2024 US Presidential Election

“Now if everyone would just smoke CBD and lift weights this country would be a lot better off; Mr Trump. Do you agree?”
LOL, god that is just so damn accurate.

Oh there's a debate happening? Damn, that's mad.

I'll try to refrain from commenting on the actual candidates too much except to say that I don't really get the focus on Biden's shortcomings, yeah he's an octogenarian who fumbles his words and is kinda old man clumsy now and then, in an ideal world you'd want someone else obviously but when we're talking about the reality of the situation, you've got a bumbly old guy on one side and... an existential threat to the future of the human species on the other. I would literally take the most decrepit, Alzheimer's ridden, bedbound, literally on-death's-door 120 year old who was kicked in the head by an elephant as a baby and thus never learned to properly talk - from like, the worst, ideally third world, most derelict, neglected nursing home I could find - or maybe just out of a dumpster somewhere - and elect him (or her) over that other damned totally morally bankrupt maniac and fully expect that the next 4 years in 'Murica would be far from perfect but without a shadow of a doubt better than the alternative.

Oops OK so I kinda failed at not commenting on the candidates but whatever. What I actually wanted to say was I really don't think debates are a very good way to judge anything... they're pure theatre. Debating is a skill that has little relation to the objective sense behind the arguments put forth by the participants. If it was to be a proper debate, you wouldn't have it be between individuals, in a short session, like a fucking boxing match or something, everyone trying to get that clever sounding jab in that actually means nothing, but makes a nice soundbite or tiktok clip, while tripping up their opponent in a way that doesn't really demonstrate anything but - again - can be chopped up and talked about endlessly by the kind of people who love to bang on about that kinda shit, ie, politicians and political aligned media institutions, and it's not a both sides thing, let's be honest, one side is just clearly eviller and dumber. Although that said, both sides do do all the stuff I just said, to an extent, because that's politics... and how fucked up the world is right now.

A real debate would be between teams of carefully chosen experts in a range of relevant fields, it would span multiple sessions, internet access would be a given as well as teams of runners to go dig up whatever other book or study from whatever dusty archive, it would be boring AF most of the time, there'd be many breaks if either side actually made a new and compelling argument for a fairly new idea while both teams researched and discussed it amongst themselves... and by the end of it you would have a fully documented and recorded evolution of a smartly argued discussion about what policies are genuinely best for the future of humanity, reasoned to a certainty with little room for dispute from anyone except the truly deranged.

It goes without saying that this kind of debate would immediately exclude large swathes of the current political elite because it requires critical thinking skills, a sense of ethics, and a sharp mind, a combination of traits which is not possessed by 99% of the current political class, as far as I can tell.

Debates arranged like sport do have a place, probably, in the world of podcasts and such, between individuals who won't on their own actually have much power to enforce their worldview on everyone else... but not to decide the future leader of an entire country...

^ lol. This is a better place to ask, what national poll should I be taking the most serious? There are sooo many, perhaps a meta-analysis poll? (if that even makes sense my definition of meta is still developing lol) Who has the gold standard though?

Yea I do not understand the focus on Bidens shortcomings either. He isn't a perfect candidate by any means but we are comparison shopping here right?

He won't be in prison or encouraging people to inject bleach (I am glad biden caught that and harped on it) .... he isn't in such a vulnerable spot he could be purchased by enemies "both domestic and foreign" (always wanted to say that srry), uhh he isnt threatening to kill his opponents, he still uses the classic national anthem. (Trump opens every rally with the JAN 6th Prisoner Anthem, seems directly anti america but ok), his wife DEFINITELY isn't KGB (not saying melania is), he didn't appoint his family to all the crucial positions.......Oh yea and he never tried directly to overthrow democracy. Not to mention the racism, the many raped women, killing roe v wade, blowing UN and NATO off on a couple occasions....

But to be fair, Biden's son did cocaine and purchased a firearm. Agreed to a plea deal and somehow it got pulled out from under him... you know how pissed Id be if I accepted a plea bargain and they didn't hold there end up (its unheard of??) ..... So ya know tomatoe tomato? TF??? How stupid

In the UK that's just another day ...
Personally I'm not bothered about the voting, this country is a basket case and it will take more than an election to change direction.

What does concern me though, is the comments of MP Andrew Bridgen a week or so ago. In an interview he stated that 'Rishi wants out' because 'he doesn't want to be a wartime PM', and that they are going to announce to the public in the coming months that we are now at war with Russia (he said technically we already are).

The WHO Pandemic treaty is supposed to be signed off too, and there's murmurs about bird flu.

Something stinks.

Well, it does look like the UK will likely swing to the Labor Party, so there's always that.
I don't know what's going to happen in UK ... Very likely very few people actually do.
I'm good with that 👍

Dont ya'll have like a king? What does a president do when there is a monarchy? Yes I am aware my ignorance is showing.

im glad im not the only one who hates hiss princess murdering ass... (you know she had a note with her lawyers saying if she dies suddenly she highly suspected ol chuck.)

So you guys got a king and a president? Hows that work; real question.

We have a Prime Minister, a House of Commons (lower house) full of MP's from the political parties (and a representative from the City of London corporation that never gets talked about), a House of Lords (upper house) full of gravy train appointees and coffin dodgers.

Then we have the Royal Family. All MP's (and police, military) swear an oath to the King before they can serve; MP's pledge at the start of every new Parliament.

The King is a 'ceremonial', at least in theory. Not supposed to interfere with law making, keeps his mouth shut, and just rubber stamps the legislation. But in practicality, behind the scenes, it's more complicated than that. The Royals continuously interfere with legislation when it suits their own agenda (or assets), and the King has a 'Privy Council' which is comprised of senior politicians (MP's, Lords, civil servants) who 'advise' him in complete confidentiality behind closed doors.

Personally, I think it's bullshit. We have a facade of democracy in this country and the Royals do in fact hold the reigns of power behind the scenes, we've just been conditioned to believe they do not. They aren't even British and haven't been for a long time, it's European dynasties all working together to commandeer the political systems of Europe on behalf of their masters in Rome. That's what we really have, a beast system.

No they are definitely german from the sax gotha coburg family; Windsor my ass. Diana was alot closer to English royalty as a Spencer. (if memory serves)

Okay, that is what I thought; well roughly/mostly......no president. (yea your system sucks but I don't think ours in the US is working a whole lot better.) Representative democracy, IMPO more like rep oligarchy; or maybe all oligarchy is representative. Not perfectly clear on that either but I do remember I did in college and felt we we're more towards the latter.

So what country did this guy call a general election in again?? How is that a thing? I am confused about all of this lol

Ok, so the UK has a president but England has a king; am I on track? So do the other countries in the UK, have presidents that is?...

so does say the Irish president answer to the UK president? damn onion of ignorance.

no. the u.k. has a prime minister.

no. they're two completely different countries.

ireland has both a prime minister and a president.

alasdair

Thank you! That was my understanding. So how can someone call for a general election for president in the UK? Did I misread and it was Prime Minister? Is this someone announcing a general election in 'their' country while in the UK? Ya know I should just read the whole thread.

Thank both of you guys for the 090 gov lesson.
