Disclaimer: I am not proclaiming to be a self-appointed arbiter of taste. Your questionable music preferences are your own. This is primarily a fun way to give artists a chance again or discover new tunes with what one perceives as convincingly their best song.

The Process:

  • One artist, one song, one shot
  • Previous biases checked at the door
  • Failed to impress before? Redemption arc time
  • New to me? Let's see what you've got
The Verdict:
At the very least, I will indicate that I'm "convinced" or "not convinced," though I will happily elaborate if requested. Possible outcomes:
  • Convinced: Well, would you look at that
  • Not Convinced: Thanks, I hate it
Fine Print:
  • All opinions are served hot but meant to be taken room temperature
  • Your mileage may vary
  • No artists were harmed in the making of these reviews (probably)
Remember: This is just one person's attempt to find good music in questionable places. Take what resonates, leave what doesn't.

Do you have a short list of bands or genres etc that might be a good starting point? I feel like we overlap a lot in our taste so I might be preaching to the choir on a lot of stuff.

I find myself quite disconnected from contemporary music trends, which perhaps offers an opening. For potential overlapping musical interests, ADTR and similar artists come to mind, though I never particularly resonated with their style — "brocore" or whatever. I appreciate there may be value there, but it hasn't been an area of meaningful engagement for me.

I guess I'll go first

Convinced. I know Joseph Arthur. Great song. A Smile That Explodes has great emotional depth, and may be my favorite of his.

Here's an old one. You've probably heard this one before.

Convinced! Never heard this, but I'm a fan of its droning elements. The guitar work is legit. The textural density is somewhat reminiscent of Blue Cheer.

Here's an Japanese Band from 1971 called Sadistic Mika Band - The song is called Time Machine Ni Onenai

Not convinced. I appreciate several elements of the composition and find the Yukihiro Takahashi connection intriguing, given my appreciation for YMO. I may have to break my rule and give this further exploration.

this guy i met once when i was still living in germany (he was a friend of a friend).
unfortunately he died last year.
this song was covered recently by danish artist leaether strip, but the original long version is the best (the kid's voice is his kid's)

I have no idea if you're a fan or not-- if you don't like ADTR at all, I would guess signs point to no. Still, you've probably heard this track before. I considered a more obscure song but landed on this.

Not convinced. Industrial's always been hit or miss for me. I wanted to dig this one, and I've got to admit, hearing the artist's kid on there was a pretty neat moment. But overall, I'm just not fully sold.

Convinced! Define the Great Line is quite possibly my favorite album from their catalogue. :multicolorheadbang:

i see mysterier post some emo stuff sometimes if i'm not mistaken... this will be my contribution to the thread to see if he or any one else can get into this dude... he's kind of got a different style than emo and just kind of a unique vibe in general:

edit: this is not emo... i'm just interested in mysterier because i thought he was posting some emo with another poster in a couple threads.. i think this music would actually be indie... if anybody else doesn't like it or likes it, i'd also be interested. it might be kind of boring and weird. idk, but i think it's super talented.

I feel like this is kind of like Win Ben Stein's Money only we're just playing for @Mysterier 's respect.

Mys, idk your thoughts on mainstream pop stars. Obviously we're both more into other stuff, but I can't help but to sometimes be blown away by Adele or Lady Gaga, etc. definitely some songs moreso than others. I again tried picking one that maybe you haven't heard. Love the lighting and vibe of the video as well, but the lyrics really hit home for me.

It says the video isn't available. :(

nice idea for a thread @Mysterier

the artist: primal scream
the song: loaded

convinced?

alasdair

Not convinced. You know, I recall your posting about Primal Scream around 15-20 years ago, and I believe I've heard songs here and there, but continue to find myself feeling a bit ambivalent. There are positive aspects to it, but it remains just beyond the periphery of my tastes.

Convinced. While certain aspects leave me wanting, her voice and its emotional depths prove absolutely magnetic.

Convinced. I've caught bits of their stuff here and there over the years, but this one really hits.
