always been curious to know exactly what taking exogenous melatonin feels like so any personal experiences would be much appreciated.
I wouldn’t say my sleep is fantasticly optimised, but if I stick to a good routine and keep myself busy in the day then I generally get a good sleep. so I’m not planning on taking melatonin as a medicine or long-term, but i’m really curious about trying a one off large dose just to see how it would affect my mood and behaviour whilst awake.

I've definitely experienced sleepy help from melatonin. Subtle, yeah. But for me, noticable. That was from 4mg. 2mg and 6mg seemed to do nothing though, so it seems pretty random.

A family member who has just returned from a dfferent timezone today claimed that 4 days of 6mg melatonin had helped with sleep and resetting circadian rhythm.

From all your responses here and what I’ve heard elsewhere, melatonin seems to be pretty weak to insignificant as a sedative. that actually makes sense given that melatonin is a circadian regulator and begins to be released long before bedtime. as opposed to other neurotransmitters, I think its job is to work in the background, slowly modulating other neurotransmitters thus preparing the brain for optimal sleep.
Apparently, excess melatonin production in the winter months could be one possible mechanism behind seasonal affective disorder. not sure if that’s been proven, but I think it’s possible given that depressed mood can be a side effect of melatonin supplementation. melatonin can suppress the actions of serotonin and more importantly dopamine which explain many of its biological and therapeutic functions, as well as it’s proposed causative role in SAD.

I know someone taking high dose melatonin (edit: 60mg twice a day) and they don't feel any effects. It doesn't even make you feel tired unless you're sitting in a dark room.

That’s a lot of melatonin. i’m sure that can’t be good in the long-term, plus I assume it would suppress endogenous production.
Did they report any side-effects like depression?

I don't imagine the effects of long term high doses of melatonin has been studied in any meaningful way. This person has been doing it for about a year and a half.

No. Perhaps ironically, they don't sleep well, but they weren't sleeping well before the melatonin either.

During the time Melatonin was scheduled allowing only dosage's max 0.1 mg. The brand I bought contained 3 mg, it went from OTC to under the counter.

These pilll's, assuming they contained Melatonin as it was a branded sealed bottle. During the end of a comedown of MDMA 9mg/ 3 pill's caused serious sleep induction and beautiful vivid dream's. Not only I but other's experienced this also.

Not like the Melatonin available these day's so I wonder still about it. Atm 0.299 mg is max allowed OTC.

What is it you find so bad about it?
The constant waking every few minutes with the weird "dreams" in between.
I only had a brief research into it maybe it was the dose, idk. From what I have read doses are below a mg but what I had were OTC and think they were 3 or 5mg? Even tried the crush and separate to lower dose but same.

If I use it once in great while, a very large dose will assist in me sleeping, but then again, I usually take it when I haven't slept in over 24 hours and I have Valium and benadryl in me also. Normal dose nothing. Not tired with large dose, nothing. Maybe a placebo effect or potentiates other drugs, or nothing.

always been curious to know...
I've noticed that the effects of melatonin vary widely (and wildly!) between iindividuals. Some report feeling absolutely nothing, some swear by it, some hate it, and some like it at first but build a high tolerance very quickly.

I take between 3mg and 10mg every evening, depending on how quickly I want to fall asleep. No, it doesn't knock me out nor will it overcome the effects of stimulants. But it does make me a little drowsy and helps me drift off to sleep sooner.

What I like most about it is that, for me, it induces vivid dreaming. Some people report nightmares, but I very rarely have bad dreams and even then they usually resolve somehow before I wake up. My dreams are crazy, colorful, complicated, lengthy, often amusing, and always quite fascinating.

Every night it's as if I drop acid and proceed to watch a bizarre movie in which I will participate. It's a blast!

So I take modafinil in the morning almost everyday from modafinia because of my work and sometimes I am unable to sleep in the nights so I take melatonin to ease out sometimes. It works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't but overall it helps majorly.

I started taking 9mg 9pm to 11pm yesterday and it really just makes me sleep longer perioids at once.
