harris administration. "I'd like to bring them down. It's hard to bring things down once they're up. You know, it's very hard," Trump said.
"

i guess he's working hard on ending the war in ukraine which he promised to do before he even took office. he's got 35 days.

ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

Much of the economy is out of a president's control. There were many inflationary forces, but Democrat economic policy directly worsened inflation, specifically it cause the tremendous explosion in domestic food prices.

The Build Back Better Act was passed just as the economy was recovering. It dumped trillions of dollars (used to buy votes) into an already overheating economy. So we had a situation of lots of money and limited resources that massively worsened food prices. The Democrat party cost my family more than $25k in extra food costs over the last 4 years.

Having said that, Trump is not helping costs. I am a lover of quality cowboy boots, some of the best are made in Leon Mexico. Trump's 25% tariff are going to spike boot prices.

I think we can agree that so far Donald Trump's leadership appears to demonstrate that he doesn't understand how US law works, how intenrational trade works or how inflation works.

Others have pointed out what a short honeymoon it's been, but must US presidents have explored the outcomes of any legislation ot executive orders they institute on taking power. It appears that NOBODY was privy to Donald Trump's thoughts.

Whatever happens from now, that lack of judgement is only going to reduce investment in the US and make other world leaders less willing to listen to the US.

As for 'strategic digital reserve'. Wow - and here's every other nation acting like mugs by keeping financial reserves such as gold or other assets with low volatility and high liquidity. If the US buys crypto in bulk, they will crash the value of that crypto if they ever try to asset the funds stored in it.

People really have amnesia as to how bad things were during Covid. I think they want to forget. The stimulus checks (with an "s") were needed to keep us from recession. The first two were from Trump and he even signed one of them real big. The whole world had inflation and we pulled out more quickly and our general economy faired much better.

Preventing a recession without inflation is a tightrope. When we got the last stimulus check the news was all over about how much better things were for workers and how pay was going up and people were improving their lot in jobs as they went back to work. We tipped into inflation. Sure, having there be more pain for people trying to go back to work and pay their bills might have prevented it.

So, it's a tightrope. We could argue all day about whether that last check was just one too many and that we needed a little pain to have an economy with less inflation. However, one thing is true and can't be argued. That last bit of stimulus was not bad in what the policy was so much as it might have been bad in the degree of the application of that policy.

Another thing which really can't be argued is that the economy had been stable for some time at the 2024 election. All numbers were good, as they had been, and inflation had only been slightly high for nearly two years.

So, Trump was handed a good economy, the past of that economy aside. If the economy tanks now, it's not a matter of applying too much stimulus and not accepting enough pain.

It's 100% mismanagement on his part.

I think alot of that trump support is because he was talking about working for his country when we had a government making us feel like racist for saying we don't have the infrastructure for mass migration or adding taxes. I was never a fan of Trudeau but I would pick him any day over trump.

Now I noticed trump is trying to use his tariffs as an excuse Trudeau is using to stay in power. He's already resigned though. I was actually proud of how Trudeau stood up for us.

Now we're looking at building more in Canada and having Canadian companies drilling for our minerals. For our natural resources we should be more self efficient.

Either way trump has done damage. We always trusted the USA but not so much now.

Doug Ford(the premier of Ontario) would have shut your lights off if people didn't stop him. We don't pay no mind to the Geneva convention during war.(joke)

I can only find liberal sources reporting on this. How can Musk ensure the show was not edited? I can understand his wariness given how much mainstream media edits and twists information.

Dood. It's on The Hill.
If he thinks the show is edited after he does it, he says so.
